1 Timothy — Chapter 6
Loading ESV text...
1Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.
2And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
3If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
6But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
9But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
11But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
12Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
13I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;
14That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
15Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
17Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
18That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
19Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
20O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
21Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.
1Let as many as are servants under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, that the name of God and the doctrine be not blasphemed.
2And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but let them serve them the rather, because they that partake of the benefit are believing and beloved. These things teach and exhort.
3If any man teacheth a different doctrine, and consenteth not to sound words, [even] the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but doting about questionings and disputes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5wranglings of men corrupted in mind and bereft of the truth, supposing that godliness is a way of gain.
6But godliness with contentment is great gain:
7for we brought nothing into the world, for neither can we carry anything out;
8but having food and covering we shall be therewith content.
9But they that are minded to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, such as drown men in destruction and perdition.
10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil: which some reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
11But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
12Fight the good fight of the faith, lay hold on the life eternal, whereunto thou wast called, and didst confess the good confession in the sight of many witnesses.
13I charge thee in the sight of God, who giveth life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed the good confession;
14that thou keep the commandment, without spot, without reproach, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
15which in its own times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16who only hath immortality, dwelling in light unapproachable; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom [be] honor and power eternal. Amen.
17Charge them that are rich in this present world, that they be not highminded, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
18that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
19laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on the life which is [life] indeed.
20O Timothy, guard that which is committed unto [thee], turning away from the profane babblings and oppositions of the knowledge which is falsely so called;
21which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with you.
1Those who are under the yoke as slaves must regard their own masters as deserving of full respect. This will prevent the name of God and Christian teaching from being discredited.
2But those who have believing masters must not show them less respect because they are brothers. Instead they are to serve all the more, because those who benefit from their service are believers and dearly loved. Teach them and exhort them about these things.
3If someone spreads false teachings and does not agree with sound words (that is, those of our Lord Jesus Christ) and with the teaching that accords with godliness,
4he is conceited and understands nothing, but has an unhealthy interest in controversies and verbal disputes. This gives rise to envy, dissension, slanders, evil suspicions,
5and constant bickering by people corrupted in their minds and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a way of making a profit.
6Now godliness combined with contentment brings great profit.
7For we have brought nothing into this world and so we cannot take a single thing out either.
8But if we have food and shelter, we will be satisfied with that.
9Those who long to be rich, however, stumble into temptation and a trap and many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
10For the love of money is the root of all evils. Some people in reaching for it have strayed from the faith and stabbed themselves with many pains.
11But you, as a person dedicated to God, keep away from all that. Instead pursue righteousness, godliness, faithfulness, love, endurance, and gentleness.
12Compete well for the faith and lay hold of that eternal life you were called for and made your good confession for in the presence of many witnesses.
13I charge you before God who gives life to all things and Christ Jesus who made his good confession before Pontius Pilate,
14to obey this command without fault or failure until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ
15—whose appearing the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, will reveal at the right time.
16He alone possesses immortality and lives in unapproachable light, whom no human has ever seen or is able to see. To him be honor and eternal power! Amen.
17Command those who are rich in this world’s goods not to be haughty or to set their hope on riches, which are uncertain, but on God who richly provides us with all things for our enjoyment.
18Tell them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, to be generous givers, sharing with others.
19In this way they will save up a treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the future and so lay hold of what is truly life.
20O Timothy, protect what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the profane chatter and absurdities of so-called “knowledge.”
21By professing it, some have strayed from the faith. Grace be with you all.
1Let as many as are bondservants under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, that the name of God and the doctrine not be blasphemed.
2Those who have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brothers, but rather let them serve them, because those who partake of the benefit are believing and beloved. Teach and exhort these things.
3If anyone teaches a different doctrine, and doesn’t consent to sound words, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness,
4he is conceited, knowing nothing, but obsessed with arguments, disputes, and word battles, from which come envy, strife, insulting, evil suspicions,
5constant friction of people of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. Withdraw yourself from such.
6But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7For we brought nothing into the world, and we certainly can’t carry anything out.
8But having food and clothing, we will be content with that.
9But those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as drown men in ruin and destruction.
10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
11But you, man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.
12Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you confessed the good confession in the sight of many witnesses.
13I command you before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate testified the good confession,
14that you keep the commandment without spot, blameless, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ;
15which in its own times he will show, who is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and eternal power. Amen.
17Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be haughty, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy;
18that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be ready to distribute, willing to share;
19laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold of eternal life.
20Timothy, guard that which is committed to you, turning away from the empty chatter and oppositions of what is falsely called knowledge;
21which some profess, and thus have wandered from the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.

- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik covers servants/masters, false teachers, contentment, the love of money, the charge to Timothy, and instructions for the wealthy.
- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Love of Money" on v.10 (MTP Vol. 10, No. 574) "The LOVE of money — not money itself. Money is a tool; the love of it is a trap. A man may have much money and little love of it. Another may have little money and much love of it. The poor man who covets is as guilty as the rich man who hoards. It is the root of ALL evil — not some evil, all. Trace any sin far enough and you will find covetousness at its root." Sermon: "The Good Fight of Faith" on v.12 (MTP Vol. 9, No. 497) "Fight the GOOD fight. Not every fight is good — some are petty, some are sinful, some are pointless. But the fight of faith is good — noble, worthy, eternal. Lay hold on eternal life — grip it, seize it, don't let go. The Christian life is not a vacation but a campaign. Put on your armor and fight."

Reflection
- 1. "Godliness with contentment is great gain" (v.6). Are you content? What would "enough" look like for you? Can you say that food and clothing are sufficient (v.8)?
- 2. "They that will be rich fall into temptation" (v.9). Examine your heart: is acquiring wealth a driving motivation? What "foolish and hurtful lusts" might the desire for money be producing in your life?
- 3. "The love of money is the root of all evil" (v.10). Where does the love of money show up in your decisions, priorities, and anxieties? How can you loosen money's grip on your heart?
- 4. "Flee these things; and follow after righteousness" (v.11). The Christian life has two movements: fleeing sin and pursuing virtue. What do you need to flee? What do you need to pursue?
- 5. "Fight the good fight of faith" (v.12). Are you fighting or coasting? What battles are you currently engaged in? Are they the RIGHT battles — good fights, not petty ones?
- 6. For those with financial resources (vv.17-19): Are you generous? Ready to share? Storing up treasure in heaven? Or trusting in "uncertain riches"?
