1O Israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.

2Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips.

3Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.

4I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.

5I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.

6His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon.

7They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.

8Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found.

9Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.

1O Israel, return unto Jehovah thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.

2Take with you words, and return unto Jehovah: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and accept that which is good: so will we render [as] bullocks [the offering of] our lips.

3Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses; neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, [Ye are] our gods; for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.

4I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely; for mine anger is turned away from him.

5I will be as the dew unto Israel; he shall blossom as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.

6His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive-tree, and his smell as Lebanon.

7They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive [as] the grain, and blossom as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.

8Ephraim [shall say], What have I to do any more with idols? I have answered, and will regard him: I am like a green fir-tree; from me is thy fruit found.

9Who is wise, that he may understand these things? prudent, that he may know them? for the ways of Jehovah are right, and the just shall walk in them; but transgressors shall fall therein.

1Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for your sin has been your downfall!

2Return to the Lord and repent! Say to him: “Completely forgive our iniquity; accept our penitential prayer, that we may offer the praise of our lips as sacrificial bulls.

3Assyria cannot save us; we will not ride warhorses. We will never again say, ‘Our gods,’ to what our own hands have made. For only you will show compassion to Orphan Israel!”

4“I will heal their waywardness and love them freely, for my anger will turn away from them.

5I will be like the dew to Israel; he will blossom like a lily; he will send down his roots like a cedar of Lebanon.

6His young shoots will grow; his splendor will be like an olive tree; his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon.

7People will reside again in his shade; they will plant and harvest grain in abundance. They will blossom like a vine, and his fame will be like the wine from Lebanon.

8O Ephraim, I do not want to have anything to do with idols anymore! I will answer him and care for him. I am like a luxuriant cypress tree; your fruitfulness comes from me!”

9Who is wise? Let him discern these things! Who is discerning? Let him understand them! For the ways of the Lord are right; the godly walk in them, but in them the rebellious stumble.

1Israel, return to Yahweh your God; for you have fallen because of your sin.

2Take words with you, and return to Yahweh. Tell him, “Forgive all our sins, and accept that which is good: so we offer our lips like bulls.

3Assyria can’t save us. We won’t ride on horses; neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, ‘Our gods!’ for in you the fatherless finds mercy.”

4“I will heal their waywardness. I will love them freely; for my anger is turned away from him.

5I will be like the dew to Israel. He will blossom like the lily, and send down his roots like Lebanon.

6His branches will spread, and his beauty will be like the olive tree, and his fragrance like Lebanon.

7Men will dwell in his shade. They will revive like the grain, and blossom like the vine. Their fragrance will be like the wine of Lebanon.

8Ephraim, what have I to do any more with idols? I answer, and will take care of him. I am like a green cypress tree; from me your fruit is found.”

9Who is wise, that he may understand these things? Who is prudent, that he may know them? For the ways of Yahweh are right, and the righteous walk in them; But the rebellious stumble in them.

Summary

The book closes with a call to return to God with words of repentance, and God promises to heal their backsliding, love them freely, and make them flourish like a well-watered garden.

Authorship & Background

Author: Hosea son of Beeri. Prophesied to the northern kingdom (Israel) approximately 755-715 BC. Contemporary with Isaiah and Micah. Key theme: God's unfailing love for unfaithful Israel, illustrated through Hosea's marriage to Gomer (a prostitute). Despite Israel's spiritual adultery, God says: "I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely" (14:4).
Classification: Prophetic Oracle — The Final Invitation: Return and Flourish Key Themes: The call to return, words of repentance, God's free love, healing of backsliding, Israel as a flourishing tree, the wisdom of walking in God's ways
Historical Context: Chapter 14 is the CONCLUSION and CLIMAX of Hosea — the book that began with heartbreak ends with healing. After 13 chapters of accusation, judgment, lament, and fleeting hope, God gives the final invitation: RETURN. He even provides the WORDS of repentance for them (v.2-3). Then He makes seven "I will" promises of restoration (vv.4-8). The imagery shifts from barrenness to lush growth: lily, Lebanon cedar, olive tree, grain, vine. The fatherless find mercy; the backslidden find healing; the rebellious find free love. The book ends with a wisdom saying (v.9): the wise will understand these things.
Structure:
  • The Final Call: Return to the LORD (vv.1-3)
  • God's Seven "I Will" Promises (vv.4-8)
  • The Wisdom Conclusion (v.9)

Map & Geography

  • Lebanon (v.5, v.6, v.7): Region north of Israel known for its cedar forests.

Reflection

  • 1. "Return" (v.1). After everything — all the chapters of sin, rebellion, judgment, exile — the final word is an INVITATION. God never closes the door permanently. No matter how far you've fallen, the path home is always: return. Start walking.
  • 2. God provides the words of repentance (v.2). If you don't know what to pray, use v.2-3: "Take away all iniquity, receive us graciously." God doesn't demand eloquence — He provides the script. Just COME.
  • 3. "I will love them FREELY" (v.4). This is the gospel. Not earned. Not deserved. Not conditional on performance. FREE. Voluntary. Spontaneous from God's own heart. You cannot make God love you more, and you cannot make Him love you less. His love flows freely.
  • 4. "I will HEAL their backsliding" (v.4). Not just forgive it — HEAL it. The tendency to drift, the pattern of returning to sin, the chronic spiritual failure — God doesn't just pardon the symptoms. He cures the disease. Ask Him to heal the ROOT of your backsliding, not just its fruit.
  • 5. "From me is thy fruit found" (v.8). The ultimate lesson of Hosea: all fruitfulness comes from God. Not from your effort, your discipline, your programs. Abide in HIM and fruit comes naturally (John 15:4-5). Stop striving to produce and start abiding in the Vine.
  • 6. "The ways of the LORD are right" (v.9). Whether you walk in them or stumble over them, they are RIGHT regardless. Your response doesn't change the truth — it only changes YOUR outcome. Be wise: walk. Don't be a transgressor: stumble.
