Hosea — Chapter 7
Loading ESV text...
1When I would have healed Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria: for they commit falsehood; and the thief cometh in, and the troop of robbers spoileth without.
2And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have beset them about; they are before my face.
3They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies.
4They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceaseth from raising after he hath kneaded the dough, until it be leavened.
5In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners.
6For they have made ready their heart like an oven, whiles they lie in wait: their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth as a flaming fire.
7They are all hot as an oven, and have devoured their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me.
8Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned.
9Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not.
10And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this.
11Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria.
12When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard.
13Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them! because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me.
14And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me.
15Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me.
16They return, but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.
1When I would heal Israel, then is the iniquity of Ephraim uncovered, and the wickedness of Samaria; for they commit falsehood, and the thief entereth in, and the troop of robbers ravageth without.
2And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now have their own doings beset them about; they are before my face.
3They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies.
4They are all adulterers; they are as an oven heated by the baker; he ceaseth to stir [the fire], from the kneading of the dough, until it be leavened.
5On the day of our king the princes made themselves sick with the heat of wine; he stretched out his hand with scoffers.
6For they have made ready their heart like an oven, while they lie in wait: their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth as a flaming fire.
7They are all hot as an oven, and devour their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me.
8Ephraim, he mixeth himself among the peoples; Ephraim is a cake not turned.
9Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth [it] not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, and he knoweth [it] not.
10And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face: yet they have not returned unto Jehovah their God, nor sought him, for all this.
11And Ephraim is like a silly dove, without understanding: they call unto Egypt, they go to Assyria.
12When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the birds of the heavens; I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard.
13Woe unto them! for they have wandered from me; destruction unto them! for they have trespassed against me: though I would redeem them, yet they have spoken lies against me.
14And they have not cried unto me with their heart, but they howl upon their beds: they assemble themselves for grain and new wine; they rebel against me.
15Though I have taught and strengthened their arms, yet do they devise mischief against me.
16They return, but not to [him that is] on high; they are like a deceitful bow; their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.
1whenever I want to heal Israel, the sin of Ephraim is revealed, and the evil deeds of Samaria are exposed. For they do what is wrong; thieves break into houses, and gangs rob people out in the streets.
2They do not realize that I remember all their wicked deeds. Their evil deeds have now surrounded them; their sinful deeds are always before me.
3The royal advisers delight the king with their evil schemes; the princes make him glad with their lies.
4They are all like bakers; they are like a smoldering oven; they are like a baker who does not stoke the fire until the kneaded dough is ready for baking.
5At the celebration of their king, his princes become inflamed with wine; they conspire with evildoers.
6They approach him, all the while plotting against him. Their hearts are like an oven; their anger smolders all night long, but in the morning it bursts into a flaming fire.
7All of them are blazing like an oven; they devour their rulers. All their kings fall, and none of them call on me!
8Ephraim has mixed itself like flour among the nations; Ephraim is like a ruined cake of bread that is scorched on one side.
9Foreigners are consuming what his strenuous labor produced, but he does not recognize it. His head is filled with gray hair, but he does not realize it.
10The arrogance of Israel testifies against him, yet they refuse to return to the Lord their God. In spite of all this they refuse to seek him.
11Ephraim has been like a dove, easily deceived and lacking discernment. They called to Egypt for help; they turned to Assyria for protection.
12I will throw my bird net over them while they are flying; I will bring them down like birds in the sky; I will discipline them when I hear them flocking together.
13Woe to them! For they have fled from me! Destruction to them! For they have rebelled against me! I want to deliver them, but they have lied to me.
14They do not pray to me, but howl in distress on their beds; they slash themselves for grain and new wine, but turn away from me.
15Although I trained and strengthened them, they plot evil against me!
16They turn to Baal; they are like an unreliable bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword because their prayers to Baal have made me angry. So people will disdain them in the land of Egypt.
1When I would heal Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim is uncovered, also the wickedness of Samaria; for they commit falsehood, and the thief enters in, and the gang of robbers ravages outside.
2They don’t consider in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness. Now their own deeds have engulfed them. They are before my face.
3They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies.
4They are all adulterers. They are burning like an oven that the baker stops stirring, from the kneading of the dough, until it is leavened.
5On the day of our king, the princes made themselves sick with the heat of wine. He joined his hand with mockers.
6For they have prepared their heart like an oven, while they lie in wait. Their baker sleeps all the night. In the morning it burns as a flaming fire.
7They are all hot as an oven, and devour their judges. All their kings have fallen. There is no one among them who calls to me.
8Ephraim, he mixes himself among the nations. Ephraim is a pancake not turned over.
9Strangers have devoured his strength, and he doesn’t realize it. Indeed, gray hairs are here and there on him, and he doesn’t realize it.
10The pride of Israel testifies to his face; yet they haven’t returned to Yahweh their God, nor sought him, for all this.
11“Ephraim is like an easily deceived dove, without understanding. They call to Egypt. They go to Assyria.
12When they go, I will spread my net on them. I will bring them down like the birds of the sky. I will chastise them, as their congregation has heard.
13Woe to them! For they have wandered from me. Destruction to them! For they have trespassed against me. Though I would redeem them, yet they have spoken lies against me.
14They haven’t cried to me with their heart, but they howl on their beds. They assemble themselves for grain and new wine. They turn away from me.
15Though I have taught and strengthened their arms, yet they plot evil against me.
16They return, but not to the Most High. They are like a faulty bow. Their princes will fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue. This will be their derision in the land of Egypt.
Summary
Israel is compared to a heated oven of unchecked passions and a half-baked cake — they mix with foreign nations, seek help from Egypt and Assyria instead of God, yet refuse to return to Him.

Reflection
- 1. "He knoweth it not" (v.9). This is the scariest phrase in the chapter — applied TWICE. You can be losing spiritual strength, aging in your faith, being consumed by the world — and NOT KNOW IT. Ask God to show you your gray hairs. Ask trusted people to tell you what you cannot see. Self-awareness requires external input.
- 2. Are you a "cake not turned"? (v.8). Half-committed. Burned on one side by worldly exposure, raw on the other from neglecting God's refining. Not fully useful to God or satisfying to the world. The solution: let God TURN you. Submit every side of your life to His heat.
- 3. Crying on your bed is not the same as crying to God (v.14). Emotional pain, sleepless nights, anxiety — these are NOT prayer unless directed TO God FROM the heart. Self-pity is not repentance. Redirect your distress GOD-ward.
- 4. God trains you, strengthens you — then watches to see what you do with it (v.15). Every talent, resource, opportunity, strength — it came from God. Are you using God-given capacities to serve God or to serve yourself? To bless others or to rebel?
- 5. "I would heal... I would redeem" (vv.1, 13). God's desire is ALWAYS toward healing and redemption. The obstacle is never His willingness. It is always our resistance. Stop blocking what God wants to give you.
