John — Chapter 6

1After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.

2And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

3And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.

4And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.

5When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

6And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

7Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.

8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him,

9There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

10And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

11And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

12When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.

13Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

14Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

15When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

16And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,

17And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

18And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.

19So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.

20But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.

21Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

22The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;

23(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)

24When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.

25And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

26Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

27Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

28Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

29Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

30They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

31Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

32Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

33For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

34Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

35And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

36But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

37All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

38For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

39And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

40And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

41The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.

42And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?

43Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.

44No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

45It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

46Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.

47Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

48I am that bread of life.

49Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.

50This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

51I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

52The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

53Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

54Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

55For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

56He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

57As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

58This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

59These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

60Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

61When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?

62What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

63It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

64But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

65And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

66From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

67Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

68Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

69And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

70Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?

71He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

1After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is [the sea] of Tiberias.

2And a great multitude followed him, because they beheld the signs which he did on them that were sick.

3And Jesus went up into the mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.

4Now the passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.

5Jesus therefore lifting up his eyes, and seeing that a great multitude cometh unto him, saith unto Philip, Whence are we to buy bread, that these may eat?

6And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

7Philip answered him, Two hundred shillings` worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little.

8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter`s brother, saith unto him,

9There is a lad here, who hath five barley loaves, and two fishes: but what are these among so many?

10Jesus said, Make the people sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

11Jesus therefore took the loaves; and having given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down; likewise also of the fishes as much as they would.

12And when they were filled, he saith unto his disciples, Gather up the broken pieces which remain over, that nothing be lost.

13So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which remained over unto them that had eaten.

14When therefore the people saw the sign which he did, they said, This is of a truth the prophet that cometh into the world.

15Jesus therefore perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force, to make him king, withdrew again into the mountain himself alone.

16And when evening came, his disciples went down unto the sea;

17and they entered into a boat, and were going over the sea unto Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.

18And the sea was rising by reason of a great wind that blew.

19When therefore they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they behold Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the boat: and they were afraid.

20But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.

21They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat: and straightway the boat was at the land whither they were going.

22On the morrow the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, save one, and that Jesus entered not with his disciples into the boat, but [that] his disciples went away alone

23(howbeit there came boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks):

24when the multitude therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they themselves got into the boats, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

25And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

26Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were filled.

27Work not for the food which perisheth, but for the food which abideth unto eternal life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him the Father, even God, hath sealed.

28They said therefore unto him, What must we do, that we may work the works of God?

29Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

30They said therefore unto him, What then doest thou for a sign, that we may see, and believe thee? what workest thou?

31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.

32Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, It was not Moses that gave you the bread out of heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread out of heaven.

33For the bread of God is that which cometh down out of heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

34They said therefore unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

35Jesus said unto them. I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

36But I said unto you, that ye have seen me, and yet believe not.

37All that which the Father giveth me shall come unto me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

38For I am come down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

39And this is the will of him that sent me, that of all that which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.

40For this is the will of my Father, that every one that beholdeth the Son, and believeth on him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

41The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said, I am the bread which came down out of heaven.

42And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how doth he now say, I am come down out of heaven?

43Jesus answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.

44No man can come to me, except the Father that sent me draw him: and I will raise him up in the last day.

45It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard from the Father, and hath learned, cometh unto me.

46Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he that is from God, he hath seen the Father.

47Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth hath eternal life.

48I am the bread of life.

49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.

50This is the bread which cometh down out of heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

51I am the living bread which came down out of heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: yea and the bread which I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.

52The Jews therefore strove one with another, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

53Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, ye have not life in yourselves.

54He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

55For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

56He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood abideth in me, and I in him.

57As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he that eateth me, he also shall live because of me.

58This is the bread which came down out of heaven: not as the fathers ate, and died; he that eateth this bread shall live for ever.

59These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

60Many therefore of his disciples, when the heard [this], said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?

61But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said unto them, Doth this cause you to stumble?

62[What] then if ye should behold the Son of man ascending where he was before?

63It is the spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I have spoken unto you are spirit, are are life.

64But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who it was that should betray him.

65And he said, For this cause have I said unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it be given unto him of the Father.

66Upon this many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

67Jesus said therefore unto the twelve, Would ye also go away?

68Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

69And we have believed and know that thou art the Holy One of God.

70Jesus answered them, Did not I choose you the twelve, and one of you is a devil?

71Now he spake of Judas [the son] of Simon Iscariot, for he it was that should betray him, [being] one of the twelve.

1After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (also called the Sea of Tiberias).

2A large crowd was following him because they were observing the miraculous signs he was performing on the sick.

3So Jesus went on up the mountainside and sat down there with his disciples.

4(Now the Jewish Feast of the Passover was near.)

5Then Jesus, when he looked up and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread so that these people may eat?”

6(Now Jesus said this to test him, for he knew what he was going to do.)

7Philip replied, “200 silver coins worth of bread would not be enough for them, for each one to get a little.”

8One of Jesus’ disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,

9“Here is a boy who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what good are these for so many people?”

10Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” (Now there was a lot of grass in that place.) So the men sat down, about 5,000 in number.

11Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed the bread to those who were seated. He then did the same with the fish, as much as they wanted.

12When they were all satisfied, Jesus said to his disciples, “Gather up the broken pieces that are left over, so that nothing is wasted.”

13So they gathered them up and filled 12 baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves left over by the people who had eaten.

14Now when the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus performed, they began to say to one another, “This is certainly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

15Then Jesus, because he knew they were going to come and seize him by force to make him king, withdrew again up the mountainside alone.

16Now when evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,

17got into a boat, and started to cross the lake to Capernaum. (It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.)

18By now a strong wind was blowing and the sea was getting rough.

19Then, when they had rowed about three or four miles, they caught sight of Jesus walking on the lake, approaching the boat, and they were frightened.

20But he said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.”

21Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat came to the land where they had been heading.

22The next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the lake realized that only one small boat had been there, and that Jesus had not boarded it with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.

23Other boats from Tiberias came to shore near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

24So when the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

25When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

26Jesus replied, “I tell you the solemn truth, you are looking for me not because you saw miraculous signs, but because you ate all the loaves of bread you wanted.

27Do not work for the food that disappears, but for the food that remains to eternal life—the food which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has put his seal of approval on him.”

28So then they said to him, “What must we do to accomplish the deeds God requires?”

29Jesus replied, “This is the deed God requires—to believe in the one whom he sent.”

30So they said to him, “Then what miraculous sign will you perform, so that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?

31Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

32Then Jesus told them, “I tell you the solemn truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but my Father is giving you the true bread from heaven.

33For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34So they said to him, “Sir, give us this bread all the time!”

35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. The one who comes to me will never go hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty.

36But I told you that you have seen me and still do not believe.

37Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never send away.

38For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.

39Now this is the will of the one who sent me—that I should not lose one person of every one he has given me, but raise them all up at the last day.

40For this is the will of my Father—for everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him to have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

41Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesus began complaining about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,”

42and they said, “Isn’t this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”

43Jesus replied, “Do not complain about me to one another.

44No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.

45It is written in the prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who hears and learns from the Father comes to me.

46(Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God—he has seen the Father.)

47I tell you the solemn truth, the one who believes has eternal life.

48I am the bread of life.

49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.

50This is the bread that has come down from heaven, so that a person may eat from it and not die.

51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

52Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesus began to argue with one another, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53Jesus said to them, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in yourselves.

54The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.

56The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood resides in me, and I in him.

57Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so the one who consumes me will live because of me.

58This is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the bread your ancestors ate, but then later died. The one who eats this bread will live forever.”

59Jesus said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

60Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things, said, “This is a difficult saying! Who can understand it?”

61When Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining about this, he said to them, “Does this cause you to be offended?

62Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before?

63The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help! The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.

64But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had already known from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)

65So Jesus added, “Because of this I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has allowed him to come.”

66After this many of his disciples quit following him and did not accompany him any longer.

67So Jesus said to the twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?”

68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.

69We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God!”

70Jesus replied, “Didn’t I choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is the devil?”

71(Now he said this about Judas son of Simon Iscariot, for Judas, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.)

1After these things, Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is also called the Sea of Tiberias.

2A great multitude followed him, because they saw his signs which he did on those who were sick.

3Jesus went up into the mountain, and he sat there with his disciples.

4Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.

5Jesus therefore lifting up his eyes, and seeing that a great multitude was coming to him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, that these may eat?”

6This he said to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.

7Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that everyone of them may receive a little.”

8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,

9“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these among so many?”

13So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten.

14When therefore the people saw the sign which Jesus did, they said, “This is truly the prophet who comes into the world.”

15Jesus therefore, perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force, to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,

17and they entered into the boat, and were going over the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them.

18The sea was tossed by a great wind blowing.

19When therefore they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near to the boat; and they were afraid.

20But he said to them, “It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

21They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat. Immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

22On the next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except the one in which his disciples had embarked, and that Jesus hadn’t entered with his disciples into the boat, but his disciples had gone away alone.

23However boats from Tiberias came near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

24When the multitude therefore saw that Jesus wasn’t there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

25When they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”

26Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled.

27Don’t work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.”

28They said therefore to him, “What must we do, that we may work the works of God?”

29Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

30They said therefore to him, “What then do you do for a sign, that we may see, and believe you? What work do you do?

31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness. As it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’”

33For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.”

34They said therefore to him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”

35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

36But I told you that you have seen me, and yet you don’t believe.

37All those whom the Father gives me will come to me. He who comes to me I will in no way throw out.

38For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

39This is the will of my Father who sent me, that of all he has given to me I should lose nothing, but should raise him up at the last day.

40This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son, and believes in him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

41The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said, “I am the bread which came down out of heaven.”

42They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say, ‘I have come down out of heaven?’”

43Therefore Jesus answered them, “Don’t murmur among yourselves.

44No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up in the last day.

45It is written in the prophets, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who hears from the Father, and has learned, comes to me.

46Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God. He has seen the Father.

47Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life.

48I am the bread of life.

49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.

50This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die.

51I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

52The Jews therefore contended with one another, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53Jesus therefore said to them, “Most certainly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don’t have life in yourselves.

54He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

55For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

56He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him.

57As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he who feeds on me, he will also live because of me.

58This is the bread which came down out of heaven—not as our fathers ate the manna, and died. He who eats this bread will live forever.”

59He said these things in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

60Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying! Who can listen to it?”

61But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble?

62Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?

63It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.

64But there are some of you who don’t believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who didn’t believe, and who it was who would betray him.

65He said, “For this cause I have said to you that no one can come to me, unless it is given to him by my Father.”

66At this, many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

67Jesus said therefore to the twelve, “You don’t also want to go away, do you?”

68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.

69We have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

70Jesus answered them, “Didn’t I choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?”

71Now he spoke of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for it was he who would betray him, being one of the twelve.

Summary

Jesus feeds five thousand, walks on water, and delivers the Bread of Life discourse — "I am the bread of life; he that cometh to me shall never hunger" — causing many disciples to turn back while Peter confesses "Thou hast the words of eternal life."

Authorship & Background

Author: The Apostle John (see Chapter 1 notes for full authorship details).
Historical Context: Chapter 6 is the longest chapter in John's Gospel and contains two of Jesus' most dramatic miracles — feeding 5,000 men (plus women and children) and walking on water — followed by His most controversial teaching: the Bread of Life discourse. The chapter ends with mass defection from His followers and Peter's great confession.
Feeding the 5,000: The only miracle (besides the resurrection) recorded in all four Gospels. It took place near the Sea of Galilee (also called the Sea of Tiberias) shortly before Passover. The crowd's response — wanting to make Jesus king by force (v.15) — reveals they wanted a political messiah who would feed them and overthrow Rome, not a spiritual Savior who would die for their sins.
The Bread of Life Discourse: Delivered in the synagogue at Capernaum (v.59), this teaching was so hard for many followers that they left (v.66). Jesus deliberately did not soften it to keep the crowd. He was separating those who followed for bread from those who followed in genuine faith.

Map & Geography

  • The Sea of Galilee / Sea of Tiberias (v.1): The feeding of the 5,000 occurred on the northeast shore near Bethsaida. Jesus walked on the water crossing to Capernaum.
  • Capernaum / the synagogue (v.59): The Bread of Life discourse was delivered in the synagogue at Capernaum.
  • Tiberias (v.23): A city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, built by Herod Antipas. Boats from Tiberias came near where the miracle occurred.

  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Bread of Life" on v.35 (MTP Vol. 27, No. 1597) "He that cometh to Me shall never hunger. Never — not sometimes, not usually, not in most cases — never. The soul that has truly come to Christ has found that which satisfies every craving of the human spirit. Nothing else will do it. Everything else has been tried and found wanting." Sermon: "Sovereign Grace and Man's Responsibility" on v.37 (MTP Vol. 10) "All that the Father gives Me shall come — sovereignty. Him that comes I will not cast out — free invitation. Both truths stand. Hold them both."

Reflection

  • 1. The crowd followed Jesus because He fed them (v.26), not because of who He was. It's easy to follow Jesus when He's giving you what you want. What happens to your faith when He doesn't? What are you really following Him for?
  • 2. Jesus said "him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out" (v.37). No matter what you've done, no matter how far you've wandered — if you come to Him, He will not turn you away. Do you believe that for yourself?
  • 3. Many disciples walked away when the teaching got hard (v.66). Jesus didn't chase them or soften the message. He turned to the twelve and asked "Will you also go away?" As a man, when following Christ costs you something — relationships, reputation, comfort — what is your answer to that question?
  • 4. Peter said "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (v.68). This is not blind loyalty — it's reasoned conviction. Peter had looked at every alternative and concluded there was none. Have you reached that same conclusion? What would it take?
  • 5. Jesus tested Philip by asking where they would buy bread, "for he himself knew what he would do" (v.6). God often allows us to face impossible situations He already has a plan for. How does knowing God tests us with problems He already has answers to change how you face difficulties?
  • 6. The boy gave his five loaves and two fish — everything he had — and Jesus multiplied it. What small, seemingly insufficient thing do you have that God might want you to place in His hands?
  • 7. After the feeding, the crowd wanted to make Jesus king by force (v.15). They wanted a Jesus who served their agenda. In what ways are you tempted to shape Jesus into the kind of Savior you want rather than accepting Him as He is?
  • 8. Jesus said "No man can come to me, except the Father draw him" (v.44). If you are a believer, God drew you to Christ. How does that truth affect your gratitude, your humility, and your confidence in your salvation?
  • 9. When many disciples left, Jesus asked the twelve "Will you also go away?" Peter answered for himself — not for the group. Your faith is personal. If Jesus asked you that question today, what would your honest answer be?
