What the Bible Says About Depression & Hopelessness
"The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."
— Psalm 34:18 (ESV)Key Scriptures
"Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God."
"But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles."
"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope."
"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."
"We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed."
"The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."
What Scripture Teaches
Depression is not a sign of weak faith. Elijah, David, and Jeremiah all experienced deep despair — and God met them in it.
God does not condemn you for struggling. He draws near to the brokenhearted.
Seeking help (counseling, community, medical care) is not a lack of faith — it is wisdom.
Hold on to what is true even when you cannot feel it. Feelings lie; God's Word does not.
