Amos — Chapter 9

Loading ESV text...

1I saw the LORD standing upon the altar: and he said, Smite the lintel of the door, that the posts may shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.

2Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down:

3And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them:

4And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.

5And the Lord GOD of hosts is he that toucheth the land, and it shall melt, and all that dwell therein shall mourn: and it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and shall be drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.

6It is he that buildeth his stories in the heaven, and hath founded his troop in the earth; he that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name.

7Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

8Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.

9For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.

10All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us.

11In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:

12That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this.

13Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.

14And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

15And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.

1I saw the Lord standing beside the altar: and he said, Smite the capitals, that the thresholds may shake; and break them in pieces on the head of all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: there shall not one of them flee away, and there shall not one of them escape.

2Though they dig into Sheol, thence shall my hand take them; and though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down.

3And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and it shall bite them.

4And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.

5For the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, [is] he that toucheth the land and it melteth, and all that dwell therein shall mourn; and it shall rise up wholly like the River, and shall sink again, like the River of Egypt;

6[it is] he that buildeth his chambers in the heavens, and hath founded his vault upon the earth; he that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth; Jehovah is his name.

7Are ye not as the children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith Jehovah. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

8Behold, the eyes of the Lord Jehovah are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; save that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith Jehovah.

9For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, like as [grain] is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least kernel fall upon the earth.

10All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, who say, The evil shall not overtake nor meet us.

11In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old;

12that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations that are called by my name, saith Jehovah that doeth this.

13Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.

14And I will bring back the captivity of my people Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

15And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be plucked up out of their land which I have given them, saith Jehovah thy God.

1I saw the Lord standing by the altar and he said, “Strike the tops of the support pillars, so the thresholds shake! Knock them down on the heads of all the people, and I will kill the survivors with the sword. No one will be able to run away; no one will be able to escape.

2Even if they could dig down into the netherworld, my hand would pull them up from there. Even if they could climb up to heaven, I would drag them down from there.

3Even if they were to hide on the top of Mount Carmel, I would hunt them down and take them from there. Even if they tried to hide from me at the bottom of the sea, from there I would command the Sea Serpent to bite them.

4Even when their enemies drive them into captivity, from there I will command the sword to kill them. I will not let them out of my sight; they will experience disaster, not prosperity.”

5The Sovereign Lord of Heaven’s Armies will do this. He touches the earth and it dissolves; all who live on it mourn. The whole earth rises like the Nile River and then grows calm like the Nile in Egypt.

6He builds the upper rooms of his palace in heaven and sets its foundation supports on the earth. He summons the water of the sea and pours it out on the earth’s surface. The Lord is his name.

7“You Israelites are just like the Ethiopians in my sight,” says the Lord. “Certainly I brought Israel up from the land of Egypt, but I also brought the Philistines from Caphtor and the Arameans from Kir.

8Look, the Sovereign Lord is watching the sinful nation, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth. But I will not completely destroy the family of Jacob,” says the Lord.

9“For look, I am giving a command, and I will shake the family of Israel together with all the nations. It will resemble a sieve being shaken, when not even a pebble falls to the ground.

10All the sinners among my people will die by the sword— the ones who say, ‘Disaster will not come near, it will not confront us.’

11“In that day I will rebuild the collapsing hut of David. I will seal its gaps, repair its ruins, and restore it to what it was like in days gone by.

12As a result they will conquer those left in Edom and all the nations subject to my rule.” The Lord, who is about to do this, is speaking.

13“Be sure of this, the time is coming,” says the Lord, “when the plowman will catch up to the reaper, and the one who stomps the grapes will overtake the planter. Juice will run down the slopes; it will flow down all the hillsides.

14I will bring back my people, Israel; they will rebuild the cities lying in rubble and settle down. They will plant vineyards and drink the wine they produce; they will grow orchards and eat the fruit they produce.

15I will plant them on their land, and they will never again be uprooted from the land I have given them,” says the Lord your God.

1I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and he said, “Strike the tops of the pillars, that the thresholds may shake; and break them in pieces on the head of all of them; and I will kill the last of them with the sword: there shall not one of them flee away, and there shall not one of them escape.

2Though they dig into Sheol, there my hand will take them; and though they climb up to heaven, there I will bring them down.

3Though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out there; and though they be hidden from my sight in the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent, and it will bite them.

4Though they go into captivity before their enemies, there I will command the sword, and it will kill them. I will set my eyes on them for evil, and not for good.

5For the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, is he who touches the land and it melts, and all who dwell in it will mourn; and it will rise up wholly like the River, and will sink again, like the River of Egypt.

6It is he who builds his rooms in the heavens, and has founded his vault on the earth; he who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the surface of the earth; Yahweh is his name.

7Are you not like the children of the Ethiopians to me, children of Israel?” says Yahweh. “Haven’t I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

8Behold, the eyes of the Lord Yahweh are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the surface of the earth; except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,” says Yahweh.

9“For, behold, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, as grain is sifted in a sieve, yet not the least kernel will fall on the earth.

10All the sinners of my people will die by the sword, who say, ‘Evil won’t overtake nor meet us.’

11In that day I will raise up the tent of David who is fallen, and close up its breaches, and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old;

12that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations who are called by my name,” says Yahweh who does this.

13“Behold, the days come,” says Yahweh, “that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the one treading grapes him who sows seed; and sweet wine will drip from the mountains, and flow from the hills.

14I will bring my people Israel back from captivity, and they will rebuild the ruined cities, and inhabit them; and they will plant vineyards, and drink wine from them. They shall also make gardens, and eat their fruit.

15I will plant them on their land, and they will no more be plucked up out of their land which I have given them,” says Yahweh your God.

Summary

God declares there is no escape from His judgment — He will sift Israel among the nations yet not destroy them utterly, and the book closes with a promise to restore David's fallen booth and bring unprecedented agricultural blessing.

Authorship & Background

Author: Amos, a shepherd from Tekoa in Judah who prophesied to the northern kingdom (approximately 760-750 BC). Key theme: social justice — God judges nations (including Israel) for oppressing the poor. "Let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream" (5:24).
Classification: Prophetic Vision and Oracle — Inescapable Judgment and Glorious Restoration Key Themes: No escape from God, the sifting of Israel, "not the least grain shall fall," the tabernacle of David raised up, Messianic restoration, permanent planting in the land
Historical Context: Chapter 9 is the FINALE of Amos — containing both his darkest vision (vv.1-4: total inescapability of judgment) and his brightest hope (vv.11-15: restoration of David's kingdom). The vision opens with God STANDING on the altar — not in worship but in JUDGMENT — commanding the destruction of the temple and everyone in it. Nowhere is safe: not Sheol, not heaven, not the sea floor, not captivity (vv.2-4). Yet the book does NOT end with destruction. Verse 11 introduces the "tabernacle of David" — the fallen Davidic dynasty that God will RAISE UP. James quotes v.11-12 at the Jerusalem Council (Acts 15:16-17) as fulfilled in Gentile inclusion. The book ends with paradise: abundant harvest, rebuilt cities, and permanent planting.
Structure:
  • Vision 5: The LORD at the Altar — No Escape (vv.1-4)
  • Doxology: The Sovereign God (vv.5-6)
  • Israel Not Special in Judgment — But Preserved (vv.7-10)
  • The Tabernacle of David Restored (vv.11-12)
  • Paradise Restored: Abundance and Permanence (vv.13-15)

Map & Geography

  • Carmel (v.3): Mountain range along the Mediterranean coast; site of Elijah's contest with Baal.
  • Egypt (v.5, v.7): Land to the southwest; place of Israel's bondage and exodus.
  • Edom (v.12): Land south of the Dead Sea; descendants of Esau.

Reflection

  • 1. "Not the least grain shall fall" (v.9). In God's sifting of your life — the shaking, the testing, the loss — nothing of TRUE value is lost. The chaff goes; the grain stays. Trust the Sifter. What remains after the shaking is what was real.
  • 2. God rebuilds fallen things (v.11). Your "tabernacle" may be fallen — your ministry, your family, your dreams reduced to a hut. God RAISES ruins. He REPAIRS breaches. He REBUILDS. Bring Him your brokenness and watch Him work.
  • 3. There is nowhere to hide from God (vv.2-4). You cannot outrun, outclimb, out-dive, or out-distance God. This is terrifying for the rebellious and comforting for the faithful. Either way: God is inescapable. Make peace with His presence now.
  • 4. The book ends with PERMANENCE (v.15). "No more pulled up." After all the judgment, all the exile, all the shaking — God's FINAL word is permanent establishment. Your current instability is not your destiny. God's plan ends with you PLANTED, not pulled.
  • 5. James applied v.11 to GENTILE inclusion (Acts 15). The "tabernacle of David" rebuilt means the door is open to ALL peoples. The restoration of God's kingdom is not exclusive — it draws in the nations.
