1Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

2Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

4Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,

5For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;

6Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

7Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.

8For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.

9And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

10That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;

11Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

12But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;

13So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;

14And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

15Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:

16The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:

17But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.

18What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

19For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

20According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.

21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

22But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.

23For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

24Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.

25And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;

26That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.

27Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

28And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God.

29For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

30Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

1Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus that are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3I thank my God upon all my remembrance of you,

4always in every supplication of mine on behalf of you all making my supplication with joy,

5for your fellowship in furtherance of the gospel from the first day until now;

6being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ:

7even as it is right for me to be thus minded on behalf of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as, both in my bonds and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers with me of grace.

8For God is my witness, how I long after you all in the tender mercies of Christ Jesus.

9And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment;

10so that ye may approve the things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and void of offence unto the day of Christ;

11being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

12Now I would have you know, brethren, that the things [which happened] unto me have fallen out rather unto the progress of the gospel;

13so that my bonds became manifest in Christ throughout the whole praetorian guard, and to all the rest;

14and that most of the brethren in the Lord, being confident through my bonds, are more abundantly bold to speak the word of God without fear.

15Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:

16the one [do it] of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel;

17but the other proclaim Christ of faction, not sincerely, thinking to raise up affliction for me in my bonds.

18What then? only that in every way, whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and therein I rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

19For I know that this shall turn out to my salvation, through your supplication and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

20according to my earnest expectation and hope, that in nothing shall I be put to shame, but [that] with all boldness, as always, [so] now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by death.

21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

22But if to live in the flesh, --[if] this shall bring fruit from my work, then what I shall choose I know not.

23But I am in a strait betwixt the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ; for it is very far better:

24yet to abide in the flesh is more needful for your sake.

25And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide, yea, and abide with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith;

26that your glorying may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my presence with you again.

27Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ: that, whether I come and see you and be absent, I may hear of your state, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one soul striving for the faith of the gospel;

28and in nothing affrighted by the adversaries: which is for them an evident token of perdition, but of your salvation, and that from God;

29because to you it hath been granted in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer in his behalf:

30having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

1From Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the overseers and deacons.

2Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

3I thank my God every time I remember you.

4I always pray with joy in my every prayer for all of you

5because of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now.

6For I am sure of this very thing, that the one who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

7For it is right for me to think this about all of you, because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel all of you became partners in God’s grace together with me.

8For God is my witness that I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

9And I pray this, that your love may abound even more and more in knowledge and every kind of insight

10so that you can decide what is best, and thus be sincere and blameless for the day of Christ,

11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God.

12I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that my situation has actually turned out to advance the gospel:

13The whole imperial guard and everyone else knows that I am in prison for the sake of Christ,

14and most of the brothers and sisters, having confidence in the Lord because of my imprisonment, now more than ever dare to speak the word fearlessly.

15Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill.

16The latter do so from love because they know that I am placed here for the defense of the gospel.

17The former proclaim Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, because they think they can cause trouble for me in my imprisonment.

18What is the result? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is being proclaimed, and in this I rejoice.Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,

19for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.

20My confident hope is that I will in no way be ashamed but that with complete boldness, even now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, whether I live or die.

21For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain.

22Now if I am to go on living in the body, this will mean productive work for me, yet I don’t know which I prefer:

23I feel torn between the two because I have a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far,

24but it is more vital for your sake that I remain in the body.

25And since I am sure of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for the sake of your progress and joy in the faith,

26so that what you can be proud of may increase because of me in Christ Jesus, when I come back to you.

27Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ so that—whether I come and see you or whether I remain absent—I should hear that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, by contending side by side for the faith of the gospel,

28and by not being intimidated in any way by your opponents. This is a sign of their destruction, but of your salvation—a sign which is from God.

29For it has been granted to you not only to believe in Christ but also to suffer for him,

30since you are encountering the same conflict that you saw me face and now hear that I am facing.

1Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ; To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and servants:

2Grace to you, and peace from God, our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3I thank my God whenever I remember you,

4always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy,

5for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now;

6being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

7It is even right for me to think this way on behalf of all of you, because I have you in my heart, because, both in my bonds and in the defense and confirmation of the Good News, you all are partakers with me of grace.

8For God is my witness, how I long after all of you in the tender mercies of Christ Jesus.

9This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment;

10so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and without offense to the day of Christ;

11being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

12Now I desire to have you know, brothers, that the things which happened to me have turned out rather to the progress of the Good News;

13so that it became evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my bonds are in Christ;

14and that most of the brothers in the Lord, being confident through my bonds, are more abundantly bold to speak the word of God without fear.

15Some indeed preach Christ even out of envy and strife, and some also out of good will.

16The former insincerely preach Christ from selfish ambition, thinking that they add affliction to my chains;

17but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the Good News.

18What does it matter? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed. I rejoice in this, yes, and will rejoice.

19For I know that this will turn out to my salvation, through your prayers and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

20according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will in no way be disappointed, but with all boldness, as always, now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by death.

21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

22But if I live on in the flesh, this will bring fruit from my work; yet I don’t know what I will choose.

23But I am in a dilemma between the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

24Yet, to remain in the flesh is more needful for your sake.

25Having this confidence, I know that I will remain, yes, and remain with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith,

26that your rejoicing may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my presence with you again.

27Only let your way of life be worthy of the Good News of Christ, that, whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your state, that you stand firm in one spirit, with one soul striving for the faith of the Good News;

28and in nothing frightened by the adversaries, which is for them a proof of destruction, but to you of salvation, and that from God.

29Because it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer on his behalf,

30having the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear is in me.

Summary

Paul writes from prison with joy, expressing confidence that God will complete His good work in the Philippians, declaring "to live is Christ and to die is gain," and urging them to stand firm in one spirit for the faith of the gospel.

Authorship & Background

Author: Paul the Apostle, with Timothy (v.1). Written from prison in Rome, approximately AD 61-62. Philippians is one of Paul's four "Prison Epistles" (with Ephesians, Colossians, and Philemon).
Recipient: The church at Philippi — the first church Paul planted in Europe (Acts 16:11-40). Founded during Paul's second missionary journey when Lydia, the jailer, and others believed. Philippi was a Roman colony in Macedonia (northern Greece). The church had a special relationship with Paul — they were his most generous supporters (4:15-16).
Purpose: A thank-you letter for their financial gift (4:18), an update on Paul's situation in prison, and encouragement to rejoice despite circumstances. Philippians is the "epistle of joy" — the word "joy/rejoice" appears 16 times in 4 chapters, all written from a prison cell.
Theme: Joy in Christ regardless of circumstances. Paul demonstrates that joy is not dependent on situation but on perspective — and his perspective is Christ (v.21).

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik covers Paul's thanksgiving, his prayer, the furtherance of the gospel through imprisonment, and the "to live is Christ" declaration.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "To Live is Christ" on v.21 (MTP Vol. 10, No. 580) "To me to live is Christ. Fill in the blank for yourself. To me to live is — what? Money? Pleasure? Reputation? Family? If you can say 'to me to live is Christ,' then you can also say 'to die is gain.' But if to live is money, then to die is to leave it all behind. If to live is fame, then to die is to be forgotten. Only Christ makes death gain." Sermon: "He Which Hath Begun a Good Work" on v.6 (MTP Vol. 11, No. 621) "He which hath BEGUN — it was God who started it. He will PERFORM it — it is God who will finish it. Your salvation does not depend on your grip on God but on His grip on you. He began the work without your permission and He will complete it without your failure being able to stop Him."

Reflection

  • 1. "He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it" (v.6). God started your transformation and He will finish it. Where do you feel incomplete? Can you trust that God is still working?
  • 2. "The things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel" (v.12). What difficult circumstances in your life might God be using to advance His purposes? Can you see past the pain to the purpose?
  • 3. "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (v.21). Honestly fill in the blank: "For me to live is ___." Is it Christ? Or something else? What would need to change for Christ to truly be your life?
  • 4. "Not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake" (v.29). Suffering is presented as a gift alongside faith. How do you view suffering — as punishment, random misfortune, or a gift? How does this verse challenge your perspective?
  • 5. Paul rejoiced even when people preached Christ from wrong motives (v.18). Can you rejoice when God works through imperfect people and imperfect circumstances? Or does imperfection steal your joy?
