1Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.

2And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.

3And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,

4They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.

5Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

6This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

7So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

8And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

9And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

10When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?

11She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

12Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

13The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.

14Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.

15Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.

16And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.

17It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.

18I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.

19Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.

20These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.

21Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.

22Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.

23And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.

24I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

25Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.

26I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.

27They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.

28Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

29And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

30As he spake these words, many believed on him.

31Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

33They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

35And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.

36If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

37I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

38I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.

39They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

40But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

41Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.

42Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

43Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.

44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

45And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

46Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

47He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

48Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?

49Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.

50And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.

51Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.

52Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.

53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?

54Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:

55Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.

56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.

57Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

58Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

59Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

1but Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.

2And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.

3And the scribes and the Pharisees bring a woman taken in adultery; and having set her in the midst,

4they say unto him, Teacher, this woman hath been taken in adultery, in the very act.

5Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such: what then sayest thou of her?

6And this they said, trying him, that they might have [whereof] to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.

7But when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

8And again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.

9And they, when they heard it, went out one by one, beginning from the eldest, [even] unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the midst.

10And Jesus lifted up himself, and said unto her, Woman, where are they? did no man condemn thee?

11And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn thee: go thy way; from henceforth sin no more.

12Again therefore Jesus spake unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.

13The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; thy witness is not true.

14Jesus answered and said unto them, Even if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true; for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye know not whence I come, or whither I go.

15Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.

16Yea and if I judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.

17Yea and in your law it is written, that the witness of two men is true.

18I am he that beareth witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.

19They said therefore unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me, nor my Father: if ye knew me, ye would know my Father also.

20These words spake he in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man took him; because his hour was not yet come.

21He said therefore again unto them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin: whither I go, ye cannot come.

22The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come?

23And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.

24I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.

25They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? Jesus said unto them, Even that which I have also spoken unto you from the beginning.

26I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you: howbeit he that sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these speak I unto the world.

27They perceived not that he spake to them of the Father.

28Jesus therefore said, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself, but as the Father taught me, I speak these things.

29And he that sent me is with me; he hath not left me alone; for I do always the things that are pleasing to him.

30As he spake these things, many believed on him.

31Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, [then] are ye truly my disciples;

32and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

33They answered unto him, We are Abraham`s seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin.

35And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever.

36If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

37I know that ye are Abraham`s seed: yet ye seek to kill me, because my word hath not free course in you.

38I speak the things which I have seen with [my] Father: and ye also do the things which ye heard from [your] father.

39They answered and said unto him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham`s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

40But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I heard from God: this did not Abraham.

41Ye do the works of your father. They said unto him, We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, [even] God.

42Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I came forth and am come from God; for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me.

43Why do ye not understand my speech? [Even] because ye cannot hear my word.

44Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.

45But because I say the truth, ye believe me not.

46Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth, why do ye not believe me?

47He that is of God heareth the words of God: for this cause ye hear [them] not, because ye are not of God.

48The Jews answered and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?

49Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and ye dishonor me.

50But I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.

51Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my word, he shall never see death.

52The Jews said unto him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste of death.

53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died: whom makest thou thyself?

54Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father that glorifieth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God;

55and ye have not known him: but I know him; and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be like unto you, a liar: but I know him, and keep his word.

56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; and he saw it, and was glad.

57The Jews therefore said unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

58Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I am.

59They took up stones therefore to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.

1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

2Early in the morning he came to the temple courts again. All the people came to him, and he sat down and began to teach them.

3The experts in the law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught committing adultery. They made her stand in front of them

4and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery.

5In the law Moses commanded us to stone to death such women. What then do you say?”

6(Now they were asking this in an attempt to trap him, so that they could bring charges against him.) Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger.

7When they persisted in asking him, he stood up straight and replied, “Whoever among you is guiltless may be the first to throw a stone at her.”

8Then he bent over again and wrote on the ground.

9Now when they heard this, they began to drift away one at a time, starting with the older ones, until Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.

10Jesus stood up straight and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?”

11She replied, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you either. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”]]

12Then Jesus spoke out again, “I am the light of the world! The one who follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

13So the Pharisees objected, “You testify about yourself; your testimony is not true!”

14Jesus answered, “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you people do not know where I came from or where I am going.

15You people judge by outward appearances; I do not judge anyone.

16But if I judge, my evaluation is accurate because I am not alone when I judge, but I and the Father who sent me do so together.

17It is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.

18I testify about myself and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”

19Then they began asking him, “Who is your father?” Jesus answered, “You do not know either me or my Father. If you knew me you would know my Father too.”

20(Jesus spoke these words near the offering box while he was teaching in the temple courts. No one seized him because his time had not yet come.)

21Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and you will look for me but will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come.”

22So the Jewish leaders began to say, “Perhaps he is going to kill himself because he says, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’”

23Jesus replied, “You people are from below; I am from above. You people are from this world; I am not from this world.

24Thus I told you that you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.”

25So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus replied, “What I have told you from the beginning.

26I have many things to say and to judge about you, but the Father who sent me is truthful, and the things I have heard from him I speak to the world.”

27(They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.)

28Then Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing on my own initiative, but I speak just what the Father taught me.

29And the one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone because I always do those things that please him.”

30While he was saying these things, many people believed in him.

31Then Jesus said to those Judeans who had believed him, “If you continue to follow my teaching, you are really my disciples

32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

33“We are descendants of Abraham,” they replied, “and have never been anyone’s slaves! How can you say, ‘You will become free’?”

34Jesus answered them, “I tell you the solemn truth, everyone who practices sin is a slave of sin.

35The slave does not remain in the family forever, but the son remains forever.

36So if the son sets you free, you will be really free.

37I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. But you want to kill me because my teaching makes no progress among you.

38I am telling you the things I have seen while with the Father; as for you, practice the things you have heard from the Father!”

39They answered him, “Abraham is our father!” Jesus replied, “If you are Abraham’s children, you would be doing the deeds of Abraham.

40But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth I heard from God. Abraham did not do this!

41You people are doing the deeds of your father.”Then they said to Jesus, “We were not born as a result of immorality! We have only one Father, God himself.”

42Jesus replied, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come from God and am now here. I have not come on my own initiative, but he sent me.

43Why don’t you understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot accept my teaching.

44You people are from your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not uphold the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature because he is a liar and the father of lies.

45But because I am telling you the truth, you do not believe me.

46Who among you can prove me guilty of any sin? If I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me?

47The one who belongs to God listens and responds to God’s words. You don’t listen and respond because you don’t belong to God.”

48The Judeans replied, “Aren’t we correct in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?”

49Jesus answered, “I am not possessed by a demon, but I honor my Father—and yet you dishonor me.

50I am not trying to get praise for myself. There is one who demands it, and he also judges.

51I tell you the solemn truth, if anyone obeys my teaching, he will never see death.”

52Then the Judeans responded, “Now we know you’re possessed by a demon! Both Abraham and the prophets died, and yet you say, ‘If anyone obeys my teaching, he will never experience death.’

53You aren’t greater than our father Abraham who died, are you? And the prophets died too! Who do you claim to be?”

54Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory is worthless. The one who glorifies me is my Father, about whom you people say, ‘He is our God.’

55Yet you do not know him, but I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I obey his teaching.

56Your father Abraham was overjoyed to see my day, and he saw it and was glad.”

57Then the Judeans replied, “You are not yet fifty years old! Have you seen Abraham?”

58Jesus said to them, “I tell you the solemn truth, before Abraham came into existence, I am!”

59Then they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus was hidden from them and went out from the temple area.

1but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

2Now very early in the morning, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down, and taught them.

3The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the middle,

4they told him, “Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act.

5Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. What then do you say about her?”

6They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of. But Jesus stooped down, and wrote on the ground with his finger.

7But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her.”

8Again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.

9They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle.

10Jesus, standing up, saw her and said, “Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?”

11She said, “No one, Lord.” Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more.”

12Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

13The Pharisees therefore said to him, “You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.”

14Jesus answered them, “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don’t know where I came from, or where I am going.

15You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one.

16Even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me.

17It’s also written in your law that the testimony of two people is valid.

18I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”

19They said therefore to him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me, nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”

20Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

21Jesus said therefore again to them, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sins. Where I go, you can’t come.”

22The Jews therefore said, “Will he kill himself, because he says, ‘Where I am going, you can’t come’?”

23He said to them, “You are from beneath. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world.

24I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.”

25They said therefore to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.

26I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. However he who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I say to the world.”

27They didn’t understand that he spoke to them about the Father.

28Jesus therefore said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I say these things.

29He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn’t left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”

30As he spoke these things, many believed in him.

31Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples.

32You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

33They answered him, “We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, ‘You will be made free’?”

34Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin.

35A bondservant doesn’t live in the house forever. A son remains forever.

36If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

37I know that you are Abraham’s offspring, yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you.

38I say the things which I have seen with my Father; and you also do the things which you have seen with your father.”

39They answered him, “Our father is Abraham.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.

40But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham didn’t do this.

41You do the works of your father.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God.”

42Therefore Jesus said to them, “If God were your father, you would love me, for I came out and have come from God. For I haven’t come of myself, but he sent me.

43Why don’t you understand my speech? Because you can’t hear my word.

44You are of your father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn’t stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.

45But because I tell the truth, you don’t believe me.

46Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?

47He who is of God hears the words of God. For this cause you don’t hear, because you are not of God.”

48Then the Jews answered him, “Don’t we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?”

49Jesus answered, “I don’t have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.

50But I don’t seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and judges.

51Most certainly, I tell you, if a person keeps my word, he will never see death.”

52Then the Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and you say, ‘If a man keeps my word, he will never taste of death.’

53Are you greater than our father, Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?”

54Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is our God.

55You have not known him, but I know him. If I said, ‘I don’t know him,’ I would be like you, a liar. But I know him, and keep his word.

56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. He saw it, and was glad.”

57The Jews therefore said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”

58Jesus said to them, “Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM.”

59Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus was hidden, and went out of the temple, having gone through the middle of them, and so passed by.

Summary

Jesus forgives the woman caught in adultery, declares "I am the light of the world," engages in fierce debate with the Pharisees about His identity and Abraham, and stuns them with "Before Abraham was, I AM."

Authorship & Background

Author: The Apostle John (see Chapter 1 notes for full authorship details).
Historical Context: Chapter 8 contains some of the most intense confrontations between Jesus and the religious leaders in all of Scripture. It opens with the famous account of the woman caught in adultery (vv.1-11) — a passage with complex textual history — and escalates through a series of debates about identity, freedom, and fatherhood, culminating in Jesus' most explosive claim: "Before Abraham was, I AM" (v.58), which caused the leaders to pick up stones.
The Woman Caught in Adultery (vv.1-11): This passage is absent from the oldest Greek manuscripts and is placed in brackets in most modern translations. However, it is consistent with Jesus' character and has been part of the church's Bible for centuries. The trap was designed to force Jesus to either contradict Moses (who commanded stoning) or contradict Roman law (which reserved the death penalty for Rome). Jesus' response dismantled the trap entirely.
"I AM" (v.58): When Jesus said "Before Abraham was, I AM," He used the divine name God revealed to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14). The crowd understood exactly what He was claiming — hence the immediate attempt to stone Him for blasphemy.

Map & Geography

  • Jerusalem / the Temple (v.2): Jesus was teaching in the Temple courts during or after the Feast of Tabernacles. The woman caught in adultery was brought to Him here.
  • The treasury (v.20): Jesus spoke "in the treasury" — an area in the Court of Women where offering boxes were kept and teaching often occurred.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik addresses the textual history of the adultery passage, the meaning of Jesus writing on the ground, the nature of true freedom in vv.31-36, and the significance of "I AM" in v.58.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "Neither Do I Condemn Thee" on v.11 (MTP Vol. 26, No. 1544) "He does not say 'I overlook thy sin' or 'thy sin is not so bad.' He says 'Neither do I condemn thee' — and then immediately 'go and sin no more.' Grace never minimizes sin. It forgives it and then calls us away from it." Sermon: "The Truth That Makes Men Free" on v.32 (MTP Vol. 34, No. 2007) "The truth that makes free is not philosophical truth or scientific truth — it is the truth about Jesus Christ. Reflection

  • 1. Jesus said to the woman "Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more" (v.11). He offered grace without excusing sin. Is there an area of your life where you've received God's forgiveness but haven't truly turned away from the sin? Grace is not a license to continue — it's power to stop.
  • 2. "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed" (v.31). The test of genuine discipleship is not a one-time decision but ongoing continuance in His word. How consistent is your engagement with Scripture? Is it shaping your thinking and decisions daily?
  • 3. "Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin" (v.34). Every man has areas where sin has a stronger pull than he'd like to admit. What sin pattern in your life has the most power over you? Have you brought it to Christ for the freedom He promises in v.36?
  • 4. Jesus said "I do always those things that please him" (v.29). That was His daily operating principle. What would it look like for that to be your daily operating principle — in your work, your marriage, your parenting, your private life?
  • 5. The accusers brought the woman but not the man — the law required both (Deuteronomy 22:22). Jesus exposed the hypocrisy without saying a word about it. How do you handle situations where you see injustice or hypocrisy in religious or moral settings?
  • 6. Jesus wrote on the ground twice (vv.6,8). We don't know what He wrote. Why do you think John included this detail? What do you imagine He wrote, and what does it tell you about how Jesus handles accusation?
  • 7. "The truth shall make you free" (v.32) — but first it often makes you uncomfortable. Is there a truth about yourself, your sin, or your situation that you've been avoiding because facing it feels threatening?
  • 8. Jesus told the religious leaders their father was the devil (v.44) — a stunning statement. He based this on their behavior: they wanted to kill Him (murder) and they rejected truth (lies). What does your behavior reveal about whose influence you're under?
  • 9. "Before Abraham was, I AM" (v.58). The crowd picked up stones — they understood exactly what He was claiming. Who do you say Jesus is? Not what you've been taught — what do you personally believe about Him?
