Micah — Chapter 2

1Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.

2And they covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

3Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I devise an evil, from which ye shall not remove your necks; neither shall ye go haughtily: for this time is evil.

4In that day shall one take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, and say, We be utterly spoiled: he hath changed the portion of my people: how hath he removed it from me! turning away he hath divided our fields.

5Therefore thou shalt have none that shall cast a cord by lot in the congregation of the LORD.

6Prophesy ye not, say they to them that prophesy: they shall not prophesy to them, that they shall not take shame.

7O thou that art named the house of Jacob, is the spirit of the LORD straitened? are these his doings? do not my words do good to him that walketh uprightly?

8Even of late my people is risen up as an enemy: ye pull off the robe with the garment from them that pass by securely as men averse from war.

9The women of my people have ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their children have ye taken away my glory for ever.

10Arise ye, and depart; for this is not your rest: because it is polluted, it shall destroy you, even with a sore destruction.

11If a man walking in the spirit and falsehood do lie, saying, I will prophesy unto thee of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.

12I will surely assemble, O Jacob, all of thee; I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put them together as the sheep of Bozrah, as the flock in the midst of their fold: they shall make great noise by reason of the multitude of men.

13The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it: and their king shall pass before them, and the LORD on the head of them.

1Woe to them that devise iniquity and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.

2And they covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away: and they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

3Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Behold, against this family do I devise an evil, from which ye shall not remove your necks, neither shall ye walk haughtily; for it is an evil time.

4In that day shall they take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, [and] say, We are utterly ruined: he changeth the portion of my people: how doth he remove [it] from me! to the rebellious he divideth our fields.

5Therefore thou shalt have none that shall cast the line by lot in the assembly of Jehovah.

6Prophesy ye not, [thus] they prophesy. They shall not prophesy to these: reproaches shall not depart.

7Shall it be said, O house of Jacob, Is the Spirit of Jehovah straitened? are these his doings? Do not my words do good to him that walketh uprightly?

8But of late my people is risen up as an enemy: ye strip the robe from off the garment from them that pass by securely [as men] averse from war.

9The women of my people ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their young children ye take away my glory for ever.

10Arise ye, and depart; for this is not your resting-place; because of uncleanness that destroyeth, even with a grievous destruction.

11If a man walking in a spirit of falsehood do lie, [saying], I will prophesy unto thee of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.

12I will surely assemble, O Jacob, all of thee; I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put them together as the sheep of Bozrah, as a flock in the midst of their pasture; they shall make great noise by reason of [the multitude of] men.

13The breaker is gone up before them: they have broken forth and passed on to the gate, and are gone out thereat; and their king is passed on before them, and Jehovah at the head of them.

1Beware wicked schemers, those who devise calamity as they lie in bed. As soon as morning dawns they carry out their plans, because they have the power to do so.

2They confiscate the fields they desire and seize the houses they want. They defraud people of their homes and deprive people of the land they have inherited.

3Therefore the Lord says this: “Look, I am devising disaster for this nation! It will be like a yoke from which you cannot free your neck. You will no longer walk proudly, for it will be a time of catastrophe.

4In that day people will sing this taunt song to you— they will mock you with this lament: ‘We are completely destroyed; they sell off the property of my people. How they remove it from me! They assign our fields to the conqueror.’”

5Therefore no one will assign you land in the Lord’s community.

6“Don’t preach with such impassioned rhetoric,” they say excitedly. “These prophets should not preach of such things; we will not be overtaken by humiliation.”

7Does the family of Jacob say, “The Lord’s patience can’t be exhausted— he would never do such things”? To be sure, my commands bring a reward for those who obey them,

8but you rise up as an enemy against my people. You steal a robe from a friend, from those who pass by peacefully as if returning from a war.

9You wrongly evict widows among my people from their cherished homes. You defraud their children of their prized inheritance.

10But you are the ones who will be forced to leave! For this land is not secure; sin will thoroughly destroy it!

11If a lying windbag should come and say, ‘I’ll promise you blessings of wine and beer,’ he would be just the right preacher for these people!

12“I will certainly gather all of you, O Jacob, I will certainly assemble those Israelites who remain. I will bring them together like sheep in a fold, like a flock in the middle of a pasture; they will be so numerous that they will make a lot of noise.

13The one who can break through barriers will lead them out; they will break out, pass through the gate, and leave. Their king will advance before them; the Lord himself will lead them.”

1Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.

2They covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away: and they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

3Therefore Yahweh says: “Behold, I am planning against these people a disaster, from which you will not remove your necks, neither will you walk haughtily; for it is an evil time.

4In that day they will take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, saying, ‘We are utterly ruined! My people’s possession is divided up. Indeed he takes it from me and assigns our fields to traitors!’”

5Therefore you will have no one who divides the land by lot in Yahweh’s assembly.

6“Don’t prophesy!” They prophesy. “Don’t prophesy about these things. Disgrace won’t overtake us.”

7Shall it be said, O house of Jacob: “Is Yahweh’s Spirit angry? Are these his doings? Don’t my words do good to him who walks blamelessly?”

8But lately my people have risen up as an enemy. You strip the robe and clothing from those who pass by without a care, returning from battle.

9You drive the women of my people out from their pleasant houses; from their young children you take away my blessing forever.

10Arise, and depart! For this is not your resting place, because of uncleanness that destroys, even with a grievous destruction.

11If a man walking in a spirit of falsehood lies: “I will prophesy to you of wine and of strong drink”; he would be the prophet of this people.

12I will surely assemble, Jacob, all of you; I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put them together as the sheep of Bozrah, as a flock in the middle of their pasture; they will swarm with people.

13He who breaks open the way goes up before them. They break through the gate, and go out. And their king passes on before them, with Yahweh at their head.

Summary

Woe to those who devise wickedness on their beds and seize fields by violence — God plans disaster against this family of oppressors, and they will have none to cast the measuring line in the assembly.

Authorship & Background

Author: Micah of Moresheth. Prophesied approximately 735-700 BC to both Israel and Judah. Contemporary with Isaiah. Key theme: social justice, true religion, and Messianic hope. Famous verses: 'But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah... out of thee shall he come forth' (5:2) and 'What doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?' (6:8).
Classification: Prophetic Woe Oracle — Judgment Against Oppressors Key Themes: Social injustice, land theft, oppression of the poor, false prophets, remnant hope
Historical Context: Chapter 2 shifts from the cosmic judgment scene of chapter 1 to a specific indictment of social sins. Micah identifies the root evil plaguing both kingdoms: wealthy landowners and powerful elites were systematically dispossessing common people of their ancestral land. In Israel's covenant theology, land was not merely property—it was God's gift to each family as their inheritance (Leviticus 25). To steal land was to steal a family's God-given heritage.
This was the era of large estate-building. Wealthy men would lie awake at night devising schemes to seize the fields and homes of vulnerable neighbors. The legal system, controlled by the same powerful class, offered no protection. Isaiah condemned the same evil: "Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field" (Isaiah 5:8).
Micah's audience did not want to hear this message. Verse 6 reveals they tried to silence him—"Do not preach!" they said. They preferred prophets who would promise wine and prosperity (v. 11). Yet the chapter ends with a surprising note of hope: God will one day gather His remnant like sheep in a fold, and "the breaker" will go before them (vv. 12-13).
Structure:
  • Woe against those who plot evil (vv. 1-2)
  • God's judgment against the oppressors (vv. 3-5)
  • Conflict with false prophets (vv. 6-7)
  • Further indictment: exploitation of the vulnerable (vv. 8-11)
  • Promise of future restoration—the remnant gathered (vv. 12-13)

Reflection

  • 1. Sin often begins in the mind before it reaches the hand. The oppressors "devised iniquity upon their beds"—they planned their evil in private. Guard your thought life and what occupies your mind during quiet hours.
  • 2. Power is a trust, not a license. "Because it is in the power of their hand" reveals that ability without accountability leads to abuse. Every position of influence carries responsibility before God.
  • 3. People who don't want accountability will try to silence truth-tellers (v. 6). When Scripture confronts us and we want to push back, that's often the moment we most need to listen.
  • 4. There is always hope in God's remnant plan. Even in the midst of severe judgment, God promises to gather a flock. No matter how dark the hour, God preserves His people and sends "the breaker" before them.
  • 5. The "breaker" image (v. 13) points forward to Christ who breaks open every barrier between us and God—sin, death, and the power of the enemy. He goes before us and leads us out.
