2 Peter — Chapter 3

1This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
3Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
5For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
7But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
8But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
14Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
15And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
16As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
17Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
18But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
1This is now, beloved, the second epistle that I write unto you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by putting you in remembrance;
2that ye should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandments of the Lord and Saviour through your apostles:
3knowing this first, that in the last days mockers shall come with mockery, walking after their own lusts,
4and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
5For this they willfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth compacted out of water and amidst water, by the word of God;
6by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
7but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
8But forget not this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11Seeing that these things are thus all to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in [all] holy living and godliness,
12looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
14Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for these things, give diligence that ye may be found in peace, without spot and blameless in his sight.
15And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote unto you;
16as also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; wherein are some things hard to be understood, which the ignorant and unstedfast wrest, as [they do] also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
17Ye therefore, beloved, knowing [these things] beforehand, beware lest, being carried away with the error of the wicked, ye fall from your own stedfastness.
18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] the glory both now and for ever. Amen.
1Dear friends, this is already the second letter I have written you, in which I am trying to stir up your pure mind by way of reminder:
2I want you to recall both the predictions foretold by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles.
3Above all, understand this: In the last days blatant scoffers will come, being propelled by their own evil urges
4and saying, “Where is his promised return? For ever since our ancestors died, all things have continued as they were from the beginning of creation.”
5For they deliberately suppress this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water.
6Through these things the world existing at that time was destroyed when it was deluged with water.
7But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire, by being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
8Now, dear friends, do not let this one thing escape your notice, that a single day is like a thousand years with the Lord and a thousand years are like a single day.
9The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some regard slowness, but is being patient toward you because he does not wish for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; when it comes, the heavens will disappear with a horrific noise, and the celestial bodies will melt away in a blaze, and the earth and every deed done on it will be laid bare.
11Since all these things are to melt away in this manner, what sort of people must you be, conducting your lives in holiness and godliness,
12while waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God? Because of this day, the heavens will be burned up and dissolve, and the celestial bodies will melt away in a blaze!
13But, according to his promise, we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness truly resides.
14Therefore, dear friends, since you are waiting for these things, strive to be found at peace, without spot or blemish, when you come into his presence.
15And regard the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as also our dear brother Paul wrote to you, according to the wisdom given to him,
16speaking of these things in all his letters. Some things in these letters are hard to understand, things the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they also do to the rest of the scriptures.
17Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard that you do not get led astray by the error of these unprincipled men and fall from your firm grasp on the truth.
18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the honor both now and on that eternal day.
1This is now, beloved, the second letter that I have written to you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by reminding you;
2that you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior:
3knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking after their own lusts,
4and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.”
5For this they willfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth formed out of water and amid water, by the word of God;
6by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished.
7But the heavens that now exist, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
8But don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
11Therefore since all these things will be destroyed like this, what kind of people ought you to be in holy living and godliness,
12looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, which will cause the burning heavens to be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
13But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
14Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things, be diligent to be found in peace, without defect and blameless in his sight.
15Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote to you;
16as also in all of his letters, speaking in them of these things. In those, there are some things that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unsettled twist, as they also do to the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
17You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware, lest being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness.
18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
Summary
Scoffers will deny Christ's return, but the Lord is not slow — "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years" — He is patient, wanting none to perish, and the day of the Lord will come like a thief, dissolving the heavens and earth by fire as we await new heavens and a new earth.

- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "Not Willing That Any Should Perish" on v.9 (MTP Vol. 11, No. 618) "Not willing that ANY should perish — God's heart is for salvation, not destruction. But that ALL should come to repentance — He waits because He wants more to be saved. Every day of delay is a day of mercy. Every sunrise is another opportunity for repentance. God's patience is not indifference — it is love holding back judgment to give more time for grace." Sermon: "New Heavens and New Earth" on v.13 (MTP Vol. 22, No. 1312) "New heavens and a new earth — not patched up, not renovated — new. Wherein dwelleth RIGHTEOUSNESS — not as a visitor but as a permanent resident. Imagine a world where righteousness is at home — where sin is gone, death is gone, tears are gone. That is our hope. That is what we look for. And it is coming."

Reflection
- 1. "Not willing that any should perish" (v.9). God's patience with the world is for salvation. How does this change your view of the "delay" of Christ's return? Are you using the time to share the gospel?
- 2. "What manner of persons ought ye to be?" (v.11). If everything will be dissolved, what matters? How should the certainty of the end shape your priorities, values, and daily choices?
- 3. "New heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness" (v.13). This is your ultimate destination — a world where righteousness is at home. Does this hope sustain you in a world where unrighteousness seems to win?
- 4. "Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord" (v.18). Peter's last word: keep growing. Are you growing? In grace? In knowledge of Christ? What's your growth plan?
- 5. "Beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness" (v.17). What errors threaten your stability? How do you guard against being led astray?
