John — Chapter 14

1Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
4And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
5Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
7If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
8Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
9Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
10Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
11Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.
12Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
13And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
15If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
19Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
20At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
21He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
22Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
23Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
24He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.
25These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
26But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
27Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
28Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
29And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.
30Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
31But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
1Let not your heart be troubled: believe in God, believe also in me.
2In my Father`s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.

12Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater [works] than these shall he do; because I go unto the Father.
13And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

17[even] the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it beholdeth him not, neither knoweth him: ye know him; for he abideth with you, and shall be in you.
18I will not leave you desolate: I come unto you.
19Yet a little while, and the world beholdeth me no more; but ye behold me: because I live, ye shall live also.
20In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
21He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself unto him.
22Judas (not Iscariot) saith unto him, Lord, what is come to pass that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
23Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
24He that loveth me not keepeth not my words: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father`s who sent me.
25These things have I spoken unto you, while [yet] abiding with you.
26But the Comforter, [even] the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.
27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.
28Ye heard how I said to you, I go away, and I come unto you. If ye loved me, ye would have rejoiced, because I go unto the Father: for the Father is greater than I.
29And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe.
30I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world cometh: and he hath nothing in me;
31but that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
1“Do not let your hearts be distressed. You believe in God; believe also in me.
2There are many dwelling places in my Father’s house. Otherwise, I would have told you, because I am going away to make ready a place for you.
3And if I go and make ready a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with me, so that where I am you may be too.
4And you know the way where I am going.”
5Thomas said, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
6Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
7If you have known me, you will know my Father too. And from now on you do know him and have seen him.”
8Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be content.”
9Jesus replied, “Have I been with you for so long and yet you have not known me, Philip? The person who has seen me has seen the Father! How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
10Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own initiative, but the Father residing in me performs his miraculous deeds.
11Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me, but if you do not believe me, believe because of the miraculous deeds themselves.
12I tell you the solemn truth, the person who believes in me will perform the miraculous deeds that I am doing, and will perform greater deeds than these because I am going to the Father.
13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
15“If you love me, you will obey my commandments.
16Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever—
17the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept because it does not see him or know him. But you know him because he resides with you and will be in you.
18“I will not abandon you as orphans, I will come to you.
19In a little while the world will not see me any longer, but you will see me; because I live, you will live too.
20You will know at that time that I am in my Father and you are in me and I am in you.
21The person who has my commandments and obeys them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will reveal myself to him.”
22“Lord,” Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “what has happened that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?”
23Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him.
24The person who does not love me does not obey my words. And the word you hear is not mine, but the Father’s who sent me.
25“I have spoken these things while staying with you.
26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and will cause you to remember everything I said to you.
27“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; I do not give it to you as the world does. Do not let your hearts be distressed or lacking in courage.
28You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father because the Father is greater than I am.
29I have told you now before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe.
30I will not speak with you much longer, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me,
31but I am doing just what the Father commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Get up, let us go from here.
1“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me.
2In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you.
3If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also.
4Where I go, you know, and you know the way.”
5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.
7If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him, and have seen him.”
8Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
9Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father?’
10Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works.
11Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me; or else believe me for the very works’ sake.
12Most certainly I tell you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and he will do greater works than these, because I am going to my Father.
13Whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it.
15If you love me, keep my commandments.
16I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever,—
17the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him, neither knows him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you.
18I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.
19Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more; but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also.
20In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
21One who has my commandments, and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him.”
22Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, what has happened that you are about to reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?”
23Jesus answered him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him.
24He who doesn’t love me doesn’t keep my words. The word which you hear isn’t mine, but the Father’s who sent me.
25I have said these things to you, while still living with you.
26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.
27Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.
28You heard how I told you, ‘I go away, and I come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I said ‘I am going to my Father;’ for the Father is greater than I.
29Now I have told you before it happens so that, when it happens, you may believe.
30I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world comes, and he has nothing in me.
31But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father commanded me, even so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik examines the meaning of "mansions" (dwelling places), the exclusive claim of v.6, the nature of the Paraclete, and the meaning of "greater works" in v.12.
- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Way, the Truth, and the Life" on v.6 (MTP Vol. 20, No. 1176) "He is the Way — not a way, not one of many ways — the Way. He is the Truth — not a teacher of truth but Truth itself. He is the Life — not a giver of life but Life itself. And no man comes to the Father but by Him. This is not narrow-mindedness; it is the nature of reality." Sermon: "Peace — Perfect Peace" on v.27 (MTP Vol. 22, No. 1273) "Not as the world gives. The world's peace is a truce — a temporary ceasefire. Christ's peace is a treaty — permanent, based on the finished work of the cross. It is not the absence of trouble; it is the presence of Christ in the trouble."

Reflection
- 1. "Let not your heart be troubled" (v.1) — this is a command. Anxiety is addressed by a choice to trust. Jesus doesn't say "don't feel troubled" — He says "don't let your heart be troubled." What is troubling your heart right now? What would it look like to actively choose trust over anxiety?
- 2. "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (v.6). In a culture that says all paths lead to God, Jesus says there is one way. As a man, how do you hold this conviction with both confidence and compassion — firm in truth, gentle with people?
- 3. "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (v.15). Love for Christ is not primarily a feeling — it is demonstrated through obedience. What commandment of Christ are you currently struggling to keep? What does that struggle reveal about where your love is?
- 4. "My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth" (v.27). The world's peace requires good circumstances. Christ's peace exists in the middle of bad ones. Are you experiencing His peace right now, or are you dependent on circumstances being right before you feel at peace?
- 5. Jesus said "I go to prepare a place for you" (v.2). Heaven is a prepared place for prepared people. How much does the reality of heaven shape your daily priorities and decisions? Does eternity feel real to you?
- 6. Thomas said "We don't know where you're going, so how can we know the way?" (v.5). He was honest about his confusion. Are you honest with God about what you don't understand? What questions about faith are you carrying that you haven't brought to Him?
- 7. Philip said "Show us the Father and that will be enough" (v.8). Jesus responded with gentle rebuke — "Have I been with you so long and you still don't know me?" After years of following Christ, how well do you actually know Him? Is your relationship growing deeper or staying surface level?
- 8. Jesus promised "greater works than these shall he do" (v.12) — referring to the spread of the Gospel through the church. The "greater works" are not bigger miracles but wider reach. How are you participating in the spread of the Gospel? What is your role in the "greater works"?
- 9. "The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me" (v.30). Jesus faced the cross with total integrity — Satan had no foothold in Him. What footholds does the enemy have in your life? What needs to be surrendered so that he has nothing in you?
