1Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,

2That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.

3And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.

4Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.

5And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein,

6These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city;

7Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this;

8The children of Parosh, two thousand an hundred seventy and two.

9The children of Shephatiah, three hundred seventy and two.

10The children of Arah, six hundred fifty and two.

60All the Nethinims, and the children of Solomon’s servants, were three hundred ninety and two.

61And these were they which went up also from Telmelah, Telharesha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer: but they could not shew their father’s house, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel.

62The children of Delaiah, the children of Tobiah, the children of Nekoda, six hundred forty and two.

63And of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai, which took one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite to wife, and was called after their name.

64These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but it was not found: therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood.

65And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.

66The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore,

67Beside their manservants and their maidservants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and they had two hundred forty and five singing men and singing women.

68Their horses, seven hundred thirty and six: their mules, two hundred forty and five:

69Their camels, four hundred thirty and five: six thousand seven hundred and twenty asses.

70And some of the chief of the fathers gave unto the work. The Tirshatha gave to the treasure a thousand drams of gold, fifty basons, five hundred and thirty priests’ garments.

71And some of the chief of the fathers gave to the treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand and two hundred pounds of silver.

72And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand pounds of silver, and threescore and seven priests’ garments.

73So the priests, and the Levites, and the porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.

1Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,

2that I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the governor of the castle, charge over Jerusalem; for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.

3And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand [on guard], let them shut the doors, and bar ye them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one [to be] over against his house.

4Now the city was wide and large; but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.

5And my God put into my heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found the book of the genealogy of them that came up at the first, and I found written therein:

40The children of Immer, a thousand fifty and two.

59the children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil, the children of Pochereth-hazzebaim, the children of Amon.

60All the Nethinim, and the children of Solomon`s servants, were three hundred ninety and two.

61And these were they that went up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer; but they could not show their fathers` houses, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel:

63And of the priests: the children of Hobaiah, the children of Hakkoz, the children of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name.

64These sought their register [among] those that were reckoned by genealogy, but it was not found: therefore were they deemed polluted and put from the priesthood.

65And the governor said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.

68Their horses were seven hundred thirty and six; their mules, two hundred forty and five;

70And some from among the heads of fathers` [houses] gave unto the work. The governor gave to the treasury a thousand darics of gold, fifty basins, five hundred and thirty priests` garments.

71And some of the heads of fathers` [houses] gave into the treasury of the work twenty thousand darics of gold, and two thousand and two hundred pounds of silver.

72And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand darics of gold, and two thousand pounds of silver, and threescore and seven priests` garments.

73So the priests, and the Levites, and the porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinim, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities. And when the seventh month was come, the children of Israel were in their cities.

1When the wall had been rebuilt and I had positioned the doors, and the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed,

2I then put in charge over Jerusalem my brother Hanani and Hananiah the chief of the citadel, for he was a faithful man and feared God more than many do.

3I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem must not be opened in the early morning, until those who are standing guard close the doors and lock them. Position residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their guard stations and some near their homes.”

4Now the city was spread out and large, and there were not a lot of people in it. At that time houses had not been rebuilt.

5My God placed it on my heart to gather the leaders, the officials, and the ordinary people so they could be enrolled on the basis of genealogy. I found the genealogical records of those who had formerly returned. Here is what I found written in that record:

6These are the people of the province who returned from the captivity of the exiles, whom King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had forced into exile. They returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, each to his own city.

7They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. The number of Israelite men was as follows:

60All the temple servants and the descendants of the servants of Solomon, 392.

61These are the ones who came up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Kerub, Addon, and Immer (although they were unable to certify their family connection or their ancestry, as to whether they were really from Israel):

62the descendants of Delaiah, the descendants of Tobiah, and the descendants of Nekoda, 642.

63And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah, the descendants of Hakkoz, and the descendants of Barzillai (who had married a woman from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by that name).

64They searched for their records in the genealogical materials, but none were found. They were therefore excluded from the priesthood.

65The governor instructed them not to eat any of the sacred food until there was a priest who could consult the Urim and Thummim.

66The entire group numbered 42,360—

67not counting their 7,337 male and female servants. They also had 245 male and female singers.

68They had 736 horses, 245 mules,

69(7:68) 435 camels, and 6,720 donkeys.

70Some of the family leaders contributed to the work. The governor contributed to the treasury 1,000 gold drachmas, 50 bowls, and 530 priestly garments.

71Some of the family leaders gave to the project treasury 20,000 gold drachmas and 2,200 silver minas.

72What the rest of the people gave amounted to 20,000 gold drachmas, 2,000 silver minas, and 67 priestly garments.

73The priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all the rest of Israel lived in their cities. When the seventh month arrived and the Israelites were settled in their towns,

1Now when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed,

2I put my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the governor of the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem; for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.

3I said to them, “Don’t let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut the doors, and you bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, everyone in his watch, with everyone near his house.”

4Now the city was wide and large; but the people were few therein, and the houses were not built.

5My God put into my heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be listed by genealogy. I found the book of the genealogy of those who came up at the first, and I found this written in it:

63Of the priests: the children of Hobaiah, the children of Hakkoz, the children of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name.

64These searched for their genealogical records, but couldn’t find them. Therefore were they deemed disqualified and removed from the priesthood.

65The governor told that they should not eat of the most holy things until a priest stood up to minister with Urim and Thummim.

66The whole assembly together was forty-two thousand three hundred sixty,

67besides their male servants and their female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty-seven; and they had two hundred forty-five singing men and singing women.

70Some from among the heads of fathers’ households gave to the work. The governor gave to the treasury one thousand darics of gold, fifty basins, and five hundred thirty priests’ garments.

Summary

With the wall complete, Nehemiah appoints gatekeepers and finds the genealogical registry of those who first returned from exile. The list mirrors Ezra 2, establishing the identity of the covenant community.

Authorship & Background

Author: Nehemiah, with possible editorial additions by Ezra. Written approximately 445-400 BC. Nehemiah covers the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls (445 BC) and the spiritual renewal of the community. Key themes: prayer and action together, opposition overcome by faith, the importance of God's Word (chapter 8), covenant renewal, and the principle that spiritual rebuilding must accompany physical rebuilding.
Historical Context: Chapter 7 records Nehemiah's post-construction administration. With the wall complete, he appointed gatekeepers, singers, and Levites (v.1), delegated governance to Hanani and Hananiah (v.2), established security protocols (v.3), and addressed the problem of underpopulation — "the city was large and great: but the people were few therein" (v.4). God then moved Nehemiah to take a census, and he discovered the register from Zerubbabel's original return (nearly paralleling Ezra 2). The chapter primarily consists of this census list (vv.6-73), preserving the community's genealogical identity. The list served a practical purpose: verifying who belonged to the covenant community and who had valid claims to property, priestly service, and civic participation. The transition from physical building (chapters 1-6) to community organization (chapter 7) and then spiritual renewal (chapter 8) shows Nehemiah's understanding that walls alone don't make a city — people, governance, worship, and identity are equally essential.

Map & Geography

  • Susa (Shushan) — the Persian winter capital in modern Iran, where Nehemiah serves as cupbearer to King Artaxerxes.
  • Jerusalem — the city whose walls Nehemiah rebuilds. Chapter 3 names specific gates (Sheep Gate, Fish Gate, Valley Gate, Dung Gate, etc.) tracing the wall circuit.
  • The surrounding enemies occupy identifiable regions: Sanballat (Samaria/north), Tobiah (Ammon/east), Geshem (Arabia/south).

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes that Nehemiah's leadership moved from crisis management to institution-building. The wall was a short-term project; governance, security, and community ordering were long-term necessities. He highlights v.2's leadership criteria as timeless: faithfulness and fear of God.
  • Charles Spurgeon: "Nehemiah appointed a man 'faithful and feared God above many.' These are the two essentials for every position of trust in God's house: proved faithfulness (you can depend on him) and genuine godliness (he fears God more than man). Many are faithful but lack piety; others are pious but unreliable. The rare and precious servant combines both — and such a one deserves the highest responsibility."

Reflection

  • 1. Character over competence in leadership selection (v.2). Nehemiah chose "faithful" and "feared God" — not "most talented" or "most connected." When selecting leaders, prioritize proven character and genuine godliness over impressive resumes.
  • 2. Ongoing vigilance follows completed projects (v.3). The wall was done, but gates still needed guarding daily. Finishing a project doesn't mean relaxing discipline. Maintain the systems that protect what you've built.
  • 3. God prompts administrative wisdom (v.5). "My God put into mine heart" — even practical decisions about organization and census can be divinely inspired. Seek God's guidance in mundane administrative matters, not only in obviously spiritual ones.
  • 4. Identity matters as much as infrastructure (vv.5-73). Before spiritual renewal (chapter 8), the community needed to know who they were. Knowing your spiritual genealogy — your heritage in the faith — grounds you for worship and service.
  • 5. Walls without people are meaningless (v.4). Don't invest all your energy in structures and neglect the people they serve. Buildings, programs, and organizations exist for community — never the reverse.
