Hebrews — Chapter 3

1Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

2Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.

3For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.

4For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.

5And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;

6But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

7Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

8Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

9When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.

10Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.

11So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)

12Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

13But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

14For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

15While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

16For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.

17But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?

18And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?

19So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

1Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, [even] Jesus;

2who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also was Moses in all his house.

3For he hath been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by so much as he that built the house hath more honor than the house.

4For every house is builded by some one; but he that built all things is God.

5And Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were afterward to be spoken;

6but Christ as a son, over his house; whose house are we, if we hold fast our boldness and the glorying of our hope firm unto the end.

7Wherefore, even as the Holy Spirit saith, To-day if ye shall hear his voice,

8Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, Like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness,

9Where your fathers tried [me] by proving [me,] And saw my works forty years.

10Wherefore I was displeased with this generation, And said, They do always err in their heart: But they did not know my ways;

11As I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.

12Take heed, brethren, lest haply there shall be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God:

13but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called To-day; lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin:

14for we are become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm unto the end:

15while it is said, To-day if ye shall hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

16For who, when they heard, did provoke? nay, did not all they that came out of Egypt by Moses?

17And with whom was he displeased forty years? was it not with them that sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

18And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that were disobedient?

19And we see that they were not able to enter in because of unbelief.

1Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, partners in a heavenly calling, take note of Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess,

2who is faithful to the one who appointed him, as Moses was also in God’s house.

3For he has come to deserve greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house deserves greater honor than the house itself!

4For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.

5Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that would be spoken.

6But Christ is faithful as a son over God’s house. We are of his house, if in fact we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope we take pride in.

7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks!

8Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness.

9There your fathers tested me and tried me, and they saw my works for forty years.

10Therefore, I became provoked at that generation and said, ‘Their hearts are always wandering, and they have not known my ways.’

11As I swore in my anger, ‘They will never enter my rest!’”

12See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has an evil, unbelieving heart that forsakes the living God.

13But exhort one another each day, as long as it is called “Today,” that none of you may become hardened by sin’s deception.

14For we have become partners with Christ, if in fact we hold our initial confidence firm until the end.

15As it says, “Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks! Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

16For which ones heard and rebelled? Was it not all who came out of Egypt under Moses’ leadership?

17And against whom was God provoked for forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness?

18And to whom did he swear they would never enter into his rest, except those who were disobedient?

19So we see that they could not enter because of unbelief.

1Therefore, holy brothers, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Jesus;

2who was faithful to him who appointed him, as also was Moses in all his house.

3For he has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, because he who built the house has more honor than the house.

4For every house is built by someone; but he who built all things is God.

5Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were afterward to be spoken,

6but Christ is faithful as a Son over his house; whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the glorying of our hope firm to the end.

7Therefore, even as the Holy Spirit says, “Today if you will hear his voice,

8don’t harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness,

9where your fathers tested me by proving me, and saw my deeds for forty years.

10Therefore I was displeased with that generation, and said, ‘They always err in their heart, but they didn’t know my ways;’

11as I swore in my wrath, ‘They will not enter into my rest.’”

12Beware, brothers, lest perhaps there be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God;

13but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called “today”; lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

14For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm to the end:

15while it is said, “Today if you will hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts, as in the rebellion.”

16For who, when they heard, rebelled? No, didn’t all those who came out of Egypt by Moses?

17With whom was he displeased forty years? Wasn’t it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

18To whom did he swear that they wouldn’t enter into his rest, but to those who were disobedient?

19We see that they were not able to enter in because of unbelief.

Summary

Jesus is greater than Moses as a son over His own house, and the wilderness generation's unbelief serves as a warning — "Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts" — lest any fall short through an evil heart of unbelief.

Authorship & Background

Author: Unknown (see Chapter 1 notes for full discussion).
Historical Context: Chapter 3 demonstrates Christ's superiority over Moses (vv.1-6), then issues the second major warning: don't harden your hearts like Israel in the wilderness (vv.7-19). Moses was the greatest figure in Judaism — lawgiver, deliverer, mediator. If Christ is greater than Moses, then His message demands even greater faithfulness. The wilderness generation serves as a warning: they heard God's voice but hardened their hearts and never entered the Promised Land.
Christ Greater Than Moses (vv.1-6): Both were faithful (v.2). But Moses was faithful as a servant IN God's house; Christ is faithful as a Son OVER God's house (vv.5-6). The builder is greater than the building (v.3). "Whose house are we" — believers are God's house (v.6).
Warning #2: Don't Harden Your Hearts (vv.7-19): Quoting Psalm 95:7-11, the author warns against repeating Israel's wilderness failure. They heard God's voice but hardened their hearts (v.8). They tested God for 40 years (v.9). God swore they would not enter His rest (v.11). Application: "Take heed... lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief" (v.12). "Exhort one another daily" (v.13). The wilderness generation failed because of unbelief (v.19).

  • Egypt (v.16): Land to the southwest; place of Israel's bondage and exodus.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik covers Christ's superiority to Moses, the wilderness warning, the danger of unbelief, and the importance of daily encouragement.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "Today" on v.7 (MTP Vol. 9, No. 530) "TODAY — not tomorrow, not next week, not when you're older, not on your deathbed — today. If ye will hear His voice — He is speaking NOW. Harden not your hearts — the hardening happens gradually, imperceptibly. Every time you hear and don't respond, your heart gets a little harder. Today is the day of opportunity. Tomorrow may be the day of hardness." Sermon: "The Deceitfulness of Sin" on v.13 (MTP Vol. 11, No. 627) "The deceitfulness of sin — sin never tells you the truth. It promises pleasure and delivers pain. It promises freedom and delivers bondage. It promises life and delivers death. And it hardens — slowly, gradually, imperceptibly. That is why we need daily exhortation — because sin deceives daily. You cannot fight deception alone. You need brothers who will speak truth to you every day."

Reflection

  • 1. "Consider... Christ Jesus" (v.1). The word "consider" means to fix your mind on, to think carefully about. Are you giving Christ careful, sustained attention? Or is He an afterthought?
  • 2. "To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts" (v.7-8). Is God speaking to you about something right now? Are you responding today, or putting it off? Every delay hardens the heart a little more.
  • 3. "Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief" (v.12). Unbelief is the root of all departure from God. Where are you struggling to believe? What promises of God are you doubting?
  • 4. "Exhort one another daily" (v.13). Do you have people in your life who speak truth to you daily? Are you in community that protects you from sin's deception? If not, you're vulnerable.
  • 5. "They could not enter in because of unbelief" (v.19). The wilderness generation had every advantage — miracles, God's presence, Moses's leadership — but unbelief kept them out. What "promised land" is unbelief keeping you from entering?
