What the Bible Says About Greed & Materialism
"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith."
— 1 Timothy 6:10 (ESV)Key Scriptures
"No one can serve two masters. You cannot serve God and money."
"Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you."
"Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
"Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf."
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven."
"Charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy."
What Scripture Teaches
Money itself is not evil — the love of it is. Greed is an issue of the heart, not the bank account.
Generosity is the antidote to greed. You cannot be greedy and generous at the same time.
Contentment is learned, not automatic (Philippians 4:11-12). It comes from trusting that God provides what you truly need.
Everything belongs to God — we are stewards, not owners.
