1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
2Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.
3Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
4Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
12For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
13For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
14For the body is not one member, but many.
15If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
16And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
17If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?
18But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.
19And if they were all one member, where were the body?
20But now are they many members, yet but one body.
21And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.
22Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:
23And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.
24For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:
25That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.
26And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.
27Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
28And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
29Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
30Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
31But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
1Now concerning spiritual [gifts], brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
2Ye know that when ye were Gentiles [ye were] led away unto those dumb idols, howsoever ye might led.
3Wherefore I make known unto you, that no man speaking in the Spirit of God saith, Jesus is anathema; and no man can say, Jesus is Lord, but in the Holy Spirit.
4Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5And there are diversities of ministrations, and the same Lord.
6And there are diversities of workings, but the same God, who worketh all things in all.
7But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit to profit withal.
8For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom; and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit:
9to another faith, in the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, in the one Spirit;
10and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discernings of spirits; to another [divers] kinds of tongues; and to another the interpretation of tongues:
11but all these worketh the one and the same Spirit, dividing to each one severally even as he will.
12For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.
13For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit.
14For the body is not one member, but many.
15If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body.
16And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body.
17If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?
18But now hath God set the members each one of them in the body, even as it pleased him.
19And if they were all one member, where were the body?
20But now they are many members, but one body.
21And the eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of thee: or again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.
22Nay, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary:
23and those [parts] of the body, which we think to be less honorable, upon these we bestow more abundant honor; and our uncomely [parts] have more abundant comeliness;
24whereas our comely [parts] have no need: but God tempered the body together, giving more abundant honor to that [part] which lacked;
25that there should be no schism in the body; but [that] the members should have the same care one for another.
26And whether one member suffereth, all the members suffer with it; or [one] member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
27Now ye are the body of Christ, and severally members thereof.
28And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, [divers] kinds of tongues.
29Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all [workers of] miracles?
30have all gifts of healings? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
31But desire earnestly the greater gifts. And moreover a most excellent way show I unto you.
1With regard to spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
2You know that when you were pagans you were often led astray by speechless idols, however you were led.
3So I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
4Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit.
5And there are different ministries, but the same Lord.
6And there are different results, but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.
7To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the benefit of all.
8For one person is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, and another the message of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
9to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
10to another performance of miracles, to another prophecy, and to another discernment of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
11It is one and the same Spirit, distributing as he decides to each person, who produces all these things.
12For just as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body—though many—are one body, so too is Christ.
13For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Whether Jews or Greeks or slaves or free, we were all made to drink of the one Spirit.
14For in fact the body is not a single member, but many.
15If the foot says, “Since I am not a hand, I am not part of the body,” it does not lose its membership in the body because of that.
16And if the ear says, “Since I am not an eye, I am not part of the body,” it does not lose its membership in the body because of that.
17If the whole body were an eye, what part would do the hearing? If the whole were an ear, what part would exercise the sense of smell?
18But as a matter of fact, God has placed each of the members in the body just as he decided.
19If they were all the same member, where would the body be?
20So now there are many members, but one body.
21The eye cannot say to the hand, “I do not need you,” nor in turn can the head say to the foot, “I do not need you.”
22On the contrary, those members that seem to be weaker are essential,
23and those members we consider less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our unpresentable members are clothed with dignity,
24but our presentable members do not need this. Instead, God has blended together the body, giving greater honor to the lesser member,
25so that there may be no division in the body, but the members may have mutual concern for one another.
26If one member suffers, everyone suffers with it. If a member is honored, all rejoice with it.
27Now you are Christ’s body, and each of you is a member of it.
28And God has placed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, gifts of healing, helps, gifts of leadership, different kinds of tongues.
29Not all are apostles, are they? Not all are prophets, are they? Not all are teachers, are they? Not all perform miracles, do they?
30Not all have gifts of healing, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all interpret, do they?
31But you should be eager for the greater gifts.And now I will show you a way that is beyond comparison.
1Now concerning spiritual things, brothers, I don’t want you to be ignorant.
2You know that when you were heathen, you were led away to those mute idols, however you might be led.
3Therefore I make known to you that no man speaking by God’s Spirit says, “Jesus is accursed.” No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” but by the Holy Spirit.
4Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5There are various kinds of service, and the same Lord.
6There are various kinds of workings, but the same God, who works all things in all.
7But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all.
8For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit;
9to another faith, by the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, by the same Spirit;
10and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discerning of spirits; to another different kinds of languages; and to another the interpretation of languages.
11But the one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing to each one separately as he desires.
12For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.
13For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all given to drink into one Spirit.
14For the body is not one member, but many.
15If the foot would say, “Because I’m not the hand, I’m not part of the body,” it is not therefore not part of the body.
16If the ear would say, “Because I’m not the eye, I’m not part of the body,” it’s not therefore not part of the body.
17If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the smelling be?
18But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired.
19If they were all one member, where would the body be?
20But now they are many members, but one body.
21The eye can’t tell the hand, “I have no need for you,” or again the head to the feet, “I have no need for you.”
22No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary.
23Those parts of the body which we think to be less honorable, on those we bestow more abundant honor; and our unpresentable parts have more abundant propriety;
24whereas our presentable parts have no such need. But God composed the body together, giving more abundant honor to the inferior part,
25that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.
26When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. Or when one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
27Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.
28God has set some in the assembly: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracle workers, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, and various kinds of languages.
29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all miracle workers?
30Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with various languages? Do all interpret?
31But earnestly desire the best gifts. Moreover, I show a most excellent way to you.
Summary
Paul teaches that the Spirit distributes diverse gifts to each believer for the common good, using the metaphor of the body — every member is necessary, the eye cannot say to the hand "I have no need of you," and God arranges each part as He wills.

- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Body of Christ" on vv.12-27 (MTP Vol. 10, No. 654) "The body is one, and hath many members — that is the church. Not a collection of identical parts but a diverse body with different functions. The eye needs the hand. The head needs the feet. You need the people you think you don't need. And they need you." Sermon: "Every Man His Gift" on v.7 (MTP Vol. 22, No. 1387) "The manifestation of the Spirit is given to EVERY man — not some, not the elite, not the leaders only — every man. Reflection
- 1. "The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man" (v.7). If you are in Christ, you have a spiritual gift. Do you know what it is? Are you using it for the common good?
- 2. "God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him" (v.18). Your place in the body is God's choice — not an accident. Are you content with your role, or are you envying someone else's?
- 3. "The eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee" (v.21). You need other believers — especially those who are different from you. Who in the body do you think you don't need? You're wrong.
- 4. "Whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it" (v.26). The body is interconnected. When a brother suffers, you suffer. When a sister is honored, you rejoice. How connected are you to the body? Do you feel others' pain and celebrate others' victories?
- 5. The Corinthians elevated tongues above other gifts. What gifts does your church culture elevate? What gifts are undervalued? How does Paul's teaching correct this?
- 6. "All these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will" (v.11). You didn't choose your gift — the Spirit did. How does this truth prevent both pride (in having a "better" gift) and envy (wanting someone else's)?
- 7. The "less honourable" parts receive "more abundant honour" (v.23). God gives extra honor to the less visible members. How does your church honor the behind-the-scenes servants — the ones no one sees?
- 8. "Are all apostles? are all prophets?" (v.29). The answer is no — diversity is the design. How do you celebrate diversity of gifts rather than demanding uniformity?
- 9. Paul points to "a more excellent way" (v.31) — love. Gifts without love are nothing (13:1-3). How is love motivating your use of your gifts? Are you serving for love or for recognition?
