1 Peter — Chapter 5

1The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
4And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
5Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
11To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
12By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.
13The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.
14Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
1The elders among you I exhort, who am a fellow-elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, who am also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2Tend the flock of God which is among you, exercising the oversight, not of constraint, but willingly, according to [the will of] God; nor yet for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3neither as lording it over the charge allotted to you, but making yourselves ensamples to the flock.
4And when the chief Shepherd shall be manifested, ye shall receive the crown of glory that fadeth not away.
5Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you gird yourselves with humility, to serve one another: for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.
6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;
7casting all your anxiety upon him, because he careth for you.
8Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour,
9whom withstand stedfast in your faith, knowing that the same sufferings are accomplished in your brethren who are in the world.
10And the God of all grace, who called you unto his eternal glory in Christ, after that ye have suffered a little while, shall himself perfect, establish, strengthen you.
11To him [be] the dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
12By Silvanus, our faithful brother, as I account [him], I have written unto you briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand ye fast therein.
13She that is in Babylon, elect together with [you], saluteth you; and [so doth] Mark my son.
14Salute one another with a kiss of love. Peace be unto you all that are in Christ.
1So as your fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings and as one who shares in the glory that will be revealed, I urge the elders among you:
2Give a shepherd’s care to God’s flock among you, exercising oversight not merely as a duty but willingly under God’s direction, not for shameful profit but eagerly.
3And do not lord it over those entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock.
4Then when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that never fades away.
5In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
6And God will exalt you in due time, if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand
7by casting all your cares on him because he cares for you.
8Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour.
9Resist him, strong in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are enduring the same kinds of suffering.
10And, after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
11To him belongs the power forever. Amen.
12Through Silvanus, whom I know to be a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, in order to encourage you and testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.
13The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, greets you, and so does Mark, my son.
14Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
1Therefore I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and who will also share in the glory that will be revealed.
2Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion, but voluntarily, not for dishonest gain, but willingly;
3neither as lording it over those entrusted to you, but making yourselves examples to the flock.
4When the chief Shepherd is revealed, you will receive the crown of glory that doesn’t fade away.
5Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, to subject yourselves to one another; for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;
7casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
8Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
9Withstand him steadfast in your faith, knowing that your brothers who are in the world are undergoing the same sufferings.
10But may the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.
11To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.
12Through Silvanus, our faithful brother, as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand.
13She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, greets you; and so does Mark, my son.
14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "Casting All Your Care Upon Him" on v.7 (MTP Vol. 34, No. 2039) "CASTING — not carrying, not managing, not worrying — casting. Like throwing a heavy burden off your back onto someone stronger. ALL your care — not some, not the big ones only — all. Upon HIM — the Almighty, the All-sufficient, the All-loving. For HE CARETH for you — the reason you can cast: He cares. He is not indifferent. Your concerns concern Him. Your burdens burden Him. Cast them — He wants them." Sermon: "The Roaring Lion" on v.8 (MTP Vol. 7, No. 393) "A roaring lion — not a sleeping kitten. He walks about — he is active, restless, always on the move. Seeking — he has a purpose, a strategy. Whom he MAY devour — not whom he will, but whom he may. He cannot devour everyone — only those who are not sober and vigilant. Be alert. Be watchful. He is real, he is active, and he is looking for the careless."

Reflection
- 1. "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you" (v.7). What anxieties are you carrying that you need to cast on God? He cares — your concerns matter to Him. Will you throw them onto Him today?
- 2. "Be sober, be vigilant" (v.8). Are you spiritually alert? Or drowsy and careless? The devil is active — are you watchful? Where are you most vulnerable to his attacks?
- 3. "Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God" (v.6). Are you fighting God's hand or submitting to it? Humility now leads to exaltation later. Where do you need to humble yourself?
- 4. "After that ye have suffered a while" (v.10). Your suffering has an expiration date — "a while." And after it: God will perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. Can you endure knowing restoration is coming?
- 5. For leaders: Are you shepherding willingly, eagerly, and by example (vv.2-3)? Or under compulsion, for money, and by domineering? What kind of leader are you?
