Jonah — Chapter 2
Loading ESV text...
1Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly,
2And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
3For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
4Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
5The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
7When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.
8They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
9But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.
10And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
1Then Jonah prayed unto Jehovah his God out of the fish`s belly.
2And he said, I called by reason of mine affliction unto Jehovah, And he answered me; Out of the belly of Sheol cried I, [And] thou heardest my voice.
3For thou didst cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas, And the flood was round about me; All thy waves and thy billows passed over me.
4And I said, I am cast out from before thine eyes; Yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
5The waters compassed me about, even to the soul; The deep was round about me; The weeds were wrapped about my head.
6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; The earth with its bars [closed] upon me for ever: Yet hast thou brought up my life from the pit, O Jehovah my God.
7When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Jehovah; And my prayer came in unto thee, into thy holy temple.
8They that regard lying vanities Forsake their own mercy.
9But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation is of Jehovah.
10And Jehovah spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
1Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish
2and said, “I called out to the Lord from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer.
3You threw me into the deep waters, into the middle of the sea; the ocean current engulfed me; all the mighty waves you sent swept over me.
4I thought I had been banished from your sight and that I would never again see your holy temple.
5Water engulfed me up to my neck; the deep ocean surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
6I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever, but you brought me up from the Pit, O Lord, my God.
7When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the Lord. And my prayer came to you, to your holy temple.
8Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs.
9But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise; I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the Lord!”
10Then the Lord commanded the fish and it vomited Jonah out onto dry land.
1Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh, his God, out of the fish’s belly.
2He said, “I called because of my affliction to Yahweh. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice.
3For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your waves and your billows passed over me.
4I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’
5The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The deep was around me. The weeds were wrapped around my head.
6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever: yet have you brought up my life from the pit, Yahweh my God.
7“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.
8Those who regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
9But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to Yahweh.”
10Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah on the dry land.

Reflection
- 1. You can pray from the belly of anything (v.1). Inside a fish, inside addiction, inside consequences, inside rock bottom — PRAYER still works. No location disqualifies your cry. God hears from the belly of hell.
- 2. "Yet I will look toward thy holy temple" (v.4). In your darkest moment, CHOOSE faith. Feelings say "cast out." Faith says "yet I will look." The "yet" of faith overrides the evidence of circumstances.
- 3. "Salvation is of the LORD" (v.9). Not of you. Not of your effort, your worthiness, your timing, or your theology. Of the LORD. Period. This humbles the self-righteous and encourages the hopeless simultaneously.
- 4. The fish obeyed God faster than Jonah (v.10). Animals respond to God's command instantly. The prophet needed a near-death experience. How much does God have to put you through before you simply obey?
- 5. "They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy" (v.8). Every idol you cling to is a mercy you're forfeiting. What "lying vanities" are you holding that are costing you God's mercy? Let them go.
