1The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.

2Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?

3Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.

4That which the palmerworm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpiller eaten.

5Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

6For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion.

7He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.

8Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

9The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD’S ministers, mourn.

10The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth.

11Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished.

12The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.

13Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.

14Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD,

15Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

16Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yea, joy and gladness from the house of our God?

17The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered.

18How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.

19O LORD, to thee will I cry: for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.

20The beasts of the field cry also unto thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

1The word of Jehovah that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.

2Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or in the days of your fathers?

3Tell ye your children of it, and [let] your children [tell] their children, and their children another generation.

4That which the palmer-worm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the canker-worm eaten; and that which the canker-worm hath left hath the caterpillar eaten.

5Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and wail, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

6For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number; his teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the jaw-teeth of a lioness.

7He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig-tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.

8Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

9The meal-offering and the drink-offering are cut off from the house of Jehovah; the priests, Jehovah`s ministers, mourn.

10The field is laid waste, the land mourneth; for the grain is destroyed, the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth.

11Be confounded, O ye husbandmen, wail, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; for the harvest of the field is perished.

12The vine is withered, and the fig-tree languisheth; the pomegranate-tree, the palm-tree also, and the apple-tree, even all the trees of the field are withered: for joy is withered away from the sons of men.

13Gird yourselves [with sackcloth], and lament, ye priests; wail, ye ministers of the altar; come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meal-offering and the drink-offering are withholden from the house of your God.

14Sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the old men [and] all the inhabitants of the land unto the house of Jehovah your God, and cry unto Jehovah.

15Alas for the day! for the day of Jehovah is at hand, and as destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

16Is not the food cut off before our eyes, [yea], joy and gladness from the house of our God?

17The seeds rot under their clods; the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the grain is withered.

18How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.

19O Jehovah, to thee do I cry; for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.

20Yea, the beasts of the field pant unto thee; for the water brooks are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

1This is the Lord’s message that came to Joel the son of Pethuel:

2Listen to this, you elders; pay attention, all inhabitants of the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your whole life or in the lifetime of your ancestors?

3Tell your children about it; have your children tell their children, and their children the following generation.

4What the gazam-locust left the ‘arbeh-locust consumed; what the ‘arbeh-locust left the yeleq-locust consumed; and what the yeleq-locust left the hasil-locust consumed.

5Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you wine drinkers, because the sweet wine has been taken away from you.

6For a nation has invaded my land, mighty and without number. Their teeth are lion’s teeth; they have the fangs of a lioness.

7They have destroyed my vines; they have turned my fig trees into mere splinters. They have completely stripped off the bark and thrown it aside; the twigs are stripped bare.

8Wail like a young virgin clothed in sackcloth, lamenting the death of her husband to be.

9No one brings grain offerings or drink offerings to the temple of the Lord anymore. So the priests, those who serve the Lord, are in mourning.

10The crops of the fields have been destroyed. The ground is in mourning because the grain has perished. The fresh wine has dried up; the olive oil languishes.

11Be distressed, farmers; wail, vinedressers, over the wheat and the barley. For the harvest of the field has perished.

12The vine has dried up; the fig tree languishes— the pomegranate, date, and apple as well. In fact, all the trees of the field have dried up. Indeed, the joy of the people has dried up!

13Get dressed and lament, you priests. Wail, you who minister at the altar. Come, spend the night in sackcloth, you servants of my God, because no one brings grain offerings or drink offerings to the temple of your God anymore.

14Announce a holy fast; proclaim a sacred assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the temple of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord.

15How awful that day will be! For the day of the Lord is near; it will come as destruction from the Divine Destroyer.

16Our food has been cut off right before our eyes! There is no longer any joy or gladness in the temple of our God.

17The grains of seed have shriveled beneath their shovels. Storehouses have been decimated, and granaries have been torn down because the grain has dried up.

18Listen to the cattle groan! The herds of livestock wander around in confusion because they have no pasture. Even the flocks of sheep are suffering.

19To you, O Lord, I call out for help, for fire has burned up the pastures of the wilderness, flames have razed all the trees in the fields.

20Even the wild animals cry out to you, for the river beds have dried up; fire has destroyed the pastures of the wilderness.

1Yahweh’s word that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel.

2Hear this, you elders, And listen, all you inhabitants of the land. Has this ever happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers?

3Tell your children about it, and have your children tell their children, and their children, another generation.

4What the swarming locust has left, the great locust has eaten. What the great locust has left, the grasshopper has eaten. What the grasshopper has left, the caterpillar has eaten.

5Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

6For a nation has come up on my land, strong, and without number. His teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he has the fangs of a lioness.

7He has laid my vine waste, and stripped my fig tree. He has stripped its bark, and thrown it away. Its branches are made white.

8Mourn like a virgin dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth!

9The meal offering and the drink offering are cut off from Yahweh’s house. The priests, Yahweh’s ministers, mourn.

10The field is laid waste. The land mourns, for the grain is destroyed, The new wine has dried up, and the oil languishes.

11Be confounded, you farmers! Wail, you vineyard keepers; for the wheat and for the barley; for the harvest of the field has perished.

12The vine has dried up, and the fig tree withered; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all of the trees of the field are withered; for joy has withered away from the sons of men.

13Put on sackcloth and mourn, you priests! Wail, you ministers of the altar. Come, lie all night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God, for the meal offering and the drink offering are withheld from your God’s house.

14Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders, and all the inhabitants of the land, to the house of Yahweh, your God, and cry to Yahweh.

15Alas for the day! For the day of Yahweh is at hand, and it will come as destruction from the Almighty.

16Isn’t the food cut off before our eyes; joy and gladness from the house of our God?

17The seeds rot under their clods. The granaries are laid desolate. The barns are broken down, for the grain has withered.

18How the animals groan! The herds of livestock are perplexed, because they have no pasture. Yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.

19Yahweh, I cry to you, For the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame has burned all the trees of the field.

20Yes, the animals of the field pant to you, for the water brooks have dried up, And the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

Summary

A devastating locust plague is interpreted as a harbinger of the Day of the LORD — Joel calls for national lamentation, fasting, and repentance as the land lies utterly desolate.

Authorship & Background

Author: Joel son of Pethuel. Date debated (either 835 or 400 BC). Key theme: the Day of the LORD — judgment (locust plague as precursor) and restoration. Famous for: "I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh" (2:28) — fulfilled at Pentecost (Acts 2:16-21).
Classification: Prophetic Oracle — The Locust Plague as Harbinger of the Day of the LORD Key Themes: Unprecedented devastation, the call to mourn and fast, creation groaning, the Day of the LORD approaching, total economic and agricultural collapse
Historical Context: Chapter 1 opens with a devastating locust plague — so severe that nothing like it has occurred in living memory. Joel uses FOUR different Hebrew words for locusts (v.4), suggesting wave after wave of destruction. The locusts strip everything: vines, fig trees, grain, oil, wine. But Joel sees BEYOND the natural disaster to its theological meaning: this is a foretaste of "the Day of the LORD" (v.15). The plague is both literal judgment AND prophetic preview. Every sector of society is affected: drunkards (no wine), priests (no offerings), farmers (no harvest), even the animals and land itself groan.
Structure:
  • The Unprecedented Plague: Tell Your Children (vv.1-4)
  • Call to Mourn: Drunkards, Priests, Farmers (vv.5-12)
  • Call to Fast and Cry Out (vv.13-14)
  • The Day of the LORD Is Near (vv.15-18)
  • Joel's Prayer: Creation Cries to God (vv.19-20)

Reflection

  • 1. Wave after wave (v.4). Sin doesn't stop at one compromise. What the first temptation leaves, the second consumes. What the second leaves, the third finishes. Address the FIRST locust — don't wait for the fourth.
  • 2. Crisis is a call to corporate prayer (v.14). Not individual panic, not political maneuvering — GATHERING and CRYING OUT together. When disaster strikes your family, church, or community: fast, assemble, pray. This is still the answer.
  • 3. Even creation cries to God (vv.19-20). The animals groan, the land mourns, the rivers dry up. If creation knows enough to "pant for God" (v.20 ESV), how much more should YOU turn to Him in your drought?
  • 4. "The Day of the LORD is near" (v.15). Every crisis is a preview. Every natural disaster whispers: "There is something bigger coming." Live with urgency. Don't treat current warnings as isolated events — they are rehearsals for the final Day.
