17And the priest shall see him: and, behold,

1And Jehovah spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

2When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh a rising, or a scab, or a bright spot, and it become in the skin of his flesh the plague of leprosy, then he shall be brought unto Aaron the priest, or unto one of his sons the priests:

3and the priest shall look on the plague in the skin of the flesh: and if the hair in the plague be turned white, and the appearance of the plague be deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is the plague of leprosy; and the priest shall look on him, and pronounce him unclean.

4And if the bright spot be white in the skin of his flesh, and the appearance thereof be not deeper than the skin, and the hair thereof be not turned white, then the priest shall shut up [him that hath] the plague seven days:

5and the priest shall look on him the seventh day: and, behold, if in his eyes the plague be at a stay, and the plague be not spread in the skin, then the priest shall shut him up seven days more:

6and the priest shall look on him again the seventh day; and, behold, if the plague be dim, and the plague be not spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean: it is a scab: and he shall wash his clothes, and be clean.

7But if the scab spread abroad in the skin, after that he hath showed himself to the priest for his cleansing, he shall show himself to the priest again:

8and the priest shall look; and, behold, if the scab be spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is leprosy.

9When the plague of leprosy is in a man, then he shall be brought unto the priest;

10and the priest shall look; and, behold, if there be a white rising in the skin, and it have turned the hair white, and there be quick raw flesh in the rising,

11it is an old leprosy in the skin of his flesh, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean: he shall not shut him up, for he is unclean.

12And if the leprosy break out abroad in the skin, and the leprosy cover all the skin of [him that hath] the plague from his head even to his feet, as far as appeareth to the priest;

13then the priest shall look; and, behold, if the leprosy have covered all his flesh, he shall pronounce [him] clean [that hath] the plague: it is all turned white: he is clean.

14But whensoever raw flesh appeareth in him, he shall be unclean.

15And the priest shall look on the raw flesh, and pronounce him unclean: the raw flesh is unclean: it is leprosy.

16Or if the raw flesh turn again, and be changed unto white, then he shall come unto the priest;

17and the priest shall look on him; and, behold, if the plague be turned into white, then the priest shall pronounce [him] clean [that hath] the plague: he is clean.

18And when the flesh hath in the skin thereof a boil, and it is healed,

19and in the place of the boil there is a white rising, or a bright spot, reddish-white, then is shall be showed to the priest;

20and the priest shall look; and, behold, if the appearance thereof be lower than the skin, and the hair thereof be turned white, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the plague of leprosy, it hath broken out in the boil.

21But if the priest look on it, and, behold, there be no white hairs therein, and it be not lower than the skin, but be dim; then the priest shall shut him up seven days:

22And if it spread abroad in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a plague.

23But if the bright spot stay in its place, and be not spread, it is the scar of the boil; and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

24Or when the flesh hath in the skin thereof a burning by fire, and the quick [flesh] of the burning become a bright spot, reddish-white, or white;

25then the priest shall look upon it; and, behold, if the hair in the bright spot be turned white, and the appearance thereof be deeper than the skin; it is leprosy, it hath broken out in the burning: and the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the plague of leprosy.

26But if the priest look on it, and, behold, there be no white hair in the bright spot, and it be no lower than the skin, but be dim; then the priest shall shut him up seven days:

27and the priest shall look upon him the seventh day: if it spread abroad in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the plague of leprosy.

28And if the bright spot stay in its place, and be not spread in the skin, but be dim; it is the rising of the burning, and the priest shall pronounce him clean: for it is the scar of the burning.

29And when a man or woman hath a plague upon the head or upon the beard,

30then the priest shall look on the plague; and, behold, if the appearance thereof be deeper than the skin, and there be in it yellow thin hair, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a scall, it is leprosy of the head or of the beard.

31And if the priest look on the plague of the scall, and, behold, the appearance thereof be not deeper than the skin, and there be no black hair in it, then the priest shall shut up [him that hath] the plague of the scall seven days:

32And in the seventh day the priest shall look on the plague; and, behold, if the scall be not spread, and there be in it no yellow hair, and the appearance of the scall be not deeper than the skin,

33then he shall be shaven, but the scall shall he not shave; and the priest shall shut up [him that hath] the scall seven days more:

34and in the seventh day the priest shall look on the scall; and, behold, if the scall be not spread in the skin, and the appearance thereof be not deeper than the skin; then the priest shall pronounce him clean: and he shall wash his clothes, and be clean.

35But if the scall spread abroad in the skin after his cleansing,

36then the priest shall look on him; and, behold, if the scall be spread in the skin, the priest shall not seek for the yellow hair; he is unclean.

37But if in his eyes the scall be at a stay, and black hair be grown up therein; the scall is healed, he is clean: and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

38And when a man or a woman hath in the skin of the flesh bright spots, even white bright spots;

39then the priest shall look; and, behold, if the bright spots in the skin of their flesh be of a dull white, it is a tetter, it hath broken out in the skin; he is clean.

40And if a man`s hair be fallen off his head, he is bald; [yet] is he clean.

41And if his hair be fallen off from the front part of his head, he is forehead bald; [yet] is he clean.

42But if there be in the bald head, or the bald forehead, a reddish-white plague; it is leprosy breaking out in his bald head, or his bald forehead.

43Then the priest shall look upon him; and, behold, if the rising of the plague be reddish-white in his bald head, or in his bald forehead, as the appearance of leprosy in the skin of the flesh;

44he is a leprous man, he is unclean: the priest shall surely pronounce him unclean; his plague is in his head.

45And the leper in whom the plague is, his clothes shall be rent, and the hair of his head shall go loose, and he shall cover his upper lip, and shall cry, Unclean, unclean.

46All the days wherein the plague is in him he shall be unclean; he is unclean: he shall dwell alone; without the camp shall his dwelling be.

47The garment also that the plague of leprosy is in, whether it be a woollen garment, or a linen garment;

48whether it be in warp, or woof; of linen, or of woollen; whether in a skin, or in anything made of skin;

49if the plague be greenish or reddish in the garment, or in the skin, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything of skin; it is the plague of leprosy, and shall be showed unto the priest.

50And the priest shall look upon the plague, and shut up [that which hath] the plague seven days:

51and he shall look on the plague on the seventh day: if the plague be spread in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in the skin, whatever service skin is used for; the plague is a fretting leprosy; it is unclean.

52And he shall burn the garment, whether the warp or the woof, in woollen or in linen, or anything of skin, wherein the plague is: for it is a fretting leprosy; it shall be burnt in the fire.

53And if the priest shall look, and, behold, the plague be not spread in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything of skin;

54then the priest shall command that they wash the thing wherein the plague is, and he shall shut it up seven days more:

55and the priest shall look, after that the plague is washed; and, behold, if the plague have not changed its color, and the plague be not spread, it is unclean; thou shalt burn it in the fire: it is a fret, whether the bareness be within or without.

56And if the priest look, and, behold, the plague be dim after the washing thereof, then he shall rend it out of the garment, or out of the skin, or out of the warp, or out of the woof:

57and if it appear still in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything of skin, it is breaking out: thou shalt burn that wherein the plague is with fire.

58And the garment, either the warp, or the woof, or whatsoever thing of skin it be, which thou shalt wash, if the plague be departed from them, then it shall be washed the second time, and shall be clean.

59This is the law of the plague of leprosy in a garment of woollen or linen, either in the warp, or the woof, or anything of skin, to pronounce it clean, or to pronounce it unclean.

1The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron:

2“When someone has a swelling or a scab or a bright spot on the skin of his body that may become a diseased infection, he must be brought to Aaron the priest or one of his sons, the priests.

3The priest must then examine the infection on the skin of the body, and if the hair in the infection has turned white and the infection appears to be deeper than the skin of the body, then it is a diseased infection, so when the priest examines it, he must pronounce the person unclean.

4“If it is a white bright spot on the skin of his body, but it does not appear to be deeper than the skin, and the hair has not turned white, then the priest is to quarantine the person with the infection for seven days.

5The priest must then examine it on the seventh day, and if, as far as he can see, the infection has stayed the same and has not spread on the skin, then the priest is to quarantine the person for another seven days.

6The priest must then examine it again on the seventh day, and if the infection has faded and has not spread on the skin, then the priest is to pronounce the person clean. It is a scab, so he must wash his clothes and be clean.

7If, however, the scab is spreading further on the skin after he has shown himself to the priest for his purification, then he must show himself to the priest a second time.

8The priest must then examine it, and if the scab has spread on the skin, then the priest is to pronounce the person unclean. It is a disease.

9“When someone has a diseased infection, he must be brought to the priest.

10The priest will then examine it, and if a white swelling is on the skin, it has turned the hair white, and there is raw flesh in the swelling,

11it is a chronic disease on the skin of his body, so the priest is to pronounce him unclean. The priest must not merely quarantine him, for he is unclean.

12If, however, the disease breaks out on the skin so that the disease covers all the skin of the person with the infection from his head to his feet, as far as the priest can see,

13the priest must then examine it, and if the disease covers his whole body, he is to pronounce the person with the infection clean. He has turned all white, so he is clean.

14But whenever raw flesh appears in it, he will be unclean,

15so the priest is to examine the raw flesh and pronounce him unclean—it is diseased.

16If, however, the raw flesh once again turns white, then he must come to the priest.

17The priest will then examine it, and if the infection has turned white, the priest is to pronounce the person with the infection clean—he is clean.

18“When someone’s body has a boil on its skin and it heals,

19and in the place of the boil there is a white swelling or a reddish white bright spot, he must show himself to the priest.

20The priest will then examine it, and if it appears to be deeper than the skin and its hair has turned white, then the priest is to pronounce the person unclean. It is a diseased infection that has broken out in the boil.

21If, however, the priest examines it, and there is no white hair in it, it is not deeper than the skin, and it has faded, then the priest is to quarantine him for seven days.

22If it is spreading farther on the skin, then the priest is to pronounce him unclean. It is an infection.

23But if the bright spot stays in its place and has not spread, it is the scar of the boil, so the priest is to pronounce him clean.

24“When a body has a burn on its skin and the raw area of the burn becomes a reddish white or white bright spot,

25the priest must examine it, and if the hair has turned white in the bright spot and it appears to be deeper than the skin, it is a disease that has broken out in the burn. The priest is to pronounce the person unclean. It is a diseased infection.

26If, however, the priest examines it and there is no white hair in the bright spot, it is not deeper than the skin, and it has faded, then the priest is to quarantine him for seven days.

27The priest must then examine it on the seventh day, and if it is spreading further on the skin, then the priest is to pronounce him unclean. It is a diseased infection.

28But if the bright spot stays in its place, has not spread on the skin, and it has faded, then it is the swelling of the burn, so the priest is to pronounce him clean, because it is the scar of the burn.

29“When a man or a woman has an infection on the head or in the beard,

30the priest is to examine the infection, and if it appears to be deeper than the skin and the hair in it is reddish yellow and thin, then the priest is to pronounce the person unclean. It is scall, a disease of the head or the beard.

31But if the priest examines the scall infection and it does not appear to be deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, then the priest is to quarantine the person with the scall infection for seven days.

32The priest must then examine the infection on the seventh day, and if the scall has not spread, there is no reddish yellow hair in it, and the scall does not appear to be deeper than the skin,

33then the individual is to shave himself, but he must not shave the area affected by the scall, and the priest is to quarantine the person with the scall for another seven days.

34The priest must then examine the scall on the seventh day, and if the scall has not spread on the skin and it does not appear to be deeper than the skin, then the priest is to pronounce him clean. So he is to wash his clothes and be clean.

35If, however, the scall spreads further on the skin after his purification,

36then the priest is to examine it, and if the scall has spread on the skin, the priest is not to search further for reddish yellow hair. The person is unclean.

37If, as far as the priest can see, the scall has stayed the same and black hair has sprouted in it, the scall has been healed; the person is clean. So the priest is to pronounce him clean.

38“When a man or a woman has bright spots—white bright spots—on the skin of their body,

39the priest is to examine them, and if the bright spots on the skin of their body are faded white, it is a harmless rash that has broken out on the skin. The person is clean.

40“When a man’s head is bare so that he is balding in back, he is clean.

41If his head is bare on the forehead so that he is balding in front, he is clean.

42But if there is a reddish white infection in the back or front bald area, it is a disease breaking out in his back or front bald area.

43The priest is to examine it, and if the swelling of the infection is reddish white in the back or the front bald area like the appearance of a disease on the skin of the body,

44he is a diseased man. He is unclean. The priest must surely pronounce him unclean because of his infection on his head.

45“As for the diseased person who has the infection, his clothes must be torn, the hair of his head must be unbound, he must cover his mustache, and he must call out ‘Unclean! Unclean!’

46The whole time he has the infection he will be continually unclean. He must live in isolation, and his place of residence must be outside the camp.

47“When a garment has a diseased infection in it, whether a wool or linen garment,

48or in the warp or woof of the linen or the wool, or in leather or anything made of leather,

49if the infection in the garment or leather or warp or woof or any article of leather is yellowish green or reddish, it is a diseased infection, and it must be shown to the priest.

50The priest is to examine and then quarantine the article with the infection for seven days.

51He must then examine the infection on the seventh day. If the infection has spread in the garment, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in the leather—whatever the article into which the leather was made—the infection is a malignant disease. It is unclean.

52He must burn the garment or the warp or the woof, whether wool or linen, or any article of leather which has the infection in it. Because it is a malignant disease it must be burned up in the fire.

53But if the priest examines it and the infection has not spread in the garment or in the warp or in the woof or in any article of leather,

54the priest is to command that they wash whatever has the infection and quarantine it for another seven days.

55The priest must then examine it after the infection has been washed out, and if the infection has not changed its appearance even though the infection has not spread, it is unclean. You must burn it up in the fire. It is a fungus, whether on the back side or front side of the article.

56But if the priest has examined it and the infection has faded after it has been washed, he is to tear it out of the garment or the leather or the warp or the woof.

57Then if it still appears again in the garment or the warp or the woof, or in any article of leather, it is an outbreak. Whatever has the infection in it you must burn up in the fire.

58But the garment or the warp or the woof or any article of leather which you wash and infection disappears from it is to be washed a second time, and it will be clean.”

59This is the law of the diseased infection in the garment of wool or linen, or the warp or woof, or any article of leather, for pronouncing it clean or unclean.

1Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

2“When a man shall have a rising in his body’s skin, or a scab, or a bright spot, and it becomes in the skin of his body the plague of leprosy, then he shall be brought to Aaron the priest, or to one of his sons, the priests:

3and the priest shall examine the plague in the skin of the body: and if the hair in the plague has turned white, and the appearance of the plague is deeper than the body’s skin, it is the plague of leprosy; and the priest shall examine him, and pronounce him unclean.

4If the bright spot is white in the skin of his body, and its appearance isn’t deeper than the skin, and its hair hasn’t turned white, then the priest shall isolate the infected person for seven days.

5The priest shall examine him on the seventh day, and, behold, if in his eyes the plague is arrested, and the plague hasn’t spread in the skin, then the priest shall isolate him for seven more days.

6The priest shall examine him again on the seventh day; and behold, if the plague has faded, and the plague hasn’t spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean. It is a scab. He shall wash his clothes, and be clean.

7But if the scab spreads on the skin, after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he shall show himself to the priest again.

8The priest shall examine him; and behold, if the scab has spread on the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is leprosy.

9“When the plague of leprosy is in a man, then he shall be brought to the priest;

10and the priest shall examine him. Behold, if there is a white rising in the skin, and it has turned the hair white, and there is raw flesh in the rising,

11it is a chronic leprosy in the skin of his body, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean. He shall not isolate him, for he is already unclean.

12“If the leprosy breaks out all over the skin, and the leprosy covers all the skin of the infected person from his head even to his feet, as far as it appears to the priest;

13then the priest shall examine him; and, behold, if the leprosy has covered all his flesh, he shall pronounce him clean of the plague. It has all turned white: he is clean.

14But whenever raw flesh appears in him, he shall be unclean.

15The priest shall examine the raw flesh, and pronounce him unclean: the raw flesh is unclean. It is leprosy.

16Or if the raw flesh turns again, and is changed to white, then he shall come to the priest;

17and the priest shall examine him; and, behold, if the plague has turned white, then the priest shall pronounce him clean of the plague. He is clean.

18“When the body has a boil on its skin, and it has healed,

19and in the place of the boil there is a white rising, or a bright spot, reddish-white, then it shall be shown to the priest;

20and the priest shall examine it; and behold, if its appearance is lower than the skin, and its hair has turned white, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is the plague of leprosy. It has broken out in the boil.

21But if the priest examines it, and behold, there are no white hairs in it, and it isn’t deeper than the skin, but is dim, then the priest shall isolate him seven days.

22If it spreads in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is a plague.

23But if the bright spot stays in its place, and hasn’t spread, it is the scar from the boil; and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

24“Or when the body has a burn from fire on its skin, and the raw flesh of the burn becomes a bright spot, reddish-white, or white,

25then the priest shall examine it; and behold, if the hair in the bright spot has turned white, and its appearance is deeper than the skin; it is leprosy. It has broken out in the burning, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is the plague of leprosy.

26But if the priest examines it, and behold, there is no white hair in the bright spot, and it isn’t lower than the skin, but is faded; then the priest shall isolate him seven days.

27The priest shall examine him on the seventh day. If it has spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is the plague of leprosy.

28If the bright spot stays in its place, and hasn’t spread in the skin, but is faded, it is the swelling from the burn, and the priest shall pronounce him clean; for it is the scar from the burn.

29“When a man or woman has a plague on the head or on the beard,

30then the priest shall examine the plague; and behold, if its appearance is deeper than the skin, and the hair in it is yellow and thin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is an itch, it is leprosy of the head or of the beard.

31If the priest examines the plague of itching, and behold, its appearance isn’t deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, then the priest shall isolate the person infected with itching seven days.

32On the seventh day the priest shall examine the plague; and behold, if the itch hasn’t spread, and there is no yellow hair in it, and the appearance of the itch isn’t deeper than the skin,

33then he shall be shaved, but he shall not shave the itch; and the priest shall shut him up who has the itch seven more days.

34On the seventh day, the priest shall examine the itch; and behold, if the itch hasn’t spread in the skin, and its appearance isn’t deeper than the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean. He shall wash his clothes, and be clean.

35But if the itch spreads in the skin after his cleansing,

36then the priest shall examine him; and behold, if the itch has spread in the skin, the priest shall not look for the yellow hair; he is unclean.

37But if in his eyes the itch is arrested, and black hair has grown in it; the itch is healed, he is clean. The priest shall pronounce him clean.

38“When a man or a woman has bright spots in the skin of the body, even white bright spots;

39then the priest shall examine them; and behold, if the bright spots on the skin of their body are a dull white, it is a harmless rash, it has broken out in the skin; he is clean.

40“If a man’s hair has fallen from his head, he is bald. He is clean.

41If his hair has fallen off from the front part of his head, he is forehead bald. He is clean.

42But if there is in the bald head, or the bald forehead, a reddish-white plague; it is leprosy breaking out in his bald head, or his bald forehead.

43Then the priest shall examine him; and, behold, if the rising of the plague is reddish-white in his bald head, or in his bald forehead, like the appearance of leprosy in the skin of the flesh,

44he is a leprous man. He is unclean. The priest shall surely pronounce him unclean. His plague is on his head.

45“The leper in whom the plague is shall wear torn clothes, and the hair of his head shall hang loose. He shall cover his upper lip, and shall cry, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’

46All the days in which the plague is in him he shall be unclean. He is unclean. He shall dwell alone. Outside of the camp shall be his dwelling.

47“The garment also that the plague of leprosy is in, whether it is a woolen garment, or a linen garment;

48whether it is in warp, or woof; of linen, or of wool; whether in a skin, or in anything made of skin;

49if the plague is greenish or reddish in the garment, or in the skin, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything made of skin; it is the plague of leprosy, and shall be shown to the priest.

50The priest shall examine the plague, and isolate the plague seven days.

51He shall examine the plague on the seventh day. If the plague has spread in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in the skin, whatever use the skin is used for, the plague is a destructive mildew. It is unclean.

52He shall burn the garment, whether the warp or the woof, in wool or in linen, or anything of skin, in which the plague is: for it is a destructive mildew. It shall be burned in the fire.

53“If the priest examines it, and behold, the plague hasn’t spread in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything of skin;

54then the priest shall command that they wash the thing in which the plague is, and he shall isolate it seven more days.

55Then the priest shall examine it, after the plague is washed; and behold, if the plague hasn’t changed its color, and the plague hasn’t spread, it is unclean; you shall burn it in the fire. It is a mildewed spot, whether the bareness is inside or outside.

56If the priest looks, and behold, the plague has faded after it is washed, then he shall tear it out of the garment, or out of the skin, or out of the warp, or out of the woof:

57and if it appears again in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything of skin, it is spreading. You shall burn with fire that in which the plague is.

58The garment, either the warp, or the woof, or whatever thing of skin it is, which you shall wash, if the plague has departed from them, then it shall be washed the second time, and it will be clean.”

59This is the law of the plague of mildew in a garment of wool or linen, either in the warp, or the woof, or in anything of skin, to pronounce it clean, or to pronounce it unclean.

Summary

God gives detailed instructions for diagnosing skin diseases and declaring a person clean or unclean — the priest serves as both spiritual and medical guardian.

Authorship & Background

Author: Moses. Leviticus is the third book of the Pentateuch, written during the wilderness period (approximately 1445-1405 BC). Hebrew title: "Vayikra" — "And He called." God speaks from the newly completed Tabernacle, giving Israel instructions for worship, sacrifice, and holy living.
Historical Context: Chapter 13 is the longest chapter in Leviticus (59 verses) and deals with the diagnosis and quarantine of "leprosy" (Hebrew: tsara'at). This is NOT limited to what modern medicine calls leprosy (Hansen's disease) — tsara'at is a broader category encompassing various skin diseases, and even extends to garments (vv.47-59) and houses (14:33- 53). The chapter is addressed to Moses AND Aaron (v.1) because the PRIEST — not a physician — is the one who diagnoses and declares clean or unclean. This is fundamentally a spiritual/ceremonial matter, not merely a medical one. The priest functions as a spiritual diagnostician. Throughout Scripture, leprosy/tsara'at serves as the primary picture of SIN: it begins small, it spreads, it defiles, it separates from community and from God, it is incurable by human means, and it requires divine intervention for healing. The leper's cry of "Unclean, unclean!" (v.45) is the cry of every sinner who recognizes their condition. The leper's exclusion from the camp pictures sin's separation from God's presence. This chapter establishes the diagnosis; chapter 14 provides the restoration.
Initial Examination — Skin Diseases (vv.1-8): God speaks to Moses and Aaron (v.1). When a person has a swelling, scab/eruption, or bright spot in the skin that looks like "the plague of leprosy" (KJV) / "a case of leprous disease" (ESV), he is brought to the priest (v.2). The priest examines: if the hair has turned white AND the disease appears deeper than the skin — it IS leprosy; pronounce him unclean (v.3). If the spot is white but NOT deeper than the skin and hair NOT turned white — quarantine seven days (v.4). Seventh day: if the disease is checked and has not spread — quarantine seven more days (v.5). Second seventh day: if faded and not spread — pronounce clean; it is only a scab/eruption; wash clothes (v.6). But if it spreads after being shown to the priest — return to the priest (v.7). If spreading — pronounce unclean; it is leprosy (v.8). Key diagnostic criteria: (1) deeper than the skin, (2) white hair, (3) spreading. Sin goes deeper than the surface, changes what grows from us, and spreads if unchecked.
Chronic Leprosy (vv.9-17): If there is a white swelling with white hair and raw flesh — it is chronic/old leprosy; pronounce unclean immediately; no quarantine needed (vv.9-11). Remarkable provision: if leprosy covers the ENTIRE body from head to foot — all turned white — pronounce him CLEAN (vv.12-13). But if raw flesh appears — unclean (vv.14-15). If raw flesh turns white again — clean (vv.16-17). This is paradoxical: partial leprosy is unclean, but TOTAL covering is clean. The spiritual picture: the person who partially acknowledges sin (some spots showing) is in a dangerous state. But the one who is COMPLETELY covered — who acknowledges total depravity, total sinfulness — is declared clean. "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves... If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us" (1 John 1:8-9). Total acknowledgment leads to cleansing.
Leprosy in a Boil (vv.18-23): A healed boil that develops a white swelling or reddish-white spot — show to the priest (vv.18-19). If deeper than skin and white hair — unclean; leprosy broken out in the boil (v.20). If not deeper, no white hair, but faded — quarantine seven days (v.21). If it spreads — unclean (v.22). If it stays in place — it is the scar of the boil; clean (v.23). Old wounds can become sites of new infection. Past hurts, if not properly healed, can become entry points for deeper spiritual disease.
Leprosy in a Burn (vv.24-28): A burn that develops a white or reddish-white spot (v.24). Same diagnostic criteria: white hair + deeper than skin = unclean (v.25). No white hair + not deeper + faded = quarantine seven days (v.26). If spreading — unclean (v.27). If staying in place and fading — clean; it is the scar of the burn (v.28). Same principle: trauma (burns) can become sites of spiritual infection if not properly addressed.
Leprosy of the Head or Beard (vv.29-37): Disease on the head or beard (v.29). If deeper than skin and yellow thin hair — unclean; it is a "dry scall" (KJV) / "itch" (ESV) — leprosy of the head or beard (v.30). If not deeper and no black hair — quarantine seven days (v.31). Seventh day: if not spread, no yellow hair, not deeper — shave around it (not the scall itself); quarantine seven more days (vv.32-33). Second seventh day: if not spread and not deeper — clean; wash clothes (v.34). If it spreads after cleansing — unclean; no need to look for yellow hair (vv.35-36). If unchanged and black hair grows — healed; clean (v.37).
Harmless Skin Conditions (vv.38-41): White spots that are dull/darkish white — it is a "freckled spot" (KJV) / "leukoderma" (ESV); he is clean (vv.38-39). Baldness — whether from the back of the head or the forehead — he is clean (vv.40-41). Not every blemish is leprosy. Not every imperfection is sin. The priest must discern the difference.
Leprosy on a Bald Head (vv.42-44): A reddish-white sore on the bald head or forehead — leprosy (vv.42-43). "He is a leprous man, he is unclean: the priest shall pronounce him utterly unclean; his plague is in his head" (v.44). The disease has reached the head — the seat of thought and identity. Sin that reaches the mind is deeply entrenched.
The Leper's Condition — Separation and Cry (vv.45-46): The leper's requirements: torn clothes, bare/loose head, covered upper lip, and he must cry "Unclean, unclean!" (v.45). He is defiled all the days of his disease (v.46). He shall dwell ALONE — outside the camp (v.46). Complete separation from community, from worship, from normal life. This is the fullest picture of sin's consequences: isolation, shame, public declaration of defilement, exclusion from God's presence. The leper cannot heal himself. He can only cry out his condition and wait for God.
Leprosy in Garments (vv.47-59): Leprosy can appear in wool, linen, or leather garments (vv.47-48). Greenish or reddish marks — show to the priest (v.49). Quarantine the garment seven days (v.50). If spread — "fretting leprosy" (KJV) / "persistent leprous disease" (ESV); unclean; burn it (vv.51-52). If not spread — wash it; quarantine seven more days (vv.53-54). If unchanged after washing (even if not spread) — unclean; burn it; "it is fret inward" (KJV) — the rot is internal (v.55). If faded after washing — tear out the affected part (v.56). If it reappears — spreading; burn it (v.57). If departed after washing — wash again; clean (v.58). Summary statement (v.59). Sin affects not just the person but their environment — their "garments" (habits, associations, possessions).

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes leprosy as the Bible's primary picture of sin: it begins small, spreads relentlessly, defiles everything it touches, separates from community, and is humanly incurable. He highlights the paradox of vv.12-13 (total covering = clean) as a picture of total confession leading to forgiveness. He notes that the priest does not HEAL — he only DIAGNOSES. Only God can heal leprosy/sin.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Leper's Cry" "Unclean, unclean! — this is the leper's cry, and it must be the sinner's cry. You cannot be healed until you acknowledge your disease. The man who covers his leprosy is the man who dies of it. But the man who uncovers it — who tears his clothes, bares his head, covers his mouth in shame, and cries UNCLEAN — that man is on the road to healing. For Christ came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. He touches lepers. He goes outside the camp where the unclean dwell. And His touch makes clean. But first — you must cry 'Unclean.' First you must know your disease. First you must dwell outside the camp of your own righteousness. Then — and only then — the Great Physician comes."

Reflection

  • 1. The priest diagnoses but does not heal (v.3). Only God heals leprosy (2 Kings 5:7). Pastors, counselors, and friends can identify sin and call it what it is — but only God can cleanse. Have you been trying to heal yourself? Or have you brought your disease to the only One who can cure it?
  • 2. "Unclean, unclean!" (v.45). The leper must publicly acknowledge his condition. There is no healing without honesty. Are you hiding your sin, pretending to be clean? Or are you willing to cry out your true condition? "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us" (1 John 1:9).
  • 3. The paradox of vv.12-13: when leprosy covers EVERYTHING, the person is declared clean. When you stop hiding spots and acknowledge that you are TOTALLY fallen — "all have sinned" (Romans 3:23) — that is when cleansing comes. Partial confession keeps you unclean. Total confession brings total cleansing.
  • 4. Sin spreads (vv.7-8, 22, 27, 35, 51, 57). The consistent diagnostic sign of true leprosy is SPREADING. Sin never stays contained. It always grows, always infects more territory. What sin in your life have you told yourself is "under control" while it quietly spreads?
  • 5. "He shall dwell alone; without the camp" (v.46). Sin isolates. It separates you from God's people, from worship, from community. But Christ "suffered without the gate" (Hebrews 13:12) — He went OUTSIDE the camp, to where the lepers are, to bring them back in. He touched the untouchable (Matthew 8:3). He went where you are to bring you where He is.
