1Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

2Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;

4So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

5Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

6Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

7And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

8In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

9Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

10When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

11Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:

12That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1Paul, and Silvanus, and Timothy, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ;

2Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3We are bound to give thanks to God always to you, brethren, even as it is meet, for that your faith growth exceedingly, and the love of each one of you all toward one another aboundeth;

4so that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which ye endure;

5[which is] a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God; to the end that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

6if so be that it is righteous thing with God to recompense affliction to them that afflict you,

7and to you that are afflicted rest with us, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with the angels of his power in flaming fire,

8rendering vengeance to them that know not God, and to them that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus:

9who shall suffer punishment, [even] eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

10when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be marvelled at in all them that believed (because our testimony unto you was believed) in that day.

11To which end we also pray always for you, that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfil every desire of goodness and [every] work of faith, with power;

12that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1From Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

3We ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith flourishes more and more and the love of each one of you all for one another is ever greater.

4As a result we ourselves boast about you in the churches of God for your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and afflictions you are enduring.

5This is evidence of God’s righteous judgment, to make you worthy of the kingdom of God, for which in fact you are suffering.

6For it is right for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you,

7and to you who are being afflicted to give rest together with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels.

8With flaming fire he will mete out punishment on those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

9They will undergo the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength,

10when he comes to be glorified among his saints and admired on that day among all who have believed—and you did in fact believe our testimony.

11And in this regard we pray for you always, that our God will make you worthy of his calling and fulfill by his power your every desire for goodness and every work of faith,

12that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the assembly of the Thessalonians in God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ:

2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3We are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers, even as it is appropriate, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of each and every one of you towards one another abounds;

4so that we ourselves boast about you in the assemblies of God for your perseverance and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which you endure.

5This is an obvious sign of the righteous judgment of God, to the end that you may be counted worthy of God’s Kingdom, for which you also suffer.

6Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay affliction to those who afflict you,

7and to give relief to you who are afflicted with us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire,

8punishing those who don’t know God, and to those who don’t obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus,

9who will pay the penalty: eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

10when he comes in that day to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired among all those who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.

11To this end we also pray always for you, that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire of goodness and work of faith, with power;

12that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Summary

Paul commends the Thessalonians' growing faith amid persecution, assuring them that God will repay affliction to their persecutors and give relief to the afflicted when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire.

Authorship & Background

Author: Paul the Apostle, with Silvanus (Silas) and Timothy (v.1). Written from Corinth, approximately AD 51-52 — shortly after 1 Thessalonians.
Recipient: The same church at Thessalonica. After receiving 1 Thessalonians, the church still had questions and problems. Some were confused about the Day of the Lord (thinking it had already come), and some were using eschatological excitement as an excuse for idleness.
Purpose: To correct a misunderstanding about the Day of the Lord (ch.2), to encourage persecuted believers (ch.1), and to address the problem of idleness (ch.3).
Chapter 1 Overview: Paul thanks God for their growing faith and love under persecution (vv.3-4), then assures them that God's justice will prevail: He will repay their persecutors with tribulation and give them rest when Christ returns in glory (vv.5-10). He prays that God would count them worthy of their calling (vv.11-12).

  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "Everlasting Destruction" on v.9 (MTP Vol. 11, No. 662) "Everlasting destruction FROM the presence of the Lord. Not annihilation — destruction. Not temporary — everlasting. And the nature of it: separation from God's presence and glory. Hell is not the presence of fire so much as the absence of God. To be cut off forever from the source of all good, all beauty, all joy — that is destruction indeed." Sermon: "Glorified in His Saints" on v.10 (MTP Vol. 37, No. 2208) "He shall come to be glorified IN His saints. Not just glorified BY them (their praise) but IN them — their transformed lives will display His glory. Every redeemed soul will be a trophy of grace, a masterpiece of mercy. Christ will be admired as people look at what He has made of sinners."

Reflection

  • 1. "Your faith groweth exceedingly" (v.3). Is your faith growing — especially under pressure? Persecution often produces growth. What trials are currently stretching your faith?
  • 2. "It is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you" (v.6). When you face injustice, can you trust God to settle accounts? Or do you feel the need to take vengeance yourself?
  • 3. "Everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord" (v.9). The reality of eternal judgment is sobering. Does it motivate you to share the gospel with urgency? Who in your life needs to hear?
  • 4. "Glorified in his saints" (v.10). Christ will be glorified IN you — your transformed life will display His glory. Is your life currently displaying Christ's glory? What would need to change?
  • 5. Paul prays they would be "counted worthy of this calling" (v.11). Are you living worthy of your calling? What does "worthy" living look like in your specific circumstances?
