1 Chronicles — Chapter 16

1So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it: and they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God.

2And when David had made an end of offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD.

3And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine.

4And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, and to record, and to thank and praise the LORD God of Israel:

5Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed-edom: and Jeiel with psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals;

6Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God.

7Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the LORD into the hand of Asaph and his brethren.

8Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.

9Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works.

10Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD.

11Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.

12Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

13O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

14He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth.

15Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;

16Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;

17And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,

18Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;

19When ye were but few, even a few, and strangers in it.

20And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people;

21He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,

22Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

23Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation.

24Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations.

25For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.

26For all the gods of the people are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.

27Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place.

28Give unto the LORD, ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength.

29Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

30Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.

31Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The LORD reigneth.

32Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein.

33Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD, because he cometh to judge the earth.

34O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.

35And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise.

36Blessed be the LORD God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, and praised the LORD.

37So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD Asaph and his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, as every day’s work required:

38And Obed-edom with their brethren, threescore and eight; Obed-edom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be porters:

39And Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at Gibeon,

40To offer burnt offerings unto the LORD upon the altar of the burnt offering continually morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written in the law of the LORD, which he commanded Israel;

41And with them Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest that were chosen, who were expressed by name, to give thanks to the LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever;

42And with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound, and with musical instruments of God. And the sons of Jeduthun were porters.

43And all the people departed every man to his house: and David returned to bless his house.

1And they brought in the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it: and they offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before God.

2And when David had made an end of offering the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings, he blessed the people in the name of Jehovah.

3And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a portion [of flesh], and a cake of raisins.

4And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of Jehovah, and to celebrate and to thank and praise Jehovah, the God of Israel:

5Asaph the chief, and second to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, with psalteries and with harps; and Asaph with cymbals, sounding aloud;

6and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually, before the ark of the covenant of God.

7Then on that day did David first ordain to give thanks unto Jehovah, by the hand of Asaph and his brethren.

8O give thanks unto Jehovah, call upon his name; Make known his doings among the peoples.

9Sing unto him, sing praises unto him; Talk ye of all his marvellous works.

10Glory ye in his holy name; Let the heart of them rejoice that seek Jehovah.

11Seek ye Jehovah and his strength; Seek his face evermore.

12Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, His wonders, and the judgments of his mouth,

13O ye seed of Israel his servant, Ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

14He is Jehovah our God; His judgments are in all the earth.

15Remember his covenant for ever, The word which he commanded to a thousand generations,

16[The covenant] which he made with Abraham, And his oath unto Isaac,

17And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a statute, To Israel for an everlasting covenant,

18Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, The lot of your inheritance;

19When ye were but a few men in number, Yea, very few, and sojourners in it;

20And they went about from nation to nation, And from one kingdom to another people.

21He suffered no man to do them wrong; Yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,

22[Saying], Touch not mine anointed ones, And do my prophets no harm.

23Sing unto Jehovah, all the earth; Show forth his salvation from day to day.

24Declare his glory among the nations, His marvellous works among all the peoples.

25For great is Jehovah, and greatly to be praised: He also is to be feared above all gods.

26For all the gods of the peoples are idols: But Jehovah made the heavens.

27Honor and majesty are before him: Strength and gladness are in his place.

28Ascribe unto Jehovah, ye kindreds of the peoples, Ascribe unto Jehovah glory and strength;

29Ascribe unto Jehovah the glory due unto his name: Bring an offering, and come before him: Worship Jehovah in holy array.

30Tremble before him, all the earth: The world also is established that it cannot be moved.

31Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; And let them say among the nations, Jehovah reigneth.

32Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; Let the field exult, and all that is therein;

33Then shall the trees of the wood sing for joy before Jehovah; For he cometh to judge the earth.

34O give thanks unto Jehovah; for he is good; For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever.

35And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, And gather us together and deliver us from the nations, To give thanks unto thy holy name, And to triumph in thy praise.

36Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, From everlasting even to everlasting. And all the people said, Amen, and praised Jehovah.

37So he left there, before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, Asaph and his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, as every day`s work required;

38and Obed-edom with their brethren, threescore and eight; Obed-edom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be doorkeepers;

39and Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of Jehovah in the high place that was at Gibeon,

40to offer burnt-offerings unto Jehovah upon the altar of burnt-offering continually morning and evening, even according to all that is written in the law of Jehovah, which he commanded unto Israel;

41and with them Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest that were chosen, who were mentioned by name, to give thanks to Jehovah, because his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever;

42and with them Heman and Jeduthun [with] trumpets and cymbals for those that should sound aloud, and [with] instruments for the songs of God; and the sons of Jeduthun to be at the gate.

43And all the people departed every man to his house: and David returned to bless his house.

1They brought the ark of God and put it in the middle of the tent David had pitched for it. Then they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God.

2When David finished offering burnt sacrifices and peace offerings, he pronounced a blessing over the people in the Lord’s name.

3He then handed out to each Israelite man and woman a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake.

4He appointed some of the Levites to serve before the ark of the Lord, to offer prayers, songs of thanks, and hymns to the Lord God of Israel.

5Asaph was the leader and Zechariah second-in-command, followed by Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom, and Jeiel. They were to play stringed instruments, Asaph was to sound the cymbals,

6and the priests Benaiah and Jahaziel were to blow trumpets regularly before the ark of God’s covenant.

7That day David first gave to Asaph and his colleagues this song of thanks to the Lord.

8Give thanks to the Lord! Call on his name! Make known his accomplishments among the nations.

9Sing to him! Make music to him! Tell about all his miraculous deeds.

10Boast about his holy name. Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.

11Seek the Lord and the strength he gives. Seek his presence continually!

12Recall the miraculous deeds he performed, his mighty acts and the judgments he decreed,

13O children of Israel, God’s servant, you descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen ones!

14He is the Lord our God; he carries out judgment throughout the earth.

15Remember continually his covenantal decree, the promise he made to a thousand generations—

16the promise he made to Abraham, the promise he made by oath to Isaac!

17He gave it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as a lasting promise,

18saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance.”

19When they were few in number, just a very few, and foreign residents within it,

20they wandered from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another.

21He let no one oppress them; he disciplined kings for their sake,

22saying, “Don’t touch my anointed ones! Don’t harm my prophets!”

23Sing to the Lord, all the earth! Announce every day how he delivers.

24Tell the nations about his splendor, tell all the nations about his miraculous deeds.

25For the Lord is great and certainly worthy of praise, he is more awesome than all gods.

26For all the gods of the nations are worthless, but the Lord made the heavens.

27Majestic splendor emanates from him, he is the source of strength and joy.

28Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the nations, ascribe to the Lord splendor and strength!

29Ascribe to the Lord the splendor he deserves! Bring an offering and enter his presence! Worship the Lord in holy attire!

30Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is established, it cannot be moved.

31Let the heavens rejoice, and the earth be happy! Let the nations say, “The Lord reigns!”

32Let the sea and everything in it shout! Let the fields and everything in them celebrate!

33Then let the trees of the forest shout with joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth!

34Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good and his loyal love endures.

35Say this prayer: “Deliver us, O God who delivers us! Gather us! Rescue us from the nations! Then we will give thanks to your holy name, and boast about your praiseworthy deeds.”

36May the Lord God of Israel be praised, in the future and forevermore. Then all the people said, “We agree! Praise the Lord.”

37David left Asaph and his colleagues there before the ark of the Lord’s covenant to serve before the ark regularly and fulfill each day’s requirements,

38including Obed-Edom and sixty-eight colleagues. Obed-Edom son of Jeduthun and Hosah were gatekeepers.

39Zadok the priest and his fellow priests served before the Lord’s tabernacle at the worship center in Gibeon,

40regularly offering burnt sacrifices to the Lord on the altar for burnt sacrifice, morning and evening, according to what is prescribed in the law of the Lord which he charged Israel to observe.

41Joining them were Heman, Jeduthun, and the rest of those chosen and designated by name to give thanks to the Lord. (For his loyal love endures!)

42Heman and Jeduthun were in charge of the music, including the trumpets, cymbals, and the other musical instruments used in praising God. The sons of Jeduthun guarded the entrance.

43Then all the people returned to their homes, and David went to pronounce a blessing on his family.

1They brought in God’s ark, and set it in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it; and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God.

2When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in Yahweh’s name.

3He gave to everyone of Israel, both man and woman, to everyone a loaf of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins.

4He appointed some of the Levites to minister before Yahweh’s ark, and to commemorate, to thank, and to praise Yahweh, the God of Israel:

5Asaph the chief, and second to him Zechariah, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom, and Jeiel, with stringed instruments and with harps; and Asaph with cymbals, sounding aloud;

6with Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually, before the ark of the covenant of God.

7Then on that day David first ordained to give thanks to Yahweh, by the hand of Asaph and his brothers.

8Oh give thanks to Yahweh. Call on his name. Make what he has done known among the peoples.

9Sing to him. Sing praises to him. Tell of all his marvelous works.

10Glory in his holy name. Let the heart of those who seek Yahweh rejoice.

11Seek Yahweh and his strength. Seek his face forever more.

12Remember his marvelous works that he has done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth,

13you offspring of Israel his servant, you children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

14He is Yahweh our God. His judgments are in all the earth.

15Remember his covenant forever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations,

16the covenant which he made with Abraham, his oath to Isaac.

17He confirmed the same to Jacob for a statute, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,

18saying, “I will give you the land of Canaan, The lot of your inheritance,”

19when you were but a few men in number, yes, very few, and foreigners were in it.

20They went about from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people.

21He allowed no man to do them wrong. Yes, he reproved kings for their sakes,

22“Don’t touch my anointed ones! Do my prophets no harm!”

23Sing to Yahweh, all the earth! Display his salvation from day to day.

24Declare his glory among the nations, and his marvelous works among all the peoples.

25For great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised. He also is to be feared above all gods.

26For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but Yahweh made the heavens.

27Honor and majesty are before him. Strength and gladness are in his place.

28Ascribe to Yahweh, you relatives of the peoples, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength!

29Ascribe to Yahweh the glory due to his name. Bring an offering, and come before him. Worship Yahweh in holy array.

30Tremble before him, all the earth. The world also is established that it can’t be moved.

31Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice! Let them say among the nations, “Yahweh reigns!”

32Let the sea roar, and its fullness! Let the field exult, and all that is in it!

33Then the trees of the forest will sing for joy before Yahweh, for he comes to judge the earth.

34Oh give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

35Say, “Save us, God of our salvation! Gather us together and deliver us from the nations, to give thanks to your holy name, to triumph in your praise.”

36Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, from everlasting even to everlasting. All the people said, “Amen,” and praised Yahweh.

37So he left Asaph and his brothers there before the ark of Yahweh’s covenant, to minister before the ark continually, as every day’s work required;

42and with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should sound aloud, and with instruments for the songs of God; and the sons of Jeduthun to be at the gate.

43All the people departed, each man to his house; and David returned to bless his house.

Summary

After the ark is placed in the tent David prepared, he appoints Levites to minister before it and delivers a psalm of thanksgiving praising God's covenant faithfulness. Regular worship is established with designated musicians and gatekeepers serving before the ark.

Authorship & Background

Author: Traditionally attributed to Ezra the scribe. Originally one book with 2 Chronicles. Written post-exile (approximately 450-400 BC) for the returned remnant. The Chronicler retells Israel's history from a priestly/worship perspective, emphasizing the Davidic covenant, Temple worship, and God's faithfulness. Key themes: genealogical continuity (God preserved His people), proper worship (the Temple and its services), the Davidic line (pointing to Messiah), and hope for restoration.
Historical Context: Chapter 16 records the ark's arrival in Jerusalem and the establishment of ongoing worship ministry before it. The centerpiece is David's great psalm of thanksgiving (vv. 8-36), which draws from Psalm 105:1-15, Psalm 96:1-13, and Psalm 106:1, 47-48. This composite hymn celebrates God's covenant faithfulness, His sovereignty over creation, and His saving acts on behalf of Israel. The chapter then details the permanent worship arrangements David established—Levitical ministers before the ark in Jerusalem, and the sacrificial system continuing at the tabernacle in Gibeon.
For the post-exilic community, this chapter was profoundly relevant. The returned remnant was reestablishing worship in a rebuilt (though diminished) Temple. David's psalm provided both a model for their worship and a theological foundation for their hope. The cry "Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen" (v. 35) would have resonated powerfully with Jews still scattered among the nations. The psalm's emphasis on God's everlasting covenant with Abraham reassured the remnant that God's promises had not expired despite the exile.
The chapter also reveals an important transitional moment in Israel's worship history. The tabernacle with its altar remained at Gibeon (v. 39), while the ark rested in David's tent in Jerusalem. This dual worship arrangement would continue until Solomon built the Temple and united everything in one place. The Chronicler shows David organizing worship musicians and establishing regular ministry patterns that would become the template for Temple worship. This text essentially provides the charter for the Levitical worship guilds that served in both the First and Second Temples.

Map & Geography

  • Largely parallels 1-2 Samuel geographically. Jerusalem (Zion/City of David) is the theological and political center.
  • Key sites: Hebron (David's first capital, 7 years), the threshing floor of Ornan/Araunah (future Temple site, ch.21).
  • Chapters 1-9 (genealogies) contain tribal allotments but minimal narrative geography.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik notes the significance of David establishing both a new worship center (the tent in Jerusalem) while maintaining the old one (the tabernacle at Gibeon). He sees this as a transitional period that honored tradition while moving toward the fuller worship God intended in the Temple.
  • Charles Spurgeon: "What a day was this in Israel! The ark at rest in Zion, the people fed with bread and flesh and wine, and a psalm of praise ascending like holy incense from the lips of David! Here is the pattern for the church in every age: the Word of God central, the people of God nourished, and the praise of God perpetual. Note how David appointed the Levites to 'record, and to thank, and to praise'—that is, to remember, to give thanks, and to worship. These three form the complete exercise of the devout soul. We remember what God has done, we give thanks for what He has given, and we praise Him for who He is. Let us not be content with only one or two of these; all three must mark our daily worship."

Reflection

  • 1. Make thanksgiving a lifestyle, not just a reaction. David appointed Levites to thank and praise God "continually, as every day's work required" (v. 37). Gratitude was not reserved for special occasions but was daily, habitual, and structured into the rhythm of life. We should build thanksgiving into our daily routines, not wait until we feel grateful.
  • 2. Remember God's past faithfulness to fuel present faith. David's psalm recounts God's works from Abraham through the wilderness— "Remember his marvellous works" (v. 12). Corporate and personal memory of God's faithfulness is the foundation for trust in present difficulties. Keep a record of God's works in your life.
  • 3. Worship has both a vertical and horizontal dimension. The psalm calls Israel to both praise God directly AND "make known his deeds among the people" (v. 8) and "declare his glory among the heathen" (v. 24). True worship overflows into witness. If our worship does not produce a desire to share God's greatness with others, something is missing.
  • 4. God's covenant faithfulness spans generations. The psalm emphasizes "the word which he commanded to a thousand generations" (v. 15). God's promises to Abraham are still operational in David's day and beyond. We are beneficiaries of ancient promises. God's faithfulness to previous generations is the guarantee of His faithfulness to ours.
  • 5. The purpose of salvation is worship. Verse 35 prays for deliverance "that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise." God does not save us merely from something but for something—namely, to worship and glorify Him. Every deliverance should result in deeper devotion. Salvation without worship is incomplete.
