1The word of the LORD which came unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

2I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.

3I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.

4I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests;

5And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham;

6And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him.

7Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests.

8And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD’S sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel.

9In the same day also will I punish all those that leap on the threshold, which fill their masters’ houses with violence and deceit.

10And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that there shall be the noise of a cry from the fish gate, and an howling from the second, and a great crashing from the hills.

11Howl, ye inhabitants of Maktesh, for all the merchant people are cut down; all they that bear silver are cut off.

12And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.

13Therefore their goods shall become a booty, and their houses a desolation: they shall also build houses, but not inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine thereof.

14The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.

15That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

16A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.

17And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.

18Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

1The word of Jehovah which came unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

2I will utterly consume all things from off the face of the ground, saith Jehovah.

3I will consume man and beast; I will consume the birds of the heavens, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the face of the ground, saith Jehovah.

4And I will stretch out my hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, [and] the name of the Chemarim with the priests;

5and them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship, that swear to Jehovah and swear by Malcam;

6and them that are turned back from following Jehovah; and those that have not sought Jehovah, nor inquired after him.

7Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord Jehovah; for the day of Jehovah is at hand: for Jehovah hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath consecrated his guests.

8And it shall come to pass in the day of Jehovah`s sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king`s sons, and all such as are clothed with foreign apparel.

9And in that day I will punish all those that leap over the threshold, that fill their master`s house with violence and deceit.

10And in that day, saith Jehovah, there shall be the noise of a cry from the fish gate, and a wailing from the second quarter, and a great crashing from the hills.

11Wail, ye inhabitants of Maktesh; for all the people of Canaan are undone; all they that were laden with silver are cut off.

12And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with lamps; and I will punish the men that are settled on their lees, that say in their heart, Jehovah will not do good, neither will he do evil.

13And their wealth shall become a spoil, and their houses a desolation: yea, they shall build houses, but shall not inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, but shall not drink the wine thereof.

14The great day of Jehovah is near, it is near and hasteth greatly, [even] the voice of the day of Jehovah; the mighty man crieth there bitterly.

15That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

16a day of the trumpet and alarm, against the fortified cities, and against the high battlements.

17And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against Jehovah; and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as dung.

18Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of Jehovah`s wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he will make an end, yea, a terrible end, of all them that dwell in the land.

1This is the Lord’s message that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah during the time of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah:

2“I will destroy everything from the face of the earth,” says the Lord.

3“I will destroy people and animals; I will destroy the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea. (The idolatrous images of these creatures will be destroyed along with evil people.) I will remove humanity from the face of the earth,” says the Lord.

4“I will attack Judah and all who live in Jerusalem. I will remove from this place every trace of Baal worship, as well as the very memory of the pagan priests.

5I will remove those who worship the stars in the sky from their rooftops, those who swear allegiance to the Lord while taking oaths in the name of their ‘king,’

6and those who turn their backs on the Lord and do not want the Lord’s help or guidance.”

7Be silent before the Sovereign Lord, for the Lord’s day of judgment is almost here. The Lord has prepared a sacrificial meal; he has ritually purified his guests.

8“On the day of the Lord’s sacrificial meal, I will punish the princes and the king’s sons, and all who wear foreign styles of clothing.

9On that day I will punish all who leap over the threshold, who fill the house of their master with wealth taken by violence and deceit.

10On that day,” says the Lord, “a loud cry will go up from the Fish Gate, wailing from the city’s newer district, and a loud crash from the hills.

11Wail, you who live in the market district, for all the merchants will disappear and those who count money will be removed.

12At that time I will search through Jerusalem with lamps. I will punish the people who are entrenched in their sin, those who think to themselves, ‘The Lord neither rewards nor punishes.’

13Their wealth will be stolen and their houses ruined! They will not live in the houses they have built, nor will they drink the wine from the vineyards they have planted.

14The Lord’s great day of judgment is almost here; it is approaching very rapidly! There will be a bitter sound on the Lord’s day of judgment; at that time warriors will cry out in battle.

15That day will be a day of God’s anger, a day of distress and hardship, a day of devastation and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and dark skies,

16a day of trumpet blasts and battle cries. Judgment will fall on the fortified cities and the high corner towers.

17I will bring distress on the people and they will stumble like blind men, for they have sinned against the Lord. Their blood will be poured out like dirt; their flesh will be scattered like manure.

18Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord’s angry judgment. The whole earth will be consumed by his fiery wrath. Indeed, he will bring terrifying destruction on all who live on the earth.”

1Yahweh’s word which came to Zephaniah, the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah, the son of Amon, king of Judah.

2I will utterly sweep away everything from the surface of the earth, says Yahweh.

3I will sweep away man and animal. I will sweep away the birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and the heaps of rubble with the wicked. I will cut off man from the surface of the earth, says Yahweh.

4I will stretch out my hand against Judah, and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place: the name of the idolatrous and pagan priests,

5those who worship the army of the sky on the housetops, those who worship and swear by Yahweh and also swear by Malcam,

6those who have turned back from following Yahweh, and those who haven’t sought Yahweh nor inquired after him.

7Be silent at the presence of the Lord Yahweh, for the day of Yahweh is at hand. For Yahweh has prepared a sacrifice. He has consecrated his guests.

8It will happen in the day of Yahweh’s sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, the king’s sons, and all those who are clothed with foreign clothing.

9In that day, I will punish all those who leap over the threshold, who fill their master’s house with violence and deceit.

10In that day, says Yahweh, there will be the noise of a cry from the fish gate, a wailing from the second quarter, and a great crashing from the hills.

11Wail, you inhabitants of Maktesh, for all the people of Canaan are undone! All those who were loaded with silver are cut off.

12It will happen at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are settled on their dregs, who say in their heart, “Yahweh will not do good, neither will he do evil.”

13Their wealth will become a plunder, and their houses a desolation. Yes, they will build houses, but won’t inhabit them. They will plant vineyards, but won’t drink their wine.

14The great day of Yahweh is near. It is near, and hurries greatly, the voice of the day of Yahweh. The mighty man cries there bitterly.

15That day is a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness,

16a day of the trumpet and alarm, against the fortified cities, and against the high battlements.

17I will bring distress on men, that they will walk like blind men, because they have sinned against Yahweh, and their blood will be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung.

18Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of Yahweh’s wrath, but the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he will make an end, yes, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land.

Summary

The great Day of the LORD is near — God will sweep away everything from the land, searching Jerusalem with lamps for the complacent who say "The LORD will not do good, nor will He do ill."

Authorship & Background

Author: Zephaniah, great-great-grandson of King Hezekiah. Prophesied approximately 640-625 BC during Josiah's early reign. Key theme: the Day of the LORD as universal judgment ('I will utterly consume all things') followed by restoration. 'The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy' (3:17).
Classification: Prophetic Oracle — The Day of the LORD as Universal Judgment Key Themes: Comprehensive cosmic judgment, the Day of the LORD, judgment beginning at God's house, spiritual complacency exposed, the insufficiency of wealth in judgment, God's searching investigation
Historical Context: Zephaniah prophesied during the early reign of King Josiah (640-609 BC), likely before Josiah's great reforms of 621 BC (the discovery of the Book of the Law, 2 Kings 22-23). Judah was in severe spiritual decline following the reigns of Manasseh (the most wicked king) and Amon. Baal worship, astral worship, and syncretism had infiltrated every level of society — including the priesthood.
Zephaniah's royal lineage (great-great-grandson of Hezekiah) gave him unique access and authority. He could speak against "the king's children" (v.8) and the religious establishment because he was one of them. His prophecy may have been one of the catalysts for Josiah's reforms.
Chapter 1 is one of the most terrifying descriptions of divine judgment in all Scripture. The language echoes Genesis — God will "consume" man, beast, birds, and fish (reversing creation). The "Day of the LORD" is described with seven characteristics (v.15) and is declared "near" and "hastening fast" (v.14). This chapter inspired the medieval hymn "Dies Irae" (Day of Wrath), one of the most famous hymns in church history.
Structure:
  • Superscription and Genealogy (v.1)
  • Universal Judgment: Reversal of Creation (vv.2-3)
  • Judgment on Judah's Idolatry (vv.4-6)
  • The Day of the LORD as Sacrifice (vv.7-9)
  • Judgment on Jerusalem's Districts (vv.10-11)
  • God Searches Jerusalem with Candles (vv.12-13)
  • The Great Day: Near and Terrible (vv.14-18)

Map & Geography

  • Jerusalem (v.4, v.12): Capital of Judah; the holy city where the Temple stood.

Reflection

  • 1. God "searches with candles" (v.12). There is no hiding from divine investigation. Every corner, every compartment, every secret is exposed under God's lamp. The question is not whether God will find what's there — but whether you will bring it into the light voluntarily through repentance before He searches it out in judgment.
  • 2. Complacency is more dangerous than rebellion (v.12). The "settled on their lees" people are not flagrant sinners — they are INDIFFERENT. They assume God is irrelevant: "He won't bless and won't judge." This practical atheism — living as though God does nothing — is the most perilous spiritual condition because it feels so comfortable.
  • 3. Wealth provides zero security on judgment day (v.18). Silver and gold cannot deliver when God acts. Every insurance policy, savings account, and exit strategy fails before divine justice. Invest in what endures: faith, obedience, love of God.
  • 4. Judgment begins at the house of God (vv.4-6). God doesn't start with the pagans — He starts with His own people, His own city, His own priests. "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God" (1 Peter 4:17). Greater privilege means greater accountability.
  • 5. The Day of the LORD is "near and hastening fast" (v.14). This urgency should shape your priorities. Live with awareness of accountability. The Day is not merely a future theological concept — it should produce present repentance and watchfulness.
