Revelation — Chapter 22
Loading ESV text...
1And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
2In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
4And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
5And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
6And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.
7Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
8And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
9Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
10And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
11He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
12And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
14Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
16I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
17And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
18For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
20He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
21The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
1And he showed me a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb,
2in the midst of the street thereof. And on this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve [manner of] fruits, yielding its fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3And there shall be no curse any more: and the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be therein: and his servants shall serve him;
4and they shall see his face; and his name [shall be] on their foreheads.
5And there shall be night no more; and they need no light of lamp, neither light of sun; for the Lord God shall give them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
6And he said unto me, These words are faithful and true: and the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angels to show unto his servants the things which must shortly come to pass.
7And behold, I come quickly. Blessed is he that keepeth the words of the prophecy of this book.
8And I John am he that heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel that showed me these things.
9And he saith unto me, See thou do it not: I am a fellow-servant with thee and with thy brethren the prophets, and with them that keep the words of this book: worship God.
10And he saith unto me, Seal not up the words of the prophecy of this book; for the time is at hand.
11He that is unrighteous, let him do unrighteousness still: and he that is filthy, let him be made filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him do righteousness still: and he that is holy, let him be made holy still.
12Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to render to each man according as his work is.
13I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.
14Blessed are they that wash their robes, that they may have the right [to come] to the tree of life, and my enter in by the gates into the city.
15Without are the dogs, and the sorcerers, and the fornicators, and the murderers, and the idolaters, and every one that loveth and maketh a lie.
16I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things for the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright, the morning star.
17And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And he that heareth, let him say, Come. And he that is athirst, let him come: he that will, let him take the water of life freely.
18I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall add unto them, God shall add unto him the plagues which are written in this book:
19and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book.
20He who testifieth these things saith, Yea: I come quickly. Amen: come, Lord Jesus.
21The grace of the Lord Jesus be with the saints. Amen.
1Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life—water as clear as crystal—pouring out from the throne of God and of the Lamb,
2flowing down the middle of the city’s main street. On each side of the river is the tree of life producing 12 kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month of the year. Its leaves are for the healing of the nations.
3And there will no longer be any curse, and the throne of God and the Lamb will be in the city. His servants will worship him,
4and they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.
5Night will be no more, and they will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, because the Lord God will shine on them, and they will reign forever and ever.
6Then the angel said to me, “These words are reliable and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must happen soon.”
7(Look ! I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy expressed in this book.)
8I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things, and when I heard and saw them, I threw myself down to worship at the feet of the angel who was showing them to me.
9But he said to me, “Do not do this! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers the prophets, and with those who obey the words of this book. Worship God!”
10Then he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy contained in this book, because the time is near.
11The evildoer must continue to do evil, and the one who is morally filthy must continue to be filthy. The one who is righteous must continue to act righteously, and the one who is holy must continue to be holy.”
12(Look ! I am coming soon, and my reward is with me to pay each one according to what he has done!
13I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end!)
14Blessed are those who wash their robes so they can have access to the tree of life and can enter into the city by the gates.
15Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the sexually immoral, and the murderers, and the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood!
16“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star!”
17And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say: “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wants it take the water of life free of charge.
18I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy contained in this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book.
19And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book.
20The one who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!
21The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.
1He showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb,
2in the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3There will be no curse any more. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will serve him.
4They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.
5There will be no night, and they need no lamp light; for the Lord God will illuminate them. They will reign forever and ever.
6He said to me, “These words are faithful and true. The Lord God of the spirits of the prophets sent his angel to show to his bondservants the things which must happen soon.”
7“Behold, I come quickly. Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
8Now I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. When I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who had shown me these things.
9He said to me, “See you don’t do it! I am a fellow bondservant with you and with your brothers, the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”
10He said to me, “Don’t seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is at hand.
11He who acts unjustly, let him act unjustly still. He who is filthy, let him be filthy still. He who is righteous, let him do righteousness still. He who is holy, let him be holy still.”
12“Behold, I come quickly. My reward is with me, to repay to each man according to his work.
13I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
14Blessed are those who do his commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter in by the gates into the city.
15Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
16I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify these things to you for the assemblies. I am the root and the offspring of David; the Bright and Morning Star.”
17The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” He who hears, let him say, “Come!” He who is thirsty, let him come. He who desires, let him take the water of life freely.
18I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book, if anyone adds to them, may God add to him the plagues which are written in this book.
19If anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, may God take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book.
20He who testifies these things says, “Yes, I come quickly.” Amen! Yes, come, Lord Jesus.
21The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with all the saints. Amen.

Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik covers the river and tree of life, the no-more-curse promise, the final invitation, and the Bible's closing words.
- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "Come, Lord Jesus" on v.20 (MTP Vol. 22, No. 1326) "Even so, come, Lord Jesus — the last prayer of the Bible. The church's deepest longing expressed in four words. Come — we are ready. Come — we are waiting. Come — we are longing. Come, Lord Jesus. Not 'come eventually' but 'come quickly.' This should be the prayer of every believer: not fear of His coming but desire for it. Even so — yes, truly, absolutely — come." Sermon: "Whosoever Will" on v.17 (MTP Vol. 30, No. 1808) "Whosoever WILL — the widest possible invitation. No one excluded by God who is not excluded by their own unwillingness. The Spirit says come. The bride says come. The hearer says come. The thirsty are invited. Whosoever wills may take. Freely — without cost, without merit, without condition except willingness. The Bible ends not with a threat but with an invitation. Come."

Reflection
- 1. "There shall be no more curse" (v.3). Everything sin broke will be fixed. Every consequence of the fall — reversed. What aspect of the curse do you most long to see removed?
- 2. "They shall see his face" (v.4). Face-to-face with God — the ultimate destiny. Does this hope draw you? Is seeing God's face your deepest desire?
- 3. "Behold, I come quickly" (v.12). Christ's return is imminent. Are you ready? Are you living in anticipation? Can you say with John, "Even so, come, Lord Jesus"?
- 4. "Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely" (v.17). The Bible's final invitation is open to anyone who will come. Have you come? Are you inviting others to come?
- 5. "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all" (v.21). The Bible ends with grace. Whatever you face, grace is the final word. God's grace is with you — today, tomorrow, and forever.
- 6. The Bible begins with paradise lost (Genesis 1-3) and ends with paradise restored (Revelation 21-22). The whole story is about God bringing His people home. You are part of that story. How does knowing the ending change how you live the middle?
