Zephaniah — Chapter 2

1Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired;

2Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’S anger come upon you.

3Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger.

4For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: they shall drive out Ashdod at the noonday, and Ekron shall be rooted up.

5Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites! the word of the LORD is against you; O Canaan, the land of the Philistines, I will even destroy thee, that there shall be no inhabitant.

6And the sea coast shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks.

7And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah; they shall feed thereupon: in the houses of Ashkelon shall they lie down in the evening: for the LORD their God shall visit them, and turn away their captivity.

8I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border.

9Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them.

10This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts.

11The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.

12Ye Ethiopians also, ye shall be slain by my sword.

13And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness.

14And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds: for he shall uncover the cedar work.

15This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

1Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation that hath no shame;

2before the decree bring forth, [before] the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of Jehovah come upon you, before the day of Jehovah`s anger come upon you.

3Seek ye Jehovah, all ye meek of the earth, that have kept his ordinances; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye will be hid in the day of Jehovah`s anger.

4For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation; they shall drive out Ashdod at noonday, and Ekron shall be rooted up.

5Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea-coast, the nation of the Cherethites! The word of Jehovah is against you, O Canaan, the land of the Philistines; I will destroy thee, that there shall be no inhabitant.

6And the sea-coast shall be pastures, with cottages for shepherds and folds for flocks.

7And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah; they shall feed [their flocks] thereupon; in the houses of Ashkelon shall they lie down in the evening; for Jehovah their God will visit them, and bring back their captivity.

8I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of Ammon, wherewith they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border.

9Therefore as I live, saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, a possession of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall make a prey of them, and the remnant of my nation shall inherit them.

10This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of Jehovah of hosts.

11Jehovah will be terrible unto them; for he will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the nations.

12Ye Ethiopians also, ye shall be slain by my sword.

13And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria, and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like the wilderness.

14And herds shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the pelican and the porcupine shall lodge in the capitals thereof; [their] voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds: for he hath laid bare the cedar-work.

15This is the joyous city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none besides me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

1Bunch yourselves together like straw, you undesirable nation,

2before God’s decree becomes reality and the day of opportunity disappears like windblown chaff, before the Lord’s raging anger overtakes you— before the day of the Lord’s angry judgment overtakes you!

3Seek the Lord’s favor, all you humble people of the land who have obeyed his commands! Strive to do what is right! Strive to be humble! Maybe you will be protected on the day of the Lord’s angry judgment.

4Indeed, Gaza will be deserted and Ashkelon will become a heap of ruins. Invaders will drive away the people of Ashdod by noon, and Ekron will be overthrown.

5Beware, you who live by the sea, the people who came from Crete. The Lord’s message is against you, Canaan, land of the Philistines: “I will destroy everyone who lives there!”

6The seacoast will be used as pasture lands by the shepherds and as pens for their flocks.

7Those who are left from the kingdom of Judah will take possession of it. By the sea they will graze, in the houses of Ashkelon they will lie down in the evening, for the Lord their God will intervene for them and restore their prosperity.

8“I have heard Moab’s taunts and the Ammonites’ insults. They taunted my people and verbally harassed those living in Judah.

9Therefore, as surely as I live,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, “be certain that Moab will become like Sodom and the Ammonites like Gomorrah. They will be overrun by weeds, filled with salt pits, and permanently desolate. Those of my people who are left will plunder their belongings; those who are left in Judah will take possession of their land.”

10This is how they will be repaid for their arrogance, for they taunted and verbally harassed the people of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

11The Lord will terrify them, for he will weaken all the gods of the earth. All the distant nations will worship the Lord in their own lands.

12“You Ethiopians will also die by my sword!”

13The Lord will attack the north and destroy Assyria. He will make Nineveh a heap of ruins; it will be as barren as the desert.

14Flocks and herds will lie down in the middle of it, as well as every kind of wild animal. Owls will sleep in the tops of its support pillars; they will hoot through the windows. Rubble will cover the thresholds; even the cedar work will be exposed to the elements.

15This is how the once-proud city will end up— the city that was so secure. She thought to herself, “I am unique! No one can compare to me!” What a heap of ruins she has become, a place where wild animals live! Everyone who passes by her taunts her and shakes his fist.

1Gather yourselves together, yes, gather together, you nation that has no shame,

2before the appointed time when the day passes as the chaff, before the fierce anger of Yahweh comes on you, before the day of Yahweh’s anger comes on you.

3Seek Yahweh, all you humble of the land, who have kept his ordinances. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of Yahweh’s anger.

4For Gaza will be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation. They will drive out Ashdod at noonday, and Ekron will be rooted up.

5Woe to the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites! Yahweh’s word is against you, Canaan, the land of the Philistines. I will destroy you, that there will be no inhabitant.

6The sea coast will be pastures, with cottages for shepherds and folds for flocks.

7The coast will be for the remnant of the house of Judah. They will find pasture. In the houses of Ashkelon, they will lie down in the evening, for Yahweh, their God, will visit them, and restore them.

8I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the insults of the children of Ammon, with which they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border.

9Therefore as I live, says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, surely Moab will be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, a possession of nettles, and salt pits, and a perpetual desolation. The remnant of my people will plunder them, and the survivors of my nation will inherit them.

10This they will have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of Yahweh of Armies.

11Yahweh will be awesome to them, for he will famish all the gods of the land. Men will worship him, everyone from his place, even all the shores of the nations.

12You Cushites also, you will be killed by my sword.

13He will stretch out his hand against the north, destroy Assyria, and will make Nineveh a desolation, as dry as the wilderness.

14Herds will lie down in the middle of her, all the animals of the nations. Both the pelican and the porcupine will lodge in its capitals. Their calls will echo through the windows. Desolation will be in the thresholds, for he has laid bare the cedar beams.

15This is the joyous city that lived carelessly, that said in her heart, “I am, and there is no one besides me.” How she has become a desolation, a place for animals to lie down in! Everyone who passes by her will hiss, and shake their fists.

Summary

Zephaniah calls the humble to seek the LORD before the day of wrath, then pronounces judgment on surrounding nations — Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Cush, and Assyria — leaving Nineveh a desolation.

Authorship & Background

Author: Zephaniah, great-great-grandson of King Hezekiah. Prophesied approximately 640-625 BC during Josiah's early reign. Key theme: the Day of the LORD as universal judgment ('I will utterly consume all things') followed by restoration. 'The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy' (3:17).
Classification: Prophetic Oracle — Judgment on the Nations and the Call to Seek the LORD Key Themes: The urgency of repentance before judgment, oracles against surrounding nations (Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Cush, Assyria), the fate of those who mock God's people, Nineveh's arrogance exposed
Historical Context: After the terrifying description of the Day of the LORD in chapter 1, chapter 2 opens with a call to repentance (vv.1-3) before turning to judgments on the nations surrounding Judah. The structure moves geographically: west (Philistia, vv.4-7), east (Moab and Ammon, vv.8-11), south (Cush/Ethiopia, v.12), and north (Assyria/Nineveh, vv.13-15).
This pattern — judgment on Judah first (ch.1), then judgment on the nations (ch.2), then restoration (ch.3) — mirrors the structure of other prophetic books (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel). The message is clear: God judges His own people for their sin, but He also judges the nations who abused, mocked, and exploited His people.
The chapter's call to "seek the LORD" (v.3) provides a narrow window of hope between the declaration of judgment and its execution. The word "perhaps" (v.3) is startling — there is no guarantee of escape, only the possibility. This creates urgency without presumption. The prophecy against Nineveh (vv.13-15) is particularly notable alongside Nahum — confirming from a second prophetic witness that Assyria's fall is certain.
Structure:
  • Call to Repentance Before the Day (vv.1-3)
  • Oracle Against Philistia: The West (vv.4-7)
  • Oracle Against Moab and Ammon: The East (vv.8-11)
  • Oracle Against Cush: The South (v.12)
  • Oracle Against Assyria/Nineveh: The North (vv.13-15)

Map & Geography

  • Moab (v.8, v.9): Land east of the Dead Sea; often in conflict with Israel.
  • Sodom (v.9): City destroyed by God for its wickedness (Genesis 19).
  • Gomorrah (v.9): City destroyed alongside Sodom.
  • Assyria (v.13): Empire to the northeast that conquered the northern kingdom of Israel (722 BC).
  • Nineveh (v.13): Capital of the Assyrian Empire; subject of Jonah and Nahum.

Reflection

  • 1. "Seek the LORD... PERHAPS you may be hidden" (v.3). There is no guarantee of escape — only the invitation to seek. Don't presume upon grace. The "perhaps" should produce not paralysis but URGENCY. Seek now, seek earnestly, seek while the door is open. The decree has not yet taken effect (v.2).
  • 2. Even the faithful must seek more (v.3). The call goes to those who already "do his just commands" — they are already obedient. Yet even THEY must seek righteousness and humility more deeply. Spiritual complacency threatens the faithful too. There is always more of God to pursue.
  • 3. Mocking God's people invites divine retaliation (vv.8-10). Moab and Ammon "reproached my people" — they mocked, taunted, and gloated over Judah's suffering. God takes it personally: "MY people." Those who mock the suffering of God's children will face the God who calls them His own.
  • 4. Self-deification is the ultimate arrogance (v.15). Nineveh's "I am, and there is none beside me" is the sin of claiming God's unique position. Whenever you place yourself at the center of your universe — as though no one else matters, as though you are self-sufficient — you echo Nineveh's fatal pride.
  • 5. God restores what enemies destroy (v.7). The Philistine coast will become pasture for Judah's remnant. What was lost will be returned. God's people may lose territory for a season, but God keeps accounts and repays.
