1 John — Chapter 3

Loading ESV text...

1Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

3And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

4Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

5And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

6Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

7Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

8He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

9Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

11For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

12Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

13Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

14We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

15Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

16Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

17But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

18My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

19And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

20For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

21Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

22And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

23And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

24And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

1Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and [such] we are. For this cause the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

2Beloved, now are we children of God, and it is not yet made manifest what we shall be. We know that, if he shall be manifested, we shall be like him; for we shall see him even as he is.

3And every one that hath this hope [set] on him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

4Every one that doeth sin doeth also lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.

5And ye know that he was manifested to take away sins; and in him is no sin.

6Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither knoweth him.

7[My] little children, let no man lead you astray: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous:

8he that doeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. To this end was the Son of God manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

9Whosoever is begotten of God doeth no sin, because his seed abideth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is begotten of God.

10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

11For this is the message which ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another:

12not as Cain was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his works were evil, and his brother`s righteous.

13Marvel not, brethren, if the world hateth you.

14We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not abideth in death.

15Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

16Hereby know we love, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

17But whoso hath the world`s goods, and beholdeth his brother in need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how doth the love of God abide in him?

18[My] Little children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue; but in deed and truth.

19Hereby shall we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our heart before him:

20because if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

21Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness toward God;

22and whatsoever we ask we receive of him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight.

23And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as he gave us commandment.

24And he that keepeth his commandments abideth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he gave us.

1(See what sort of love the Father has given to us: that we should be called God’s children—and indeed we are! For this reason the world does not know us: Because it did not know him.

2Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that whenever it is revealed we will be like him because we will see him just as he is.

3And everyone who has this hope focused on him purifies himself, just as Jesus is pure).

4Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; indeed, sin is lawlessness.

5And you know that Jesus was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.

6Everyone who resides in him does not sin; everyone who sins has neither seen him nor known him.

7Little children, let no one deceive you: The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as Jesus is righteous.

8The one who practices sin is of the devil because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was revealed: to destroy the works of the devil.

9Everyone who has been fathered by God does not practice sin because God’s seed resides in them, and thus they are not able to sin because they have been fathered by God.

10By this the children of God and the children of the devil are revealed: Everyone who does not practice righteousness—the one who does not love his fellow Christian—is not of God.

11For this is the gospel message that you have heard from the beginning: that we should love one another,

12not like Cain who was of the evil one and brutally murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his deeds were evil, but his brother’s were righteous.

13Therefore do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.

14We know that we have crossed over from death to life because we love our fellow Christians. The one who does not love remains in death.

15Everyone who hates his fellow Christian is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.

16We have come to know love by this: that Jesus laid down his life for us; thus we ought to lay down our lives for our fellow Christians.

17But whoever has the world’s possessions and sees his fellow Christian in need and shuts off his compassion against him, how can the love of God reside in such a person?

18Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue but in deed and truth.

19And by this we will know that we are of the truth and will convince our conscience in his presence,

20that if our conscience condemns us, that God is greater than our conscience and knows all things.

21Dear friends, if our conscience does not condemn us, we have confidence in the presence of God,

22and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing to him.

23Now this is his commandment: that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he gave us the commandment.

24And the person who keeps his commandments resides in God, and God in him. Now by this we know that God resides in us: by the Spirit he has given us.

1See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! For this cause the world doesn’t know us, because it didn’t know him.

2Beloved, now we are children of God, and it is not yet revealed what we will be. But we know that, when he is revealed, we will be like him; for we will see him just as he is.

3Everyone who has this hope set on him purifies himself, even as he is pure.

4Everyone who sins also commits lawlessness. Sin is lawlessness.

5You know that he was revealed to take away our sins, and in him is no sin.

6Whoever remains in him doesn’t sin. Whoever sins hasn’t seen him and doesn’t know him.

7Little children, let no one lead you astray. He who does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

8He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. To this end the Son of God was revealed: that he might destroy the works of the devil.

9Whoever is born of God doesn’t commit sin, because his seed remains in him; and he can’t sin, because he is born of God.

10In this the children of God are revealed, and the children of the devil. Whoever doesn’t do righteousness is not of God, neither is he who doesn’t love his brother.

11For this is the message which you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another;

12unlike Cain, who was of the evil one, and killed his brother. Why did he kill him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

13Don’t be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you.

14We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. He who doesn’t love his brother remains in death.

15Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.

16By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.

17But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and closes his heart of compassion against him, how does God’s love remain in him?

18My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.

19And by this we know that we are of the truth, and persuade our hearts before him,

20because if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.

21Beloved, if our hearts don’t condemn us, we have boldness toward God;

22and whatever we ask, we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight.

23This is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as he commanded.

24He who keeps his commandments remains in him, and he in him. By this we know that he remains in us, by the Spirit which he gave us.

Summary

"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God" — when He appears we shall be like Him, whoever is born of God does not practice sin, and we know we have passed from death to life because we love the brethren.

Authorship & Background

Author: The Apostle John (see Chapter 1 notes for full details).
Historical Context: Chapter 3 explores what it means to be God's children (vv.1-3), the incompatibility of sin with new birth (vv.4-10), the command to love in action (vv.11-18), and assurance before God (vv.19-24). John draws sharp contrasts: children of God vs. children of the devil, righteousness vs. sin, love vs. hatred, life vs. death.
Children of God (vv.1-3): "Behold, what manner of love" — we are called God's children (v.1). The world doesn't recognize us because it didn't recognize Him (v.1). We don't yet know what we'll be — but when He appears, "we shall be like him" (v.2). This hope purifies (v.3).
Sin and New Birth (vv.4-10): Sin is lawlessness (v.4). Christ came to take away sins (v.5). Those who abide in Him don't practice sin (v.6). Those born of God don't make sin their habit — God's seed remains in them (v.9). This distinguishes God's children from the devil's (v.10).
Love in Action (vv.11-18): Love one another — not like Cain (vv.11-12). The world hates us (v.13). Love proves we've passed from death to life (v.14). Hatred = murder (v.15). Christ's love defined: He laid down His life (v.16). We should do the same (v.16). If you have resources and see a brother in need but don't help — how does God's love dwell in you? (v.17). "Let us not love in word... but in deed and in truth" (v.18).
Assurance (vv.19-24): By loving in deed, we know we're of the truth (v.19). If our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart (v.20). If our heart doesn't condemn us, we have confidence before God (v.21). His commandment: believe in Christ and love one another (v.23).

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik covers the wonder of sonship, sin and new birth, love in action, and assurance of heart.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "What Manner of Love" on v.1 (MTP Vol. 10, No. 581) "BEHOLD — stop and look. WHAT MANNER — what kind, what quality, what origin. Of LOVE — not duty, not obligation — love. The Father hath BESTOWED — given freely, lavished. That we should be CALLED — not just treated as but named, identified as. The SONS of God — not servants, not subjects — sons. This is not earned. This is not deserved. This is love beyond comprehension — that the holy God would call sinners His children."

Reflection

  • 1. "What manner of love... that we should be called the sons of God" (v.1). Do you marvel at your adoption? Or has it become routine? Stop and behold the love that made you God's child.
  • 2. "We shall be like him" (v.2). Your destiny is Christlikeness. Does this hope purify you now (v.3)? Does knowing where you're headed change how you live today?
  • 3. "Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin" (v.9). Is sin still your habit and pattern? Or has new birth produced a new direction? The test is not perfection but trajectory.
  • 4. "Let us not love in word... but in deed and in truth" (v.18). Is your love practical or just verbal? Who needs your active, sacrificial love this week? What deed can you do?
  • 5. "If our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart" (v.20). When guilt overwhelms you, remember: God is bigger than your feelings. His grace is greater than your condemnation.
