2 Peter — Chapter 1
Loading ESV text...
1Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
2Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
8For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
11For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
12Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
13Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;
14Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
15Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.
16For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
17For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
18And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
19We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
1Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and [the] Saviour Jesus Christ:
2Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;
3seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue;
4whereby he hath granted unto us his precious and exceeding great promises; that through these ye may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in that world by lust.
5Yea, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply virtue; and in [your] virtue knowledge;
6and in [your] knowledge self-control; and in [your] self-control patience; and in [your] patience godliness;
7and in [your] godliness brotherly kindness; and in [your] brotherly kindness love.
8For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful unto the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9For he that lacketh these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins.
10Wherefore, brethren, give the more diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never stumble:
11for thus shall be richly supplied unto you the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
12Wherefore I shall be ready always to put you in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and are established in the truth which is with [you].
13And I think it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;
14knowing that the putting off of my tabernacle cometh swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ signified unto me.
15Yea, I will give diligence that at every time ye may be able after my decease to call these things to remembrance.
16For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
17For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when there was borne such a voice to him by the Majestic Glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased:
18and this voice we [ourselves] heard borne out of heaven, when we were with him in the holy mount.
19And we have the word of prophecy [made] more sure; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts:
20knowing this first, that no prophecy of scripture is of private interpretation.
21For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit.
1From Simeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ, have been granted a faith just as precious as ours.
2May grace and peace be lavished on you as you grow in the rich knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord!
3I can pray this because his divine power has bestowed on us everything necessary for life and godliness through the rich knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence.
4Through these things he has bestowed on us his precious and most magnificent promises, so that by means of what was promised you may become partakers of the divine nature, after escaping the worldly corruption that is produced by evil desire.
5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith excellence, to excellence, knowledge;
6to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness;
7to godliness, brotherly affection; to brotherly affection, unselfish love.
8For if these things are really yours and are continually increasing, they will keep you from becoming ineffective and unproductive in your pursuit of knowing our Lord Jesus Christ more intimately.
9But concerning the one who lacks such things—he is blind. That is to say, he is nearsighted, since he has forgotten about the cleansing of his past sins.
10Therefore, brothers and sisters, make every effort to be sure of your calling and election. For by doing this you will never stumble into sin.
11For thus an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be richly provided for you.
12Therefore, I intend to remind you constantly of these things even though you know them and are well established in the truth that you now have.
13Indeed, as long as I am in this tabernacle, I consider it right to stir you up by way of a reminder,
14since I know that my tabernacle will soon be removed because our Lord Jesus Christ revealed this to me.
15Indeed, I will also make every effort that, after my departure, you have a testimony of these things.
16For we did not follow cleverly concocted fables when we made known to you the power and return of our Lord Jesus Christ; no, we were eyewitnesses of his grandeur.
17For he received honor and glory from God the Father, when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory: “This is my dear Son, in whom I am delighted.”
18When this voice was conveyed from heaven, we ourselves heard it, for we were with him on the holy mountain.
19Moreover, we possess the prophetic word as an altogether reliable thing. You do well if you pay attention to this as you would to a light shining in a murky place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
20Above all, you do well if you recognize this: No prophecy of scripture ever comes about by the prophet’s own imagination,
21for no prophecy was ever borne of human impulse; rather, men carried along by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
1Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:
2Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,
3seeing that his divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and virtue;
4by which he has granted to us his precious and exceedingly great promises; that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust.
5Yes, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge;
6and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control perseverance; and in perseverance godliness;
7and in godliness brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love.
8For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins.
10Therefore, brothers, be more diligent to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never stumble.
11For thus you will be richly supplied with the entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
12Therefore I will not be negligent to remind you of these things, though you know them, and are established in the present truth.
13I think it right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you;
14knowing that the putting off of my tent comes swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.
15Yes, I will make every effort that you may always be able to remember these things even after my departure.
16For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
17For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
18We heard this voice come out of heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain.
19We have the more sure word of prophecy; and you do well that you heed it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns, and the morning star arises in your hearts:
20knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of private interpretation.
21For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke, being moved by the Holy Spirit.
Summary
Peter reminds believers of their precious promises and calls them to supplement faith with virtue, knowledge, self-control, and love — confirming their calling and election, and affirming that Scripture came not by human will but as men spoke from God, carried by the Holy Spirit.

- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "All Things Given" on v.3 (MTP Vol. 25, No. 1489) "ALL things that pertain unto life and godliness — GIVEN. Not promised for the future — given now. Not some things — all things. Everything you need for living and for godliness is already yours in Christ. You are not lacking resources — you are lacking awareness of what you already have." Sermon: "Moved by the Holy Ghost" on v.21 (MTP Vol. 30, No. 1793) "Holy men spake as they were MOVED — Greek 'pheromenoi' — carried along, borne along. Like a ship carried by the wind. The writers were not passive — they wrote with their own personalities and styles. But they were carried along by the Spirit so that what they wrote was God's word. Human authors, divine authority."

Reflection
- 1. "His divine power hath given unto us ALL things" (v.3). You already have everything you need for life and godliness. Are you accessing what's already given, or looking for something more?
- 2. Review the growth ladder (vv.5-7). Where are you on it? Which quality needs the most development? Are you actively "adding" or passively stagnating?
- 3. "Give diligence to make your calling and election sure" (v.10). Is your life producing evidence of genuine faith? Can you see growth? If not, what needs to change?
- 4. "Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" (v.21). Do you treat Scripture as God's word — carried along by His Spirit? Or as merely human opinion? Your view of Scripture determines everything.
- 5. Peter knew death was near (v.14) and focused on leaving truth behind (v.15). What legacy are you building? What truth are you passing on?
