1The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.

2Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen: thou art greatly despised.

3The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

4Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.

5If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?

6How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up!

7All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.

8Shall I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?

9And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

10For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

11In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

12But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

13Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;

14Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.

15For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.

16For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.

17But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.

18And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.

19And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.

20And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.

21And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD’S.

1The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord Jehovah concerning Edom: We have heard tidings from Jehovah, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, [saying], Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.

2Behold, I have made thee small among the nations: thou art greatly despised.

3The pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

4Though thou mount on high as the eagle, and though thy nest be set among the stars, I will bring thee down from thence, saith Jehovah.

5If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night (how art thou cut off!), would they not steal [only] till they had enough? if grape-gatherers came to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes?

6How are [the things of] Esau searched! how are his hidden treasures sought out!

7All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee on thy way, even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; [they that eat] thy bread lay a snare under thee: there is no understanding in him.

8Shall I not in that day, saith Jehovah, destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?

9And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one may be cut off from the mount of Esau by slaughter.

10For the violence done to thy brother Jacob, shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

11In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away his substance, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

12But look not thou on the day of thy brother in the day of his disaster, and rejoice not over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither speak proudly in the day of distress.

13Enter not into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, look not thou on their affliction in the day of their calamity, neither lay ye [hands] on their substance in the day of their calamity.

14And stand thou not in the crossway, to cut off those of his that escape; and deliver not up those of his that remain in the day of distress.

15For the day of Jehovah is near upon all the nations: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee; thy dealing shall return upon thine own head.

16For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the nations drink continually; yea, they shall drink, and swallow down, and shall be as though they had not been.

17But in mount Zion there shall be those that escape, and it shall be holy; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.

18And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall burn among them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining to the house of Esau; for Jehovah hath spoken it.

19And they of the South shall possess the mount of Esau, and they of the lowland the Philistines; and they shall possess the field of Ephraim, and the field of Samaria; and Benjamin [shall possess] Gilead.

20And the captives of this host of the children of Israel, that are [among] the Canaanites, [shall possess] even unto Zarephath; and the captives of Jerusalem, that are in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the South.

21And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be Jehovah`s.

1The vision that Obadiah saw. The Sovereign Lord says this concerning Edom: We have heard a report from the Lord. An envoy was sent among the nations, saying, “Arise! Let us make war against Edom!”

2The Lord says, “Look! I will make you a weak nation; you will be greatly despised!

3Your presumptuous heart has deceived you— you who reside in the safety of the rocky cliffs, whose home is high in the mountains. You think to yourself, ‘No one can bring me down to the ground!’

4Even if you were to soar high like an eagle, even if you were to make your nest among the stars, I can bring you down even from there!” says the Lord.

5“If thieves came to rob you during the night, they would steal only as much as they wanted. If grape pickers came to harvest your vineyards, they would leave some behind for the poor. But you will be totally destroyed!

6How the people of Esau will be thoroughly plundered! Their hidden valuables will be ransacked!

7All your allies will force you from your homeland! Your treaty partners will deceive you and overpower you. Your trusted friends will set an ambush for you that will take you by surprise!

8“At that time,” the Lord says, “I will destroy the wise sages of Edom, the advisers from Esau’s mountain.

9Your warriors will be shattered, O Teman, so that everyone will be destroyed from Esau’s mountain!

10“Because you violently slaughtered your relatives, the people of Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be destroyed forever.

11You stood aloof while strangers took his army captive and foreigners advanced to his gates. When they cast lots over Jerusalem, you behaved as though you were in league with them.

12You should not have gloated when your relatives suffered calamity. You should not have rejoiced over the people of Judah when they were destroyed. You should not have boasted when they suffered adversity.

13You should not have entered the city of my people when they experienced distress. You should not have joined in gloating over their misfortune when they suffered distress. You should not have looted their wealth when they endured distress.

14You should not have stood at the fork in the road to slaughter those trying to escape. You should not have captured their refugees when they suffered adversity.

15“For the day of the Lord is approaching for all the nations! Just as you have done, so it will be done to you. You will get exactly what your deeds deserve.

16For just as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink, and they will gulp down; they will be as though they had never been.

17But on Mount Zion there will be a remnant of those who escape, and it will be a holy place once again. The descendants of Jacob will conquer those who had conquered them.

18The descendants of Jacob will be a fire and the descendants of Joseph a flame. The descendants of Esau will be like stubble. They will burn them up and devour them. There will not be a single survivor of the descendants of Esau!” Indeed, the Lord has spoken it.

19The people of the Negev will take possession of Esau’s mountain, and the people of the foothills will take possession of the land of the Philistines. They will also take possession of the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, and the people of Benjamin will take possession of Gilead.

20The exiles of this fortress of the people of Israel will take possession of what belongs to the people of Canaan, as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will take possession of the towns of the Negev.

21Those who have been delivered will go up on Mount Zion in order to rule over Esau’s mountain. Then the Lord will reign as King!

1The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord Yahweh says about Edom. We have heard news from Yahweh, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, “Arise, and let’s rise up against her in battle.

2Behold, I have made you small among the nations. You are greatly despised.

3The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high, who says in his heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’

4Though you mount on high as the eagle, and though your nest is set among the stars, I will bring you down from there,” says Yahweh.

5“If thieves came to you, if robbers by night—oh, what disaster awaits you—wouldn’t they only steal until they had enough? If grape pickers came to you, wouldn’t they leave some gleaning grapes?

6How Esau will be ransacked! How his hidden treasures are sought out!

7All the men of your alliance have brought you on your way, even to the border. The men who were at peace with you have deceived you, and prevailed against you. Friends who eat your bread lay a snare under you. There is no understanding in him.”

8“Won’t I in that day”, says Yahweh, “destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mountain of Esau?

9Your mighty men, Teman, will be dismayed, to the end that everyone may be cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter.

10For the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever.

11In the day that you stood on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away his substance, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots for Jerusalem, even you were like one of them.

12But don’t look down on your brother in the day of his disaster, and don’t rejoice over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction. Don’t speak proudly in the day of distress.

13Don’t enter into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity. Don’t look down on their affliction in the day of their calamity, neither seize their wealth on the day of their calamity.

14Don’t stand in the crossroads to cut off those of his who escape. Don’t deliver up those of his who remain in the day of distress.

15For the day of Yahweh is near all the nations! As you have done, it will be done to you. Your deeds will return upon your own head.

16For as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so will all the nations drink continually. Yes, they will drink, swallow down, and will be as though they had not been.

17But in Mount Zion, there will be those who escape, and it will be holy. The house of Jacob will possess their possessions.

18The house of Jacob will be a fire, the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble. They will burn among them, and devour them. There will not be any remaining to the house of Esau.” Indeed, Yahweh has spoken.

19Those of the South will possess the mountain of Esau, and those of the lowland, the Philistines. They will possess the field of Ephraim, and the field of Samaria. Benjamin will possess Gilead.

20The captives of this army of the children of Israel, who are among the Canaanites, will possess even to Zarephath; and the captives of Jerusalem, who are in Sepharad, will possess the cities of the Negev.

21Saviors will go up on Mount Zion to judge the mountains of Esau, and the kingdom will be Yahweh’s.

Summary

The shortest book in the Old Testament pronounces God's judgment on Edom for violence against brother Jacob — their pride will be brought low, and "the kingdom shall be the LORD's."

Authorship & Background

Author: Obadiah (meaning "servant of the LORD"). The shortest OT book (21 verses). Date debated. Key theme: judgment on Edom for pride and violence against brother Jacob/Israel. "The day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen" (v.15).
Classification: Prophetic Oracle — Judgment on Edom Key Themes: Pride before a fall, betrayal of brotherhood, gloating over a brother's misfortune, the Day of the LORD, Zion's deliverance, the kingdom belonging to the LORD
Historical Context: Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament — 21 verses devoted to ONE subject: God's judgment on Edom. Edom descended from Esau (Jacob's twin brother), and the hostility between Edom and Israel runs throughout Scripture. Edom's specific crime: when Jerusalem fell (likely 586 BC to Babylon), Edom didn't just stand aside — they GLOATED, LOOTED, and cut off FUGITIVES (vv.12-14). They rejoiced in their brother's suffering, blocked escape routes, and handed survivors over to enemies. God saw every act. Edom felt invincible in their mountain fortress (Petra); God says: "Thence will I bring thee down" (v.4). The book ends with the ultimate declaration: "the kingdom shall be the LORD's" (v.21).
Structure:
  • God's Verdict: Edom Will Be Brought Low (vv.1-4)
  • The Thoroughness of Edom's Destruction (vv.5-9)
  • The Crime: Violence Against Brother Jacob (vv.10-14)
  • The Day of the LORD: Universal Judgment (v.15)
  • Zion's Restoration and Edom's End (vv.16-21)

Map & Geography

  • Edom (v.1, v.8): Land south of the Dead Sea; descendants of Esau.
  • Jerusalem (v.11, v.20): Capital of Judah; the holy city where the Temple stood.
  • Zion (v.17, v.21): The hill on which Jerusalem/the Temple stood; often used poetically for God's dwelling.
  • Samaria (v.19): Central region between Judea and Galilee; mixed Jewish-Gentile population.
  • Gilead (v.19): Mountainous region east of the Jordan River.

Reflection

  • 1. "Who shall bring me down?" (v.3). Whenever you feel untouchable — secure in position, wealth, health, or relationships — check yourself. Pride says "no one can reach me." God says "I will bring you down." Security apart from God is illusion.
  • 2. "Thou shouldest not have" (vv.12-14). Gloating over someone's downfall is JUDGED. Rejoicing in an enemy's pain, profiting from their loss, blocking their escape — these are not neutral actions. God sees your response to other people's suffering. Compassion or cruelty — which will He find?
  • 3. "As thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee" (v.15). The golden rule has a dark side: what you sow toward others returns upon your OWN head. Be careful how you treat people in their weakness — you may find yourself there.
  • 4. "The kingdom shall be the LORD's" (v.21). All empires fall. All pride collapses. All human kingdoms end. Only ONE kingdom endures: God's. Align yourself with the eternal kingdom, not temporal ones.
