Haggai — Chapter 2

1In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the LORD by the prophet Haggai, saying,

2Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,

3Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?

4Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:

5According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.

6For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;

7And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.

8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.

9The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

10In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

11Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,

12If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.

13Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.

14Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.

15And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:

16Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty.

17I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD.

18Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD’S temple was laid, consider it.

19Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.

20And again the word of the LORD came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying,

21Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;

22And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.

23In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts.

1In the seventh [month], in the one and twentieth [day] of the month, came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet, saying,

2Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying,

3Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes as nothing?

4Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith Jehovah; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith Jehovah, and work: for I am with you, saith Jehovah of hosts,

5[according to] the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, and my Spirit abode among you: fear ye not.

6For thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;

7and I will shake all nations; and the precious things of all nations shall come; and I will fill this house with glory, saith Jehovah of hosts.

8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith Jehovah of hosts.

9The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, saith Jehovah of hosts; and in this place will I give peace, saith Jehovah of hosts.

10In the four and twentieth [day] of the ninth [month], in the second year of Darius, came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet, saying,

11Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,

12If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any food, shall it become holy? And the priests answered and said, No.

13Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by reason of a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.

14Then answered Haggai and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith Jehovah; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.

15And now, I pray you, consider from this day and backward, before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of Jehovah.

16Through all that time, when one came to a heap of twenty [measures], there were but ten; when one came to the winevat to draw out fifty [vessels], there were but twenty.

17I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the work of your hands; yet ye [turned] not to me, saith Jehovah.

18Consider, I pray you, from this day and backward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth [month], since the day that the foundation of Jehovah`s temple was laid, consider it.

19Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, the vine, and the fig-tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive-tree have not brought forth; from this day will I bless [you].

20And the word of Jehovah came the second time unto Haggai in the four and twentieth [day] of the month, saying,

21Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;

22and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.

23In that day, saith Jehovah of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith Jehovah, and will make thee as a signet; for I have chosen thee, saith Jehovah of hosts.

1On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the Lord’s message came through the prophet Haggai again:

2“Ask the following questions to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the remnant of the people:

3‘Who among you survivors saw the former splendor of this temple? How does it look to you now? Isn’t it nothing by comparison?’

4Even so, take heart, Zerubbabel,” decrees the Lord. “Take heart, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. And take heart all you citizens of the land,” decrees the Lord, “and begin to work. For I am with you,” decrees the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

5“Do not fear, because I made a promise to your ancestors when they left Egypt, and my Spirit even now testifies to you.”

6Moreover, this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has said: “In just a little while I will once again shake the sky and the earth, the sea and the dry ground.

7I will also shake up all the nations, and they will offer their treasures; then I will fill this temple with glory.” So the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has said.

8“The silver and gold will be mine,” decrees the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

9“The future splendor of this temple will be greater than that of former times,” the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has declared. “And in this place I will give peace,” decrees the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month of Darius’ second year, the Lord’s message came to the prophet Haggai:

11“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has said, ‘Ask the priests about the law.

12If someone carries holy meat in a fold of his garment and that fold touches bread, a boiled dish, wine, olive oil, or any other food, will that item become holy?’” The priests answered, “It will not.”

13Then Haggai asked, “If a person who is ritually unclean because of touching a dead body comes in contact with one of these items, will it become unclean?” The priests answered, “It will be unclean.”

14Then Haggai responded, “‘The people of this nation are unclean in my sight,’ decrees the Lord. ‘And so is all their effort; everything they offer is also unclean.

15Now therefore reflect carefully on the recent past, before one stone was laid on another in the Lord’s temple.

16From that time when one came expecting a heap of 20 measures, there were only 10; when one came to the wine vat to draw out 50 measures from it, there were only 20.

17I struck all the products of your labor with blight, disease, and hail, and yet you brought nothing to me,’ says the Lord.

18‘Think carefully about the past: from today, the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, to the day work on the temple of the Lord was resumed, think about it.

19The seed is still in the storehouse, isn’t it? And the vine, fig tree, pomegranate, and olive tree have not produced. Nevertheless, from today on I will bless you.’”

20Then the Lord spoke to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:

21“Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah: ‘I am ready to shake the sky and the earth.

22I will overthrow royal thrones and shatter the might of earthly kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and those who ride them, and horses and their riders will fall as people kill one another.

23On that day,’ says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant,’ says the Lord, ‘and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”

1In the seventh month, in the twenty-first day of the month, Yahweh’s word came by Haggai the prophet, saying,

2“Speak now to Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying,

3‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Isn’t it in your eyes as nothing?

4Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ says Yahweh. ‘Be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ says Yahweh, ‘and work, for I am with you,’ says Yahweh of Armies.

5This is the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit lived among you. ‘Don’t be afraid.’

6For this is what Yahweh of Armies says: ‘Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the dry land;

7and I will shake all nations. The precious things of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory, says Yahweh of Armies.

8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine,’ says Yahweh of Armies.

9‘The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says Yahweh of Armies; ‘and in this place will I give peace,’ says Yahweh of Armies.”

10In the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, Yahweh’s word came by Haggai the prophet, saying,

11“Yahweh of Armies says: Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,

12‘If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and with his fold touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any food, will it become holy?’” The priests answered, “No.”

13Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean by reason of a dead body touch any of these, will it be unclean?” The priests answered, “It will be unclean.”

14Then Haggai answered, “‘So is this people, and so is this nation before me,’ says Yahweh; ‘and so is every work of their hands. That which they offer there is unclean.

15Now, please consider from this day and backward, before a stone was laid on a stone in Yahweh’s temple.

16Through all that time, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty, there were only twenty.

17I struck you with blight, mildew, and hail in all the work of your hands; yet you didn’t turn to me,’ says Yahweh.

18‘Consider, please, from this day and backward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, since the day that the foundation of Yahweh’s temple was laid, consider it.

19Is the seed yet in the barn? Yes, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree haven’t produced. From today I will bless you.’”

20Yahweh’s word came the second time to Haggai in the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying,

21“Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, ‘I will shake the heavens and the earth.

22I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overthrow the chariots, and those who ride in them. The horses and their riders will come down, everyone by the sword of his brother.

23In that day, says Yahweh of Armies, will I take you, Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel,’ says Yahweh, ‘and will make you as a signet, for I have chosen you,’ says Yahweh of Armies.”

Summary

God encourages the builders that the latter glory of this house will exceed the former, promises blessing from this day forward, and declares Zerubbabel chosen as His signet ring — a Messianic foreshadowing.

Authorship & Background

Author: Haggai the prophet. Prophesied in 520 BC (precisely dated). Key theme: rebuilding the Temple — the returned exiles have neglected God's house while building their own. "Is it time for you... to dwell in your ceiled houses, and this house lie waste?" (1:4). "The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former" (2:9).
Classification: Prophetic Oracle — The Greater Glory and the Chosen Signet Key Themes: Encouragement to the discouraged, the latter glory surpassing the former, the shaking of nations, holiness and defilement, the turning point of blessing, Zerubbabel as God's signet ring (Messianic type)
Historical Context: Chapter 2 contains three distinct prophetic messages, each precisely dated. The first (vv.1-9) comes on the twenty-first day of the seventh month — during the Feast of Tabernacles, when the people would remember wilderness wandering and God's faithfulness. Some elderly people who remembered Solomon's Temple (destroyed 586 BC) were weeping at the comparison (Ezra 3:12). The new Temple seemed pitiful.
God's response to their discouragement is not rebuke but encouragement: "Be strong... I am with you... My Spirit remains among you." Then comes the stunning prophecy: the latter glory of this house will EXCEED the former. How? "The desire of all nations shall come" — traditionally understood as a Messianic reference. Jesus Christ Himself would walk in this Temple (the expanded Herodian Temple built on this same foundation).
The third oracle (vv.20-23) elevates Zerubbabel to extraordinary status: God's "signet ring." A signet ring carried the king's authority. God had removed His signet (Jehoiachin, Jer 22:24) but now restores it through Zerubbabel — an ancestor of Christ in both Matthew 1:12 and Luke 3:27.
Structure:
  • Encouragement to the Discouraged Builders (vv.1-5)
  • The Shaking of Nations and Greater Glory (vv.6-9)
  • The Lesson of Holiness and Defilement (vv.10-14)
  • The Turning Point: "From this day I will bless you" (vv.15-19)
  • Zerubbabel: God's Chosen Signet Ring (vv.20-23)

Map & Geography

Reflection

  • 1. "Is it not as nothing in your eyes?" (v.3). Discouragement comes when we compare present reality to past glory or to our idealized expectations. God's response: don't compare. "Be strong and WORK, for I am with you." God's presence makes the smallest effort valuable.
  • 2. "The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former" (v.9). God's plan is always forward-moving. He does not restore us to what was — He brings us to what will be, which is GREATER. Don't mourn what was lost. What God is building now will surpass what came before.
  • 3. Holiness doesn't transfer by proximity; defilement does (vv.12-14). You cannot become holy by sitting in church, any more than touching a holy garment makes bread holy. But sin IS contagious. Guard your heart — and don't assume that religious activity compensates for disobedient living.
  • 4. "From this day will I bless you" (v.19). God marks the moment of obedience as the turning point. There is a "from this day" available to you — a decisive moment when you realign your priorities and God's blessing begins to flow. Today can be that day.
  • 5. God makes His servants a "signet ring" (v.23). Zerubbabel was chosen to bear God's authority. In Christ, YOU are God's signet — stamped with His image, carrying His authority, representing Him in the world. You are not insignificant. You are chosen.
