Armor of God

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil."

— Ephesians 6:10-11 (ESV)

Belt of Truth

Ephesians 6:14a — "Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth"
The Roman soldier's belt held everything together — his tunic, sword, and armor pieces. Truth is foundational to the Christian life. Without truth (God's Word and personal integrity), all other armor pieces fall apart.
How to put it on: Commit to honesty in all areas. Study Scripture to know God's truth. Reject deception and half-truths. Let God's Word be the standard by which you evaluate everything.

Breastplate of Righteousness

Ephesians 6:14b — "and having put on the breastplate of righteousness"
The breastplate protected the heart and vital organs. Christ's righteousness imputed to us (justification) and the Spirit's righteousness produced in us (sanctification) guard our hearts from the enemy's accusations and temptations.
How to put it on: Rest in Christ's righteousness, not your own performance. Pursue holy living. When the accuser attacks, stand on your identity in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

Ephesians 6:15 — "and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace"
Roman soldiers wore caligae — studded sandals providing firm footing on any terrain. The gospel gives us peace with God (our sure footing) and readiness to advance and share that peace with others wherever we go.
How to put it on: Stay grounded in the peace Christ has given you (Romans 5:1). Be ready to share the gospel at any moment. Let peace — not anxiety — be your standing position.

Shield of Faith

Ephesians 6:16 — "In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one"
The Roman scutum was a large, door-sized shield soaked in water to extinguish flaming arrows. Faith in God's character and promises quenches every fiery accusation, doubt, temptation, and fear the enemy launches.
How to put it on: Actively trust God's promises when under attack. Counter doubts with Scripture. Remember past faithfulness. Faith is not absence of fear — it is choosing to trust God despite fear.

Helmet of Salvation

Ephesians 6:17a — "and take the helmet of salvation"
The helmet protected the head — the mind. Knowing you are saved and secure in Christ protects your thought life from despair, confusion, and the enemy's lies about your identity and destiny.
How to put it on: Be assured of your salvation (1 John 5:13). Guard your mind — take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5). Renew your mind daily with God's truth (Romans 12:2).

Sword of the Spirit

Ephesians 6:17b — "and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God"
The only offensive weapon in the armor. The Greek word here is "rhema" — a specific, spoken word. Jesus defeated Satan in the wilderness by quoting specific Scripture (Matthew 4:1-11). The Word is living, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword.
How to put it on: Memorize Scripture so it's ready when temptation comes. Speak God's Word aloud in spiritual battle. Study deeply so the Spirit can bring the right word at the right time.
