Faithfulness: Godly. A man after God's own heart. Shepherd, warrior, poet, and king. Despite grievous sins (Bathsheba, census), he always returned to God in genuine repentance. Established Jerusalem as capital and received the Messianic covenant.

3. Solomon

Faithfulness: Mixed. Wisest man who ever lived, builder of the Temple, author of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Yet foreign wives turned his heart to idols in his later years, leading directly to the kingdom's division.

4. Rehoboam

Faithfulness: Wicked. Solomon's son whose arrogant refusal to lighten the people's burdens split the kingdom permanently. Chose the counsel of young men over elders. Under his reign, Judah fell into idolatry.

5. Jeroboam

Faithfulness: Wicked. First king of the northern kingdom. Set up golden calves at Bethel and Dan to prevent people from worshiping in Jerusalem. Became the benchmark of wickedness — "the sins of Jeroboam" is repeated throughout Kings.

6. Ahab

Faithfulness: Godly. Sought the Lord, sent teachers throughout Judah to instruct the people in the Law, and established judges. His great weakness was making alliances with wicked northern kings (Ahab, Ahaziah).

8. Hezekiah

Faithfulness: Godly. One of Judah's greatest reformers. Destroyed the high places, reopened the Temple, celebrated Passover. Trusted God during Sennacherib's siege and saw miraculous deliverance. "He held fast to the LORD."

9. Josiah

Faithfulness: Godly. Became king at age 8. At 16, began seeking God. At 26, discovered the Book of the Law and led the most thorough reformation in Judah's history. Tore down altars, renewed the covenant, and restored Passover.

The Divided Kingdom
