Revelation — Chapter 3

Loading ESV text...

1And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

2Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.

3Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

4Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

5He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

6He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

7And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

8I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

9Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

10Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

11Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

12Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

13He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

14And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

15I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

16So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

18I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

20Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

21To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

22He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

1And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars: I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and thou art dead.

2Be thou watchful, and establish the things that remain, which were ready to die: for I have found no works of thine perfected before my God.

3Remember therefore how thou hast received and didst hear; and keep [it], and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

4But thou hast a few names in Sardis that did not defile their garments: and they shall walk with me in white; for they are worthy.

5He that overcometh shall thus be arrayed in white garments; and I will in no wise blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

6He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches.

7And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth and none shall shut, and that shutteth and none openeth:

8I know thy works (behold, I have set before thee a door opened, which none can shut), that thou hast a little power, and didst keep my word, and didst not deny my name.

9Behold, I give of the synagogue of Satan, of them that say they are Jews, and they are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

10Because thou didst keep the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of trial, that [hour] which is to come upon the whole world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

11I come quickly: hold fast that which thou hast, that no one take thy crown.

12He that overcometh, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go out thence no more: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God, and mine own new name.

13He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches.

14And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God:

15I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

16So because thou art lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spew thee out of my mouth.

17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art the wretched one and miserable and poor and blind and naked:

18I counsel thee to buy of me gold refined by fire, that thou mayest become rich; and white garments, that thou mayest clothe thyself, and [that] the shame of thy nakedness be not made manifest; and eyesalve to anoint thine eyes, that thou mayest see.

19As many as I love, I reprove and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

20Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

21He that overcometh, I will give to him to sit down with me in my throne, as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father in his throne.

22He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches.

1“To the angel of the church in Sardis write the following: “This is the solemn pronouncement of the one who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars: ‘I know your deeds, that you have a reputation that you are alive, but in reality you are dead.

2Wake up then, and strengthen what remains that was about to die, because I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God.

3Therefore, remember what you received and heard, and obey it, and repent. If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will never know at what hour I will come against you.

4But you have a few individuals in Sardis who have not stained their clothes, and they will walk with me dressed in white because they are worthy.

5The one who conquers will be dressed like them in white clothing, and I will never erase his name from the book of life, but will declare his name before my Father and before his angels.

6The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

7“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write the following: “This is the solemn pronouncement of the Holy One, the True One, who holds the key of David, who opens doors no one can shut, and shuts doors no one can open:

8‘I know your deeds. (Look! I have put in front of you an open door that no one can shut.) I know that you have little strength, but you have obeyed my word and have not denied my name.

9Listen! I am going to make those people from the synagogue of Satan—who say they are Jews yet are not, but are lying—look, I will make them come and bow down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you.

10Because you have kept my admonition to endure steadfastly, I will also keep you from the hour of testing that is about to come on the whole world to test those who live on the earth.

11I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have so that no one can take away your crown.

12The one who conquers I will make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he will never depart from it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God (the new Jerusalem that comes down out of heaven from my God), and my new name as well.

13The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

14“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write the following: “This is the solemn pronouncement of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the originator of God’s creation:

15‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot!

16So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth!

17Because you say, “I am rich and have acquired great wealth, and need nothing,” but do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked,

18take my advice and buy gold from me refined by fire so you can become rich! Buy from me white clothing so you can be clothed and your shameful nakedness will not be exposed, and buy eye salve to put on your eyes so you can see!

19All those I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent!

20Listen! I am standing at the door and knocking! If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come into his home and share a meal with him, and he with me.

21I will grant the one who conquers permission to sit with me on my throne, just as I, too, conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

22The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

1“And to the angel of the assembly in Sardis write: “He who has the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars says these things: “I know your works, that you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

2Wake up, and keep the things that remain, which you were about to throw away, for I have found no works of yours perfected before my God.

3Remember therefore how you have received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If therefore you won’t watch, I will come as a thief, and you won’t know what hour I will come upon you.

4Nevertheless you have a few names in Sardis that did not defile their garments. They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.

5He who overcomes will be arrayed in white garments, and I will in no way blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

6He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.

7“To the angel of the assembly in Philadelphia write: “He who is holy, he who is true, he who has the key of David, he who opens and no one can shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says these things:

8“I know your works (behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one can shut), that you have a little power, and kept my word, and didn’t deny my name.

9Behold, I give some of the synagogue of Satan, of those who say they are Jews, and they are not, but lie. Behold, I will make them to come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.

10Because you kept my command to endure, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, which is to come on the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.

11I am coming quickly! Hold firmly that which you have, so that no one takes your crown.

12He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he will go out from there no more. I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from my God, and my own new name.

13He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.

14“To the angel of the assembly in Laodicea write: “The Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of God’s creation, says these things:

15“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot.

16So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of my mouth.

17Because you say, ‘I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing;’ and don’t know that you are the wretched one, miserable, poor, blind, and naked;

18I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, that you may become rich; and white garments, that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see.

19As many as I love, I reprove and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent.

20Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me.

21He who overcomes, I will give to him to sit down with me on my throne, as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father on his throne.

22He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.”

Summary

Jesus addresses three more churches: Sardis (dead reputation, alive in name only), Philadelphia (faithful with little strength, given an open door), and Laodicea (lukewarm, wretched and blind) — "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock."

Authorship & Background

Author: The Apostle John, recording Christ's direct words to three churches (see Chapter 1 notes for full details).
Historical Context: Chapter 3 completes the seven letters with Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. These three represent common church conditions: Sardis is dead (reputation without reality), Philadelphia is faithful (small but true), and Laodicea is lukewarm (self-satisfied but spiritually bankrupt). The Laodicean letter contains one of the most famous verses in Scripture: "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock" (v.20).
Sardis (vv.1-6): The dead church. "Thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead" (v.1). Reputation without reality. Command: wake up, strengthen what remains, remember, hold fast, repent (vv.2-3). A few faithful remain (v.4). Promise: white garments, name in the book of life, confessed before the Father (v.5).
Philadelphia (vv.7-13): The faithful church. No rebuke — only commendation and promise. Christ holds the key of David — He opens and shuts (v.7). "I have set before thee an open door" (v.8). They have "a little strength" but kept His word and didn't deny His name (v.8). Promise: kept from the hour of trial (v.10), made a pillar in God's temple, inscribed with God's name (v.12).
Laodicea (vv.14-22): The lukewarm church. "Neither cold nor hot... lukewarm" (vv.15-16). Self-deceived: "I am rich... and have need of nothing" — actually "wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked" (v.17). Counsel: buy gold, white garments, and eye salve from Christ (v.18). "I stand at the door, and knock" (v.20). Promise: sit with Christ on His throne (v.21).

Map & Geography

  • Sardis (v.1, v.4): City in Asia Minor; one of the seven churches in Revelation.
  • Philadelphia (v.7): City in Asia Minor; one of the seven churches in Revelation.
  • Jerusalem (v.12): Capital of Judah; the holy city where the Temple stood.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik covers each church with historical context, spiritual diagnosis, Christ's counsel, and promises to overcomers.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "Christ at the Door" on v.20 (MTP Vol. 9, No. 536) "Behold — look, pay attention. I STAND — present tense, right now. At the DOOR — not far away but at your door. And KNOCK — actively seeking entrance. If any man HEAR — it requires attention. And OPEN — it requires action. I will COME IN — He enters. And will SUP with him — intimate fellowship, shared meal. This is Christ's posture toward the lukewarm church: not abandonment but pursuit. He stands outside and knocks. He will not force the door — but He will not stop knocking." Sermon: "Lukewarmness" on vv.15-16 (MTP Vol. 20, No. 1185) "Neither cold nor hot — the worst possible condition. Cold water refreshes; hot water heals. But lukewarm water nauseates. It is good for nothing. Laodicea was comfortable, wealthy, self-satisfied — and spiritually revolting to Christ. Comfort is the enemy of passion. Wealth is the enemy of dependence. Self-satisfaction is the enemy of growth. Better to be cold (at least honest) than lukewarm (self-deceived)."

Reflection

  • 1. Sardis: "A name that thou livest, and art dead" (v.1). Is there a gap between your reputation and your reality? Do people think you're more spiritual than you actually are? What needs to come alive?
  • 2. Philadelphia: "An open door, and no man can shut it" (v.8). What doors has God opened for you? Are you walking through them? Even with "little strength," faithfulness matters more than power.
  • 3. Laodicea: "Neither cold nor hot" (v.15). Are you lukewarm — comfortable, self-sufficient, going through the motions? What would it take to become hot again — passionate, dependent, alive?
  • 4. "Thou sayest, I am rich... and knowest not that thou art wretched" (v.17). Where might you be self-deceived about your spiritual condition? Are you truly as healthy as you think?
  • 5. "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock" (v.20). Is Christ outside your life, knocking? Have you shut Him out through busyness, self-sufficiency, or lukewarmness? Will you open the door today?
  • 6. Which of the seven churches (chs.2-3) most describes your current spiritual condition? What is Christ saying to you through that letter?
