Revelation — Chapter 16

1And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

2And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.

3And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.

4And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.

5And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.

6For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.

7And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.

8And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.

9And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

10And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

11And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

12And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

13And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

14For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

15Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

16And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

17And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.

18And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.

19And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

20And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

21And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

1And I heard a great voice out of the temple, saying to the seven angels, Go ye, and pour out the seven bowls of the wrath of God into the earth.

2And the first went, and poured out his bowl into the earth; and it became a noisome and grievous sore upon the men that had the mark of the beast, and that worshipped his image.

3And the second poured out his bowl into the sea; and it became blood as of a dead man; and every living soul died, [even] the things that were in the sea.

4And the third poured out his bowl into the rivers and the fountains of the waters; and it became blood.

5And I heard the angel of the waters saying, Righteous art thou, who art and who wast, thou Holy One, because thou didst thus judge:

6for they poured out the blood of the saints and the prophets, and blood hast thou given them to drink: they are worthy.

7And I heard the altar saying, Yea, O Lord God, the Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.

8And the fourth poured out his bowl upon the sun; and it was given unto it to scorch men with fire.

9And men were scorched men with great heat: and they blasphemed the name of God who hath the power over these plagues; and they repented not to give him glory.

10And the fifth poured out his bowl upon the throne of the beast; and his kingdom was darkened; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

11and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores; and they repented not of their works.

12And the sixth poured out his bowl upon the great river, the [river] Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way might by made ready for the kings that [come] from the sunrising.

13And I saw [coming] out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits, as it were frogs:

14for they are spirits of demons, working signs; which go forth unto the kings of the whole world, to gather them together unto the war of the great day of God, the Almighty.

15(Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walked naked, and they see his shame.)

16And they gathered them together into the place which is called in Hebrew Har-magedon.

17And the seventh poured out his bowl upon the air; and there came forth a great voice out of the temple, from the throne, saying, It is done:

18and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunders; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since there were men upon the earth, so great an earthquake, so mighty.

19And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and Babylon the great was remembered in the sight of God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

20And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

21And great hail, [every stone] about the weight of a talent, cometh down out of heaven upon men: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof is exceeding great.

1Then I heard a loud voice from the temple declaring to the seven angels: “Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls containing God’s wrath.”

2So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth. Then ugly and painful sores appeared on the people who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.

3Next, the second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood, like that of a corpse, and every living creature that was in the sea died.

4Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and the springs of water, and they turned into blood.

5Now I heard the angel of the waters saying: “You are just—the one who is and who was, the Holy One—because you have passed these judgments,

6because they poured out the blood of your saints and prophets, so you have given them blood to drink. They got what they deserved!”

7Then I heard the altar reply, “Yes, Lord God, the All-Powerful, your judgments are true and just!”

8Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was permitted to scorch people with fire.

9Thus people were scorched by the terrible heat, yet they blasphemed the name of God, who has ruling authority over these plagues, and they would not repent and give him glory.

10Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast so that darkness covered his kingdom, and people began to bite their tongues because of their pain.

11They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their sufferings and because of their sores, but nevertheless they still refused to repent of their deeds.

12Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates and dried up its water to prepare the way for the kings from the east.

13Then I saw three unclean spirits that looked like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

14For they are the spirits of the demons performing signs who go out to the kings of the earth to bring them together for the battle that will take place on the great day of God, the All-Powerful.

15(Look ! I will come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays alert and does not lose his clothes so that he will not have to walk around naked and his shameful condition be seen.)

16Now the spirits gathered the kings and their armies to the place that is called Armageddon in Hebrew.

17Finally the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air and a loud voice came out of the temple from the throne, saying: “It is done!”

18Then there were flashes of lightning, roaring, and crashes of thunder, and there was a tremendous earthquake—an earthquake unequaled since humanity has been on the earth, so tremendous was that earthquake.

19The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. So Babylon the great was remembered before God and was given the cup filled with the wine made of God’s furious wrath.

20Every island fled away, and no mountains could be found.

21And gigantic hailstones, weighing about a 100 pounds each, fell from heaven on people, but they blasphemed God because of the plague of hail, since it was so horrendous.

1I heard a loud voice out of the temple, saying to the seven angels, “Go and pour out the seven bowls of the wrath of God on the earth!”

2The first went, and poured out his bowl into the earth, and it became a harmful and evil sore on the people who had the mark of the beast, and who worshiped his image.

3The second angel poured out his bowl into the sea, and it became blood as of a dead man. Every living thing in the sea died.

4The third poured out his bowl into the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood.

5I heard the angel of the waters saying, “You are righteous, who are and who were, O Holy One, because you have judged these things.

6For they poured out the blood of the saints and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink. They deserve this.”

7I heard the altar saying, “Yes, Lord God, the Almighty, true and righteous are your judgments.”

8The fourth poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was given to him to scorch men with fire.

9People were scorched with great heat, and people blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues. They didn’t repent and give him glory.

10The fifth poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was darkened. They gnawed their tongues because of the pain,

11and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores. They didn’t repent of their works.

12The sixth poured out his bowl on the great river, the Euphrates. Its water was dried up, that the way might be prepared for the kings that come from the sunrise.

13I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits, something like frogs;

14for they are spirits of demons, performing signs; which go out to the kings of the whole inhabited earth, to gather them together for the war of that great day of God, the Almighty.

15“Behold, I come like a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his clothes, so that he doesn’t walk naked, and they see his shame.”

16He gathered them together into the place which is called in Hebrew, Megiddo.

17The seventh poured out his bowl into the air. A loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, “It is done!”

18There were lightnings, sounds, and thunders; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since there were men on the earth, so great an earthquake, so mighty.

19The great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. Babylon the great was remembered in the sight of God, to give to her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

20Every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

21Great hailstones, about the weight of a talent, came down out of the sky on people. People blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, for this plague is exceedingly severe.

Summary

The seven bowls of wrath are poured out: sores, sea turned to blood, rivers to blood, scorching heat, darkness on the beast's kingdom, the Euphrates dried up for eastern kings, and the final earthquake destroying cities — "It is done."

Authorship & Background

Author: The Apostle John (see Chapter 1 notes for full details).
Historical Context: Chapter 16 contains the seven bowl (vial) judgments — the final, most severe outpouring of God's wrath. Unlike the seals (one-quarter) and trumpets (one-third), the bowls are total and complete. They echo the Egyptian plagues but on a global scale. Despite unprecedented suffering, humanity blasphemes God and refuses to repent (vv.9, 11, 21). The chapter culminates in Armageddon (v.16) and the declaration "It is done" (v.17).
The Seven Bowls:
  • Bowl 1 (v.2): Painful sores on those with the beast's mark.
  • Bowl 2 (v.3): The entire sea becomes blood; all sea life dies.
  • Bowl 3 (vv.4-7): Rivers/springs become blood. Heaven declares God's justice.
  • Bowl 4 (vv.8-9): The sun scorches men with fire. They blaspheme, don't repent.
  • Bowl 5 (vv.10-11): Darkness on the beast's kingdom. Pain. Blasphemy. No repentance.
  • Bowl 6 (vv.12-16): Euphrates dried up. Demonic spirits gather kings to Armageddon.
  • Bowl 7 (vv.17-21): "It is done." Greatest earthquake ever. Babylon judged. 100-pound hailstones. Blasphemy.

Map & Geography

  • Euphrates (v.12): Major river in Mesopotamia; boundary of the Promised Land.
  • Armageddon (v.16): Greek form of Har-Megiddo (Mount Megiddo); site of final battle in Revelation.
  • Babylon (v.19): Capital of the Babylonian empire; place of Judah's exile (modern Iraq).

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik covers each bowl judgment, the justice declarations, Armageddon, and the "It is done" pronouncement.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "It Is Done" on v.17 (MTP Vol. 18, No. 1075) "It is done — the same words Christ spoke on the cross: 'It is finished.' There, salvation was completed. Here, judgment is completed. Both are finished works. God's mercy has a 'finished.' God's wrath has a 'done.' Nothing remains incomplete in God's plan."

Reflection

  • 1. "True and righteous are thy judgments" (v.7). Even in the most severe judgment, God is just. Can you trust His justice even when it seems harsh?
  • 2. "They repented not" (vv.9, 11, 21). Three times — stubborn refusal. What does it take for YOU to repent? Don't wait for judgment to drive you to God — come now through grace.
  • 3. "Behold, I come as a thief" (v.15). Even amid final judgments, Christ warns: be ready. Are you watching? Are you keeping your garments?
  • 4. "It is done" (v.17). God's plan will be completed. Nothing can stop it. Are you on the right side of "done"?
