Nahum — Chapter 2

Loading ESV text...

1He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily.

2For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches.

3The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken.

4The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall justle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightnings.

5He shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defence shall be prepared.

6The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved.

7And Huzzab shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts.

8But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back.

9Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold: for there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture.

10She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and much pain is in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness.

11Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid?

12The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin.

13Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.

1He that dasheth in pieces is come up against thee: keep the fortress, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily.

2For Jehovah restoreth the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel; for the emptiers have emptied them out, and destroyed their vine-branches.

3The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots flash with steel in the day of his preparation, and the cypress [spears] are brandished.

4The chariots rage in the streets; they rush to and fro in the broad ways: the appearance of them is like torches; they run like the lightnings.

5He remembereth his nobles: they stumble in their march; they make haste to the wall thereof, and the mantelet is prepared.

6The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved.

7And it is decreed: she is uncovered, she is carried away; and her handmaids moan as with the voice of doves, beating upon their breasts.

8But Nineveh hath been from of old like a pool of water: yet they flee away. Stand, stand, [they cry]; but none looketh back.

9Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold; for there is no end of the store, the glory of all goodly furniture.

10She is empty, and void, and waste; and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and anguish is in all loins, and the faces of them all are waxed pale.

11Where is the den of the lions, and the feeding-place of the young lions, where the lion [and] the lioness walked, the lion`s whelp, and none made them afraid?

12The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his caves with prey, and his dens with ravin.

13Behold, I am against thee, saith Jehovah of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions; and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.

1(2:2) An enemy who will scatter you, Nineveh, has advanced against you! Guard the rampart! Watch the road! Prepare yourselves for battle! Muster your mighty strength!

2For the Lord is about to restore the majesty of Jacob, as well as the majesty of Israel, though their enemies have plundered them and have destroyed their fields.

3The shields of his warriors are dyed red; the mighty soldiers are dressed in scarlet garments. The chariots are in flashing metal fittings on the day of battle; the soldiers brandish their spears.

4The chariots race madly through the streets, they rush back and forth in the broad plazas; they look like lightning bolts, they dash here and there like flashes of lightning.

5The commander orders his officers; they stumble as they advance; they rush to the city wall, and they set up the covered siege tower.

6The sluice gates are opened; the royal palace is deluged and dissolves.

7Nineveh is taken into exile and is led away; her slave girls moan like doves while they beat their breasts.

8Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days, but now her people are running away; she cries out: “Stop! Stop!”— but no one turns back.

9Her conquerors cry out: “Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold!” There is no end to the treasure— riches of every kind of precious thing.

10Destruction, devastation, and desolation! Hearts faint, knees tremble; every stomach churns, all their faces have turned pale!

11Where now is the den of the lions and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, lioness, and lion cub once prowled and no one disturbed them?

12The lion tore apart as much prey as his cubs needed and strangled prey for his lionesses; he filled his lairs with prey and his dens with torn flesh.

13“I am against you!” declares the Lord of Heaven’s Armies: “I will burn your chariots with fire; the sword will devour your young lions. You will no longer prey upon the land; the voices of your messengers will no longer be heard.”

1He who dashes in pieces has come up against you. Keep the fortress! Watch the way! Strengthen your waist! Fortify your power mightily!

2For Yahweh restores the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel; for the destroyers have destroyed them, and ruined their vine branches.

3The shield of his mighty men is made red. The valiant men are in scarlet. The chariots flash with steel in the day of his preparation, and the pine spears are brandished.

4The chariots rage in the streets. They rush back and forth in the wide ways. Their appearance is like torches. They run like the lightnings.

5He summons his picked troops. They stumble on their way. They dash to its wall, and the protective shield is put in place.

6The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved.

7It is decreed: she is uncovered, she is carried away; and her servants moan as with the voice of doves, beating on their breasts.

8But Nineveh has been from of old like a pool of water, yet they flee away. “Stop! Stop!” they cry, but no one looks back.

9Take the plunder of silver. Take the plunder of gold, for there is no end of the store, the glory of all goodly furniture.

10She is empty, void, and waste. The heart melts, the knees knock together, their bodies and faces have grown pale.

11Where is the den of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion and the lioness walked, the lion’s cubs, and no one made them afraid?

12The lion tore in pieces enough for his cubs, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his caves with the kill, and his dens with prey.

13“Behold, I am against you,” says Yahweh of Armies, “and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions; and I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers will no longer be heard.”

Summary

A vivid battle scene describes the fall of Nineveh — chariots rage in the streets, the river gates are opened, the palace dissolves, and the lion's den of Assyria is plundered and destroyed.

Authorship & Background

Author: Nahum the Elkoshite. Prophesied approximately 663-612 BC. Key theme: God's judgment on Nineveh/Assyria — the city that repented under Jonah has returned to wickedness. God is both 'slow to anger' and one who 'will not at all acquit the wicked' (1:3).
Classification: Prophetic Oracle — The Siege and Fall of Nineveh Key Themes: Vivid battle imagery of Nineveh's destruction, the reversal of Assyrian power, God's restoration of Jacob's majesty, the lion's den emptied, divine declaration: "I am against thee"
Historical Context: Chapter 2 shifts from the theological foundation of chapter 1 to a breathtaking poetic description of Nineveh's actual siege and fall. Nahum writes as though he is an eyewitness — the red shields, the flashing chariots, the panic in the streets, the fleeing populace. This prophecy was fulfilled in 612 BC when a coalition of Babylonians, Medes, and Scythians besieged and destroyed Nineveh.
Assyria had used its military machine to terrorize the ancient world for generations. Their armies were feared above all others. Now that same military might is turned against them. The irony is deliberate: the empire that scattered others is itself scattered; the lion that devoured nations has its den emptied.
Verse 2 provides the theological reason for Nineveh's fall: God is restoring what Assyria stole. The "excellency of Jacob" that Assyria had trampled — destroying the northern kingdom in 722 BC and devastating Judah repeatedly — God is now reclaiming. Nineveh falls not merely through geopolitics but through divine intention.
Structure:
  • The Siege Begins: Prepare for Battle (vv.1-2)
  • The Assault: Chariots, Warriors, and Panic (vv.3-5)
  • The Breakthrough: Flood Gates and Palace Dissolved (vv.6-7)
  • The Flight: Nineveh Emptied Like a Pool (vv.8-10)
  • The Taunt: Where Is the Lion's Den? (vv.11-12)
  • The Divine Declaration: "I Am Against Thee" (v.13)

Map & Geography

  • Nineveh (v.8): Capital of the Assyrian Empire; subject of Jonah and Nahum.

Reflection

  • 1. God restores what the enemy has stolen (v.2). Whatever Assyria plundered from Jacob, God promises to restore. If the enemy has ravaged areas of your life — joy, peace, relationships, purpose — God is in the business of restoration. What was "emptied out" can be refilled.
  • 2. Mocking confidence is futile against God (v.1). Nahum's sarcastic command to "fortify your power mightily" exposes the absurdity of resisting the Almighty. All human strength is nothing when God has declared "I am against thee." Check whether you are building defenses against conviction.
  • 3. The most terrifying words: "I am against thee" (v.13). No wall, army, or strategy can survive when the LORD of hosts is your adversary. The only safety is to be on God's side. Conversely, if God is FOR you, nothing can stand against you (Romans 8:31).
  • 4. Empires built on violence are inherently unstable (vv.11-12). The lion metaphor exposes Assyria's predatory nature — they filled their dens with "torn flesh." Systems built on exploitation contain the seeds of their own destruction. What is built on blood will be washed away by blood.
  • 5. The cry "Stand! Stand!" goes unheeded (v.8). When God's judgment arrives, no human command can hold things together. The systems we think are permanent can drain away like water from a broken pool. Build on the Rock, not on empire.
