1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the LORD your God.
3After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances.
4Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I
5Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I

7The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
8The nakedness of thy father’s wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father’s nakedness.
9The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy father, or daughter of thy mother,
10The nakedness of thy son’s daughter, or of thy daughter’s daughter,
11The nakedness of thy father’s wife’s daughter, begotten of thy father, she

14Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she
15Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter in law: she
16Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother’s wife: it
17Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, neither shalt thou take her son’s daughter, or her daughter’s daughter, to uncover her nakedness;
18Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex
19Also thou shalt not approach unto a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is put apart for her uncleanness.
20Moreover thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbour’s wife, to defile thyself with her.
21And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through

3After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do; neither shall ye walk in their statutes.
4Mine ordinances shall ye do, and my statutes shall ye keep, to walk therein: I am Jehovah your God.
5Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and mine ordinances; which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am Jehovah.
6None of you shall approach to any that are near of kin to him, to uncover [their] nakedness: I am Jehovah.
7The nakedness of thy father, even the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
8The nakedness of thy father`s wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father`s nakedness.
9The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy father, or the daughter of thy mother, whether born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover.
10The nakedness of thy son`s daughter, or of thy daughter`s daughter, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover: for theirs is thine own nakedness.
11The nakedness of thy father`s wife`s daughter, begotten of thy father, she is thy sister, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
12Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father`s sister: she is thy father`s near kinswoman.
13Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother`s sister: for she is thy mother`s near kinswoman.
14Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father`s brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she is thine aunt.
15Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter-in-law: she is thy son`s wife; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
16Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother`s wife: it is thy brother`s nakedness.
17Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter; thou shalt not take her son`s daughter, or her daughter`s daughter, to uncover her nakedness; they are near kinswomen: it is wickedness.
18And thou shalt not take a wife to her sister, to be a rival [to her], to uncover her nakedness, besides the other in her life-time.
19And thou shalt not approach unto a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is impure by her uncleanness.
20And thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbor`s wife, to defile thyself with her.
21And thou shalt not give any of thy seed to make them pass through [the fire] to Molech; neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am Jehovah.
22Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
23And thou shalt not lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith; neither shall any woman stand before a beast, to lie down thereto: it is confusion.
24Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out from before you;
25And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land vomiteth out her inhabitants.
26Ye therefore shall keep my statutes and mine ordinances, and shall not do any of these abominations; neither the home-born, nor the stranger that sojourneth among you;
27(for all these abominations have the men of the land done, that were before you, and the land is defiled);
28that the land vomit not you out also, when ye defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you.
29For whosoever shall do any of these abominations, even the souls that do them shall be cut off from among their people.
30Therefore shall ye keep my charge, that ye practise not any of these abominable customs, which were practised before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I am Jehovah your God.
1The Lord spoke to Moses:
2“Speak to the Israelites and tell them, ‘I am the Lord your God!
3You must not do as they do in the land of Egypt where you have been living, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan into which I am about to bring you; you must not walk in their statutes.
4You must observe my regulations, and you must be sure to walk in my statutes. I am the Lord your God.
5So you must keep my statutes and my regulations; anyone who does so will live by keeping them. I am the Lord.
6“‘No man is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations with her. I am the Lord.
7You must not expose your father’s nakedness by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; you must not have sexual relations with her.
8You must not have sexual relations with your father’s wife; she is your father’s nakedness.
9You must not have sexual relations with your sister, whether she is your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether she is born in the same household or born outside it; you must not have sexual relations with either of them.
10You must not expose the nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter by having sexual relations with them, because they are your own nakedness.
11You must not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father’s wife born of your father; she is your sister. You must not have sexual relations with her.
12You must not have sexual relations with your father’s sister; she is your father’s flesh.
13You must not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister, because she is your mother’s flesh.
14You must not expose the nakedness of your father’s brother; you must not approach his wife to have marital relations with her. She is your aunt.
15You must not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law; she is your son’s wife. You must not have sexual relations with her.
16You must not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife; she is your brother’s nakedness.
17You must not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter; you must not take as wife either her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter to have sexual relations with them. They are closely related to her—it is lewdness.
18You must not take a woman in marriage and then marry her sister as a rival wife while she is still alive, to have sexual relations with her.
19“‘You must not approach a woman in her menstrual impurity to have sexual relations with her.
20You must not have sexual relations with the wife of your fellow citizen to become unclean with her.
21You must not give any of your children as an offering to Molech, so that you do not profane the name of your God. I am the Lord!
22You must not have sexual relations with a male as one has sexual relations with a woman; it is a detestable act.
23You must not have sexual relations with any animal to become defiled with it, and a woman must not stand before an animal to have sexual relations with it; it is a perversion.
24“‘Do not defile yourselves with any of these things, for the nations that I am about to drive out before you have been defiled with all these things.
25Therefore the land has become unclean, and I have brought the punishment for its iniquity upon it, so that the land has vomited out its inhabitants.
26You yourselves must obey my statutes and my regulations and must not do any of these abominations, both the native citizen and the resident foreigner in your midst,
27for the people who were in the land before you have done all these abominations, and the land has become unclean.
28So do not make the land vomit you out because you defile it just as it has vomited out the nations that were before you.
29For if anyone does any of these abominations, that person who does them will be cut off from the midst of the people.
30You must obey my charge not to practice any of the abominable statutes that have been done before you, so that you do not defile yourselves by them. I am the Lord your God.’”
1Yahweh said to Moses,
2“Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘I am Yahweh your God.
3You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived: and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. You shall not follow their statutes.
4You shall do my ordinances, and you shall keep my statutes, and walk in them: I am Yahweh your God.
5You shall therefore keep my statutes and my ordinances; which if a man does, he shall live in them. I am Yahweh.
6“‘None of you shall approach any close relatives, to uncover their nakedness: I am Yahweh.
7“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father, nor the nakedness of your mother: she is your mother. You shall not uncover her nakedness.
8“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife. It is your father’s nakedness.
9“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father, or the daughter of your mother, whether born at home, or born abroad.
10“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your son’s daughter, or of your daughter’s daughter, even their nakedness: for theirs is your own nakedness.
11“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, conceived by your father, since she is your sister.
12“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister: she is your father’s near kinswoman.
13“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister: for she is your mother’s near kinswoman.
14“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother, you shall not approach his wife. She is your aunt.
15“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law: she is your son’s wife. You shall not uncover her nakedness.
16“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife. It is your brother’s nakedness.
17“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter. You shall not take her son’s daughter, or her daughter’s daughter, to uncover her nakedness; they are near kinswomen: it is wickedness.
18“‘You shall not take a wife in addition to her sister, to be a rival, to uncover her nakedness, while her sister is still alive.
19“‘You shall not approach a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is impure by her uncleanness.
20“‘You shall not lie carnally with your neighbor’s wife, and defile yourself with her.
21“‘You shall not give any of your children as a sacrifice to Molech. You shall not profane the name of your God. I am Yahweh.
22“‘You shall not lie with a man, as with a woman. That is detestable.
23“‘You shall not lie with any animal to defile yourself with it. No woman may give herself to an animal, to lie down with it: it is a perversion.
24“‘Don’t defile yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations which I am casting out before you were defiled.
25The land was defiled: therefore I punished its iniquity, and the land vomited out her inhabitants.
26You therefore shall keep my statutes and my ordinances, and shall not do any of these abominations; neither the native-born, nor the stranger who lives as a foreigner among you;
27(for the men of the land that were before you had done all these abominations, and the land became defiled);
28that the land not vomit you out also, when you defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you.
29“‘For whoever shall do any of these abominations, even the souls that do them shall be cut off from among their people.
30Therefore you shall keep my requirements, that you do not practice any of these abominable customs, which were practiced before you, and that you do not defile yourselves with them. I am Yahweh your God.’”
Summary
God forbids sexual immorality in all its forms — incest, adultery, homosexuality, and bestiality — distinguishing Israel from the surrounding nations.

Map & Geography
- Egypt (v.3): Land to the southwest; place of Israel's bondage and exodus.
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes the framing: Israel must be different from both Egypt and Canaan. He notes that the inclusion of Molech worship among sexual sins shows the connection between sexual immorality and idolatry. He highlights the personification of the land — creation itself responds to moral corruption.
- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "Separation from the World" "God says to His people: you shall not do as Egypt does, and you shall not do as Canaan does. You came FROM the world, and you live IN the world, but you are not OF the world. The world behind you practiced these things — do not look back. The world before you practices these things — do not conform. You are a peculiar people, a holy nation, set apart for God. The standard is not what the culture permits but what God commands. And His commands are not burdensome — they are LIFE. 'Which if a man do, he shall live in them.' God's boundaries are not prison walls; they are garden walls — keeping death out and life in."
Reflection
- 1. "After the doings of Egypt... after the doings of Canaan... shall ye not do" (v.3). You came FROM a culture and you live IN a culture — but you are not defined by either. The standard for God's people is not "what everyone else does" but "what God says." Where are you conforming to the culture you came from or the culture you live in rather than to God's Word?
- 2. "Which if a man do, he shall live in them" (v.5). God's commands are not arbitrary restrictions — they are the path to LIFE. Every boundary God sets is a protection. The fence is not a prison wall; it is a guardrail on a cliff. Obedience leads to flourishing; transgression leads to destruction.
- 3. "I am the LORD" — repeated throughout. God does not negotiate His standards. He does not adjust them to cultural trends. He does not explain Himself to satisfy human curiosity. He declares: "I am the LORD." His character is the unchanging standard. Are you adjusting God's Word to fit your culture, or adjusting your life to fit God's Word?
- 4. "The land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants" (v.25). Sin has consequences that extend beyond the individual. Moral corruption affects families, communities, nations, and even the physical land. The Canaanites were expelled for these very sins. Israel was later exiled for the same. No nation is exempt from moral accountability.
- 5. The Canaanites' sin was "not yet full" in Abraham's day (Genesis 15:16). God waited 400 years before judging them. He is patient — but patience has a limit. The same sins that filled the Canaanites' cup will fill any nation's cup. God's patience is not permission.
