The Beatitudes

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

— Matthew 5:3 (ESV)

1. Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit

Matthew 5:3
The Blessing: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

What It Means: Spiritual poverty — recognizing our complete bankruptcy before God. Not material poverty, but a humble acknowledgment that we have nothing to offer God and are utterly dependent on His grace.

The Promise: The kingdom of heaven belongs to those who know they need it most.

2. Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

Matthew 5:4
The Blessing: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

What It Means: Grief over sin — both personal sin and the brokenness of the world. This is godly sorrow that leads to repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10), not mere sadness over consequences.

The Promise: God Himself will comfort them — the ultimate consolation that transcends earthly sorrow.

3. Blessed Are the Meek

Matthew 5:5
The Blessing: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."

What It Means: Meekness is not weakness — it is strength under control. A gentle spirit that submits to God's will and doesn't insist on its own rights. Moses was called the meekest man on earth (Numbers 12:3) yet confronted Pharaoh.

The Promise: The meek, not the aggressive, will ultimately inherit everything — a stunning reversal of worldly values.

4. Blessed Are Those Who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness

Matthew 5:6
The Blessing: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied."

What It Means: An intense, consuming desire for right standing with God and for justice in the world — as desperate as physical starvation and thirst. Not casual interest, but a driving passion for holiness.

The Promise: Those who truly hunger for God's righteousness will be filled — completely satisfied.

5. Blessed Are the Merciful

Matthew 5:7
The Blessing: "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy."

What It Means: Active compassion toward those in misery — not giving people what they deserve, but extending grace as God has extended grace to us. Mercy in action, not just sentiment.

The Promise: Those who show mercy will receive mercy — from God and from others. Our mercy reflects the mercy we've received.

6. Blessed Are the Pure in Heart

Matthew 5:8
The Blessing: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

What It Means: Singleness of devotion — an undivided heart that desires God above all else. Internal integrity where motives, desires, and thoughts align with God's character. Not perfection, but sincerity.

The Promise: They will see God — both in this life (spiritual perception) and in eternity (face to face).

7. Blessed Are the Peacemakers

Matthew 5:9
The Blessing: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."

What It Means: Not merely peace-lovers but peace-makers — those who actively work to reconcile people to God and to each other. This is costly, sacrificial work that mirrors what Christ did on the cross.

The Promise: They are recognized as God's children — because they share the family resemblance of their Father who made peace through the blood of His Son.

8. Blessed Are the Persecuted

Matthew 5:10-12
The Blessing: "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

What It Means: Suffering that comes specifically because of faithfulness to Christ — not from foolishness or sin, but from living righteously in a world hostile to God. Jesus said to "rejoice and be glad" in this.

The Promise: Great reward in heaven, and fellowship with the prophets who were persecuted before them. The kingdom belongs to them.
