Jeremiah — Chapter 10

1Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

2Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

3For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.

4They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

5They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.

6Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

7Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.

8But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.

9Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.

10But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

11Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.

12He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

13When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.

14Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

15They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

16The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.

17Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.

18For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.

19Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it.

20My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.

21For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.

22Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.

23O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

24O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

25Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.

1Hear ye the word which Jehovah speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

2thus saith Jehovah, Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the nations are dismayed at them.

3For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the axe.

4They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

5They are like a palm-tree, of turned work, and speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.

6There is none like unto thee, O Jehovah; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

7Who should not fear thee, O King of the nations? for to thee doth it appertain; forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is none like unto thee.

8But they are together brutish and foolish: the instruction of idols! it is but a stock.

9There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the artificer and of the hands of the goldsmith; blue and purple for their clothing; they are all the work of skilful men.

10But Jehovah is the true God; he is the living God, and an everlasting King: at his wrath the earth trembleth, and the nations are not able to abide his indignation.

11Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these shall perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.

12He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding hath he stretched out the heavens:

13when he uttereth his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasuries.

14Every man is become brutish [and is] without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

15They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

16The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance: Jehovah of hosts is his name.

17Gather up thy wares out of the land, O thou that abidest in the siege.

18For thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and will distress them, that they may feel [it].

19Woe is me because of my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is [my] grief, and I must bear it.

20My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth from me, and they are not: there is none to spread my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.

21For the shepherds are become brutish, and have not inquired of Jehovah: therefore they have not prospered, and all their flocks are scattered.

22The voice of tidings, behold, it cometh, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a dwelling-place of jackals.

23O Jehovah, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

24O Jehovah, correct me, but in measure: not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

25Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have devoured Jacob, yea, they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation.

1You people of Israel, listen to what the Lord has to say to you.

2The Lord says: “Do not start following pagan religious practices. Do not be in awe of signs that occur in the sky even though the nations hold them in awe.

3For the religion of these people is worthless. They cut down a tree in the forest, and a craftsman makes it into an idol with his tools.

4He decorates it with overlays of silver and gold. He uses hammer and nails to fasten it together so that it will not fall over.

5Such idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field. They cannot talk. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them because they cannot hurt you. And they do not have any power to help you.”

6I said, “There is no one like you, Lord. You are great, and you are renowned for your power.

7Everyone should revere you, O King of all nations, because you deserve to be revered. For there is no one like you among any of the wise people of the nations nor among any of their kings.

8The people of those nations are both stupid and foolish. Instruction from a wooden idol is worthless!

9Hammered-out silver is brought from Tarshish and gold is brought from Ufaz to cover those idols. They are the handiwork of carpenters and goldsmiths. They are clothed in blue and purple clothes. They are all made by skillful workers.

10The Lord is the only true God. He is the living God and the everlasting King. When he shows his anger, the earth shakes. None of the nations can stand up to his fury.

11You people of Israel should tell those nations this: ‘These gods did not make heaven and earth. They will disappear from the earth and from under the heavens.’

12The Lord is the one who by his power made the earth. He is the one who by his wisdom established the world. And by his understanding, he spread out the skies.

13When his voice thunders, the heavenly ocean roars. He makes the clouds rise from the far-off horizons. He makes the lightning flash out in the midst of the rain. He unleashes the wind from the places where he stores it.

14All these idolaters will prove to be stupid and ignorant. Every goldsmith will be disgraced by the idol he made. For the image he forges is merely a sham. There is no breath in any of those idols.

15They are worthless, mere objects to be mocked. When the time comes to punish them, they will be destroyed.

16The Lord, who is the inheritance of Jacob’s descendants, is not like them. He is the one who created everything. And the people of Israel are those he claims as his own. His name is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”

17“Gather your belongings together and prepare to leave the land, you people of Jerusalem who are being besieged.

18For the Lord says, ‘I will now throw out those who live in this land. I will bring so much trouble on them that they will actually feel it.’

19And I cried out, ‘We are doomed! Our wound is severe!’ We once thought, ‘This is only an illness. And we will be able to bear it.’

20But our tents have been destroyed. The ropes that held them in place have been ripped apart. Our children are gone and are not coming back. There is no survivor to put our tents back up, no one left to hang their tent curtains in place.

21For our leaders are stupid. They have not sought the Lord’s advice. So they do not act wisely, and the people they are responsible for have all been scattered.

22Listen! News is coming even now. The rumble of a great army is heard approaching from a land in the north. It is coming to turn the towns of Judah into rubble, places where only jackals live.

23Lord, we know that people do not control their own destiny. It is not in their power to determine what will happen to them.

24Correct us, Lord, but only in due measure. Do not punish us in anger, or you will reduce us to nothing.

25Vent your anger on the nations that do not acknowledge you. Vent it on the peoples who do not worship you. For they have destroyed the people of Jacob. They have completely destroyed them and left their homeland in utter ruin.”

1Hear the word which Yahweh speaks to you, house of Israel!

2Yahweh says, “Don’t learn the way of the nations, and don’t be dismayed at the signs of the sky; for the nations are dismayed at them.

3For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the ax.

4They deck it with silver and with gold. They fasten it with nails and with hammers, so that it can’t move.

5They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don’t speak. They must be carried, because they can’t move. Don’t be afraid of them; for they can’t do evil, neither is it in them to do good.”

6There is no one like you, Yahweh. You are great, and your name is great in might.

7Who shouldn’t fear you, King of the nations? For it belongs to you. Because among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is no one like you.

8But they are together brutish and foolish, instructed by idols! It is just wood.

9There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the engraver and of the hands of the goldsmith. Their clothing is blue and purple. They are all the work of skillful men.

10But Yahweh is the true God. He is the living God, and an everlasting King. At his wrath, the earth trembles. The nations aren’t able to withstand his indignation.

11“You shall say this to them: ‘The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.’”

12God has made the earth by his power. He has established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens.

13When he utters his voice, the waters in the heavens roar, and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes lightnings for the rain, and brings the wind out of his treasuries.

14Every man has become brutish and without knowledge. Every goldsmith is disappointed by his engraved image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

15They are vanity, a work of delusion. In the time of their visitation they will perish.

16The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the maker of all things; and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance: Yahweh of Armies is his name.

17Gather up your wares out of the land, you who live under siege.

18For Yahweh says, “Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and will distress them, that they may feel it.”

19Woe is me because of my injury! My wound is serious; but I said, “Truly this is my grief, and I must bear it.”

20My tent has been destroyed, and all my cords are broken. My children have gone away from me, and they are no more. There is no one to spread my tent any more, to set up my curtains.

21For the shepherds have become brutish, and have not inquired of Yahweh. Therefore they have not prospered, and all their flocks have scattered.

22The voice of news, behold, it comes, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a dwelling place of jackals.

23Yahweh, I know that the way of man is not in himself. It is not in man who walks to direct his steps.

24Yahweh, correct me, but gently; not in your anger, lest you reduce me to nothing.

25Pour out your wrath on the nations that don’t know you, and on the families that don’t call on your name; for they have devoured Jacob. Yes, they have devoured him, consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation.

Summary

A devastating satire on idol-making (a tree is cut, carved, decorated with silver and gold, and nailed down so it won't topple — yet it can't speak, walk, or help). Contrasted with the living God who made the heavens and earth. Jeremiah prays for mercy and pours out judgment on the nations that devour Jacob.

Authorship & Background

Author: Jeremiah son of Hilkiah (see Chapter 1 notes for full details).
Classification: Prophetic Oracle — Idol Satire + Doxology Key Themes: The absurdity of idol-worship, the incomparable living God, "there is none like thee," idols as scarecrows, God as Creator vs. manufactured gods, Jeremiah's prayer for correction in measure
Historical Context: Like Isaiah 44, this chapter exposes the manufacturing process of idols — from tree to "god" — showing the absurdity at each step. The contrast with Yahweh is stark: idols are MADE (by humans); God MAKES (the heavens, earth, weather). Idols must be CARRIED; God CARRIES. Idols are SILENT; God speaks. The doxology (vv.6-7, 10-16) may have been used in worship — a confession of Yahweh's uniqueness. The chapter ends with Jeremiah's personal prayer (vv.23-25): "Correct me, but in measure — not in your anger."
Structure:
  • Don't Learn Pagan Ways (vv.1-2)
  • Idol-Making Satire: Silver, Gold, and Nails (vv.3-5)
  • There Is None Like Thee, O LORD (vv.6-7)
  • Idols: The Work of Craftsmen (vv.8-9)
  • The Living God: Creator of All (vv.10-16)
  • Warning: Prepare for Exile (vv.17-18)
  • Jeremiah's Lament: Shepherds Are Stupid (vv.19-22)
  • Prayer: Correct Me in Measure (vv.23-25)

Map & Geography

  • Tarshish (v.9): Distant port city (possibly Spain); represents the farthest reaches of the known world.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com
  • Charles Spurgeon: "'The way of man is not in himself.' This is liberating, not terrifying. If you can't direct your own steps — GOOD. The God who made the earth by His power and stretched the heavens by His discretion is MORE than capable of directing your life. Let Him."

Reflection

  • 1. Idols are scarecrows (v.5). Whatever you fear or worship that isn't God — it's a scarecrow. It CAN'T hurt you, CAN'T help you. Stop being intimidated by what has no power.
  • 2. "There is none like thee" (v.6). The living God is in a category of ONE. Nothing you compare Him to is adequate. Nothing you substitute for Him is equivalent. He's incomparable.
  • 3. "The way of man is not in himself" (v.23). You CANNOT direct your own life successfully. Self-guidance is an illusion. Surrender the steering wheel. Acknowledge your need for God's direction — it's not weakness, it's wisdom.
  • 4. "Correct me, but with judgment" (v.24). The mature prayer isn't "don't discipline me" — it's "discipline me proportionally." If you're being corrected by God, thank Him for the MEASURE. He could destroy; He chose to calibrate.
  • 5. True, living, everlasting (v.10). Your God is real (not imagined), alive (not dead religion), and eternal (not temporary). Does your relationship with Him reflect all three? Or have you reduced Him to a dead, temporary idea?
