Hebrews — Chapter 13

1Let brotherly love continue.

2Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

3Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

4Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

5Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

6So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

7Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.

8Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

9Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.

10We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle.

11For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp.

12Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

13Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.

14For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

15By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

16But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

17Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

18Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly.

19But I beseech you the rather to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner.

20Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

21Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

22And I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation: for I have written a letter unto you in few words.

23Know ye that our brother Timothy is set at liberty; with whom, if he come shortly, I will see you.

24Salute all them that have the rule over you, and all the saints. They of Italy salute you.

25Grace be with you all. Amen.

1Let love of the brethren continue.

2Forget not to show love unto strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

3Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; them that are illtreated, as being yourselves also in the body.

4[Let] marriage [be] had in honor among all, and [let] the bed [be] undefiled: for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

5Be ye free from the love of money; content with such things as ye have: for himself hath said, I will in no wise fail thee, neither will I in any wise forsake thee.

6So that with good courage we say, The Lord is my helper; I will not fear: What shall man do unto me?

7Remember them that had the rule over you, men that spake unto you the word of God; and considering the issue of their life, imitate their faith.

8Jesus Christ [is] the same yesterday and to-day, [yea] and for ever.

9Be not carried away by divers and strange teachings: for it is good that the heart be established by grace; not by meats, wherein they that occupied themselves were not profited.

10We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat that serve the tabernacle.

11For the bodies of those beasts whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest [as an offering] for sin, are burned without the camp.

12Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people through his own blood, suffered without the gate.

13Let us therefore go forth unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.

14For we have not here an abiding city, but we seek after [the city] which is to come.

15Through him then let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which make confession to his name.

16But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

17Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit [to them]: for they watch in behalf of your souls, as they that shall give account; that they may do this with joy, and not with grief: for this [were] unprofitable for you.

18Pray for us: for we are persuaded that we have a good conscience, desiring to live honorably in all things.

19And I exhort [you] the more exceedingly to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner.

20Now the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep with the blood of an eternal covenant, [even] our Lord Jesus,

21make you perfect in every good thing to do his will, working in us that which is well-pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom [be] the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

22But I exhort you, brethren, bear with the word of exhortation, for I have written unto you in few words.

23Know ye that our brother Timothy hath been set at liberty; with whom, if he come shortly, I will see you.

24Salute all them that have the rule over you, and all the saints. They of Italy salute you.

25Grace be with you all. Amen.

1Brotherly love must continue.

2Do not neglect hospitality because through it some have entertained angels without knowing it.

3Remember those in prison as though you were in prison with them, and those ill-treated as though you, too, felt their torment.

4Marriage must be honored among all and the marriage bed kept undefiled, for God will judge sexually immoral people and adulterers.

5Your conduct must be free from the love of money, and you must be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you and I will never abandon you.”

6So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, and I will not be afraid. What can people do to me?”

7Remember your leaders, who spoke God’s message to you; reflect on the outcome of their lives and imitate their faith.

8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever!

9Do not be carried away by all sorts of strange teachings. For it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not ritual meals, which have never benefited those who participated in them.

10We have an altar that those who serve in the tabernacle have no right to eat from.

11For the bodies of those animals whose blood the high priest brings into the sanctuary as an offering for sin are burned outside the camp.

12Therefore, to sanctify the people by his own blood, Jesus also suffered outside the camp.

13We must go out to him, then, outside the camp, bearing the abuse he experienced.

14For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.

15Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, acknowledging his name.

16And do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.

17Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls and will give an account for their work. Let them do this with joy and not with complaints, for this would be no advantage for you.

18Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to conduct ourselves rightly in every respect.

19I especially ask you to pray that I may be restored to you very soon.

20Now may the God of peace who by the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep, our Lord Jesus,

21equip you with every good thing to do his will, working in us what is pleasing before him through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever. Amen.

22Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, bear with my message of exhortation, for in fact I have written to you briefly.

23You should know that our brother Timothy has been released. If he comes soon, he will be with me when I see you.

24Greetings to all your leaders and all the saints. Those from Italy send you greetings.

25Grace be with you all.

1Let brotherly love continue.

2Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it.

3Remember those who are in bonds, as bound with them; and those who are ill-treated, since you are also in the body.

4Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled: but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.

5Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.”

6So that with good courage we say, “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

7Remember your leaders, men who spoke to you the word of God, and considering the results of their conduct, imitate their faith.

8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

9Don’t be carried away by various and strange teachings, for it is good that the heart be established by grace, not by food, through which those who were so occupied were not benefited.

10We have an altar from which those who serve the holy tabernacle have no right to eat.

11For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside of the camp.

12Therefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people through his own blood, suffered outside of the gate.

13Let us therefore go out to him outside of the camp, bearing his reproach.

14For we don’t have here an enduring city, but we seek that which is to come.

15Through him, then, let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which proclaim allegiance to his name.

16But don’t forget to be doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

17Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

18Pray for us, for we are persuaded that we have a good conscience, desiring to live honorably in all things.

19I strongly urge you to do this, that I may be restored to you sooner.

20Now may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep with the blood of an eternal covenant, our Lord Jesus,

21make you complete in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

22But I exhort you, brothers, endure the word of exhortation; for I have written to you in few words.

23Know that our brother Timothy has been freed, with whom, if he comes shortly, I will see you.

24Greet all of your leaders and all the saints. The Italians greet you.

25Grace be with you all. Amen.

Summary

Final exhortations: let brotherly love continue, honor marriage, be content (for "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee"), obey your leaders, and go forth to Jesus outside the camp bearing His reproach — "for here have we no continuing city."

Authorship & Background

Author: Unknown (see Chapter 1 notes for full discussion). The mention of Timothy (v.23) and the Italian connection (v.24) suggest Pauline circles.
Historical Context: Chapter 13 concludes Hebrews with practical instructions for Christian living (vv.1-6), instructions about leaders and doctrine (vv.7- 9), the call to go "outside the camp" with Jesus (vv.10-14), sacrifices that please God (vv.15-16), submission to leaders (v.17), and a magnificent benediction (vv.20-21). After 12 chapters of deep theology, chapter 13 shows what it looks like in daily life.
Practical Instructions (vv.1-6): Brotherly love (v.1). Hospitality (v.2). Remember prisoners (v.3). Honor marriage (v.4). Be free from covetousness; be content (v.5). God's promise: "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (v.5). Therefore: "The Lord is my helper" (v.6).
Leaders and Doctrine (vv.7-9): Remember faithful leaders; imitate their faith (v.7). "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever" (v.8). Don't be carried away by strange doctrines (v.9).
Outside the Camp (vv.10-14): Jesus suffered "without the gate" — outside the city, outside the religious system (v.12). We must go to Him "without the camp, bearing his reproach" (v.13). We have no permanent city here — we seek the one to come (v.14).
Sacrifices That Please God (vv.15-17): Praise — "the fruit of our lips" (v.15). Doing good and sharing (v.16). Obeying leaders who watch for your souls (v.17).
The Benediction (vv.20-21): "The God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will."

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik covers the practical instructions, Christ's unchanging nature, going outside the camp, and the great benediction.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "Jesus Christ, the Same" on v.8 (MTP Vol. 15, No. 901) "The same YESTERDAY — in eternity past, in creation, in the OT, in His earthly life. The same TODAY — right now, in your current trial, in this present moment. The same FOR EVER — in the future, in eternity, world without end. He does not change. His love does not cool. His power does not diminish. His promises do not expire. Whatever He was to Abraham, to David, to Paul — He is to you. The same. Always." Sermon: "I Will Never Leave Thee" on v.5 (MTP Vol. 34, No. 2041) "Five negatives in the Greek: 'I will not, not leave thee; I will not, not, not forsake thee.' God piles up negatives to make the promise unbreakable. He will NEVER leave. He will NEVER forsake. Not in sickness, not in poverty, not in failure, not in death. Never. This is the foundation of contentment: not having everything but having Him who is everything."

Reflection

  • 1. "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (v.5). This is God's promise to you — with five negatives for emphasis. Do you believe it? In your loneliest, darkest moment — He is there. He will never leave.
  • 2. "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever" (v.8). In a world of constant change, Christ is unchanging. His love for you today is the same as it was at the cross. Does this stability anchor you?
  • 3. "Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp" (v.13). Following Jesus may mean leaving religious respectability, social acceptance, or comfortable systems behind. Are you willing to be "outside" with Him?
  • 4. "Here have we no continuing city" (v.14). This world is not your home. Are you living like a pilgrim or like a permanent resident? How does pilgrim identity change your priorities?
  • 5. "The sacrifice of praise" (v.15). Under the new covenant, your sacrifice is praise, good works, and generosity (vv.15-16). Are you offering these sacrifices continually?
  • 6. The benediction (vv.20-21): God is working IN you to do His will. It's not just your effort — it's God working through you. How does this relieve pressure while maintaining responsibility?
