1 Peter — Chapter 4

Loading ESV text...

1Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

2That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

3For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

4Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

5Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.

6For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

7But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

8And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

9Use hospitality one to another without grudging.

10As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

11If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

12Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

13But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

14If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

15But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.

16Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

17For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

18And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

19Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

1Forasmuch then as Christ suffered in the flesh, arm ye yourselves also with the same mind; for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

2that ye no longer should live the rest of your time in flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

3For the time past may suffice to have wrought the desire of the Gentiles, and to have walked in lasciviousness, lusts, winebibbings, revellings, carousings, and abominable idolatries:

4wherein they think strange that ye run not with [them] into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of [of]:

5who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the living and the dead.

6For unto this end was the gospel preached even to the dead, that they might be judged indeed according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

7But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore of sound mind, and be sober unto prayer:

8above all things being fervent in your love among yourselves; for love covereth a multitude of sins:

9using hospitality one to another without murmuring:

10according as each hath received a gift, ministering it among yourselves, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God;

11if any man speaketh, [speaking] as it were oracles of God; is any man ministereth, [ministering] as of the strength which God supplieth: that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, whose is the glory and the dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

12Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial among you, which cometh upon you to prove you, as though a strange thing happened unto you:

13but insomuch as ye are partakers of Christ`s sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory also ye may rejoice with exceeding joy.

14If ye are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed [are ye]; because the [Spirit] of glory and the Spirit of God resteth upon you.

15For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil-doer, or as a meddler in other men`s matters:

16but if [a man suffer] as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this name.

17For the time [is come] for judgment to begin at the house of God: and if [it begin] first at us, what [shall be] the end of them that obey not the gospel of God?

18And if the righteous is scarcely saved, where shall the ungodly and sinner appear?

19Wherefore let them also that suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing unto a faithful Creator.

1So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin,

2in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires.

3For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries.

4So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you.

5They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.

6Now it was for this very purpose that the gospel was preached to those who are now dead, so that though they were judged in the flesh by human standards they may live spiritually by God’s standards.

7For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer.

8Above all keep your love for one another fervent because love covers a multitude of sins.

9Show hospitality to one another without complaining.

10Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God.

11Whoever speaks, let it be with God’s words. Whoever serves, do so with the strength that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

12Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you.

13But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad.

14If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you.

15But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker.

16But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name.

17For it is time for judgment to begin, starting with the house of God. And if it starts with us, what will be the fate of those who are disobedient to the gospel of God?

18And if the righteous are barely saved, what will become of the ungodly and sinners?

19So then let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator as they do good.

1Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind; for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin;

2that you no longer should live the rest of your time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.

3For we have spent enough of our past time doing the desire of the Gentiles, and having walked in lewdness, lusts, drunken binges, orgies, carousings, and abominable idolatries.

4They think it is strange that you don’t run with them into the same excess of riot, blaspheming:

5who will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

6For to this end the Good News was preached even to the dead, that they might be judged indeed as men in the flesh, but live as to God in the spirit.

7But the end of all things is near. Therefore be of sound mind, self-controlled, and sober in prayer.

8And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins.

9Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.

10As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.

11If anyone speaks, let it be as it were the very words of God. If anyone serves, let it be as of the strength which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

12Beloved, don’t be astonished at the fiery trial which has come upon you, to test you, as though a strange thing happened to you.

13But because you are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory you also may rejoice with exceeding joy.

14If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed; because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. On their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified.

15For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil doer, or a meddler in other men’s matters.

16But if one of you suffers for being a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this matter.

17For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God. If it begins first with us, what will happen to those who don’t obey the Good News of God?

18“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will happen to the ungodly and the sinner?”

19Therefore let them also who suffer according to the will of God in doing good entrust their souls to him, as to a faithful Creator.

Summary

Since Christ suffered in the flesh, believers should arm themselves with the same mindset, live for God's will rather than human passions, rejoice in sharing Christ's sufferings, and remember that "judgment must begin at the house of God."

Authorship & Background

Author: Peter the Apostle (see Chapter 1 notes for full details).
Historical Context: Chapter 4 addresses living differently from the pagan world (vv.1-6), practical community life in light of the end (vv.7-11), and rejoicing in suffering for Christ (vv.12-19). Peter's readers faced social ostracism for refusing to participate in pagan practices. He encourages them: your former life is over, suffering for Christ is an honor, and judgment begins with God's house.
Living Differently (vv.1-6): Arm yourself with Christ's mindset toward suffering (v.1). Stop living for human desires; live for God's will (v.2). Your past pagan life is enough (v.3). Former friends think it strange you've changed and slander you (v.4). They will answer to God (v.5).
Community Life (vv.7-11): The end is near — be sober and prayerful (v.7). "Above all things have fervent charity" — love covers sins (v.8). Practice hospitality without complaining (v.9). Use your gifts to serve others as stewards of God's grace (v.10). Speak God's words; serve in God's strength — so God gets the glory (v.11).
Suffering as a Christian (vv.12-19): Don't be surprised by fiery trials (v.12). Rejoice — you share Christ's sufferings and will share His glory (v.13). If reproached for Christ's name, you're blessed (v.14). Don't suffer as a criminal — but if as a Christian, glorify God (vv.15-16). Judgment begins at God's house (v.17). Commit your soul to a faithful Creator (v.19).

Covers a multitude of sins — not hides them from God but overlooks them in others. Love doesn't keep a record of wrongs. Love doesn't broadcast failures. Love covers — protects, forgives, moves past. This is the supreme priority of community life: fervent, covering love."

Reflection

  • 1. "The end of all things is at hand" (v.7). Does the nearness of the end produce sobriety and prayer in you? Or complacency? How should urgency shape your daily life?
  • 2. "Above all things have fervent charity" (v.8). Is love your top priority in community? Do you cover others' sins with love or expose them? Is your love fervent or lukewarm?
  • 3. "As every man hath received the gift, even so minister" (v.10). What gift has God given you? Are you using it to serve others? You are a steward — the gift is not for you alone.
  • 4. "Think it not strange concerning the fiery trial" (v.12). Are you surprised when suffering comes? Peter says don't be — it's normal. Can you rejoice in it as sharing Christ's sufferings?
  • 5. "Commit the keeping of their souls to him" (v.19). In suffering, entrust yourself to God — your faithful Creator. Are you holding on to control, or releasing yourself into His hands?
