1Now these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron; Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
2But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest’s office.
3And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service.
4And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of Ithamar according to the house of their fathers.
5Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.
6And Shemaiah the son of Nethaneel the scribe, one of the Levites, wrote them before the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and before the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites: one principal household being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.
7Now the first lot came forth to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,
8The third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,
9The fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin,

17The one and twentieth to Jachin, the two and twentieth to Gamul,
18The three and twentieth to Delaiah, the four and twentieth to Maaziah.
19These were the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the LORD, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him.
20And the rest of the sons of Levi were these: Of the sons of Amram; Shubael: of the sons of Shubael; Jehdeiah.
21Concerning Rehabiah: of the sons of Rehabiah, the first was Isshiah.

27The sons of Merari by Jaaziah; Beno, and Shoham, and Zaccur, and Ibri.
28Of Mahli came Eleazar, who had no sons.
29Concerning Kish: the son of Kish was Jerahmeel.
30The sons also of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites after the house of their fathers.
31These likewise cast lots over against their brethren the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, and Zadok, and Ahimelech, and the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites, even the principal fathers over against their younger brethren.
1And the courses of the sons of Aaron [were these]. The sons of Aaron: Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
2But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest`s office.
3And David with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to their ordering in their service.
4And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and [thus] were they divided: of the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen, heads of fathers` houses; and of the sons of Ithamar, according to their fathers` houses, eight.
5Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for there were princes of the sanctuary, and princes of God, both of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.
6And Shemaiah the son of Nethanel the scribe, who was of the Levites, wrote them in the presence of the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the fathers` [houses] of the priests and of the Levites; one fathers` house being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.
7Now the first lot came forth to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,
8the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,
9the fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin,
10the seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah,

16the nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezkel,
17the one and twentieth to Jachin, the two and twentieth to Gamul,
18the three and twentieth to Delaiah, the four and twentieth to Maaziah.
19This was the ordering of them in their service, to come into the house of Jehovah according to the ordinance [given] unto them by Aaron their father, as Jehovah, the God of Israel, had commanded him.
20And of the rest of the sons of Levi: of the sons of Amram, Shubael; of the sons of Shubael, Jehdeiah.
21Of Rehabiah: of the sons of Rehabiah, Isshiah the chief.
22Of the Izharites, Shelomoth; of the sons of Shelomoth, Jahath.

27The sons of Merari: of Jaaziah, Beno, and Shoham, and Zaccur, and Ibri.
28Of Mahli: Eleazar, who had no sons.
29Of Kish; the sons of Kish: Jerahmeel.
30And the sons of Mushi: Mahli, and Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites after their fathers` houses.
31These likewise cast lots even as their brethren the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, and Zadok, and Ahimelech, and the heads of the fathers` [houses] of the priests and of the Levites; the fathers` [houses] of the chief even as those of his younger brother.
1The divisions of Aaron’s descendants were as follows:The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
2Nadab and Abihu died before their father did; they had no sons. Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.
3David, Zadok (a descendant of Eleazar), and Ahimelech (a descendant of Ithamar) divided them into groups to carry out their assigned responsibilities.
4The descendants of Eleazar had more leaders than the descendants of Ithamar, so they divided them up accordingly; the descendants of Eleazar had sixteen leaders, while the descendants of Ithamar had eight.
5They divided them by lots, for there were officials of the Holy Place and officials designated by God among the descendants of both Eleazar and Ithamar.
6The scribe Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, wrote down their names before the king, the officials, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the leaders of the priestly and Levite families. One family was drawn by lot from Eleazar, and then the next from Ithamar.
7The first lot went to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,
8the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,
9the fifth to Malkijah, the sixth to Mijamin,
10the seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah,
11the ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah,
12the eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim,
13the thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,

16the nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezkel,
17the twenty-first to Jakin,the twenty-second to Gamul,
18the twenty-third to Delaiah,the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.
19This was the order in which they carried out their assigned responsibilities when they entered the Lord’s temple, according to the regulations given them by their ancestor Aaron, just as the Lord God of Israel had instructed him.
20The rest of the Levites included: Shubael from the sons of Amram,Jehdeiah from the sons of Shubael,
21the firstborn Isshiah from Rehabiah and the sons of Rehabiah,

30The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the Levites, listed by their families.
31Like their relatives, the descendants of Aaron, they also cast lots before King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, the leaders of families, the priests, and the Levites. The families of the oldest son cast lots along with those of the youngest.
1These were the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
2But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest’s office.
3David with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to their ordering in their service.
4There were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and they were divided like this: of the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen, heads of fathers’ houses; and of the sons of Ithamar, according to their fathers’ houses, eight.
5Thus were they divided impartially by drawing lots; for there were princes of the sanctuary, and princes of God, both of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.
6Shemaiah the son of Nethanel the scribe, who was of the Levites, wrote them in the presence of the king, the princes, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the priests and of the Levites; one fathers’ house being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.
7Now the first lot came out to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,

17the twenty-first to Jachin, the twenty-second to Gamul,
18the twenty-third to Delaiah, and the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.
19This was their ordering in their service, to come into Yahweh’s house according to the ordinance given to them by Aaron their father, as Yahweh, the God of Israel, had commanded him.
20Of the rest of the sons of Levi: of the sons of Amram, Shubael; of the sons of Shubael, Jehdeiah.
21Of Rehabiah: of the sons of Rehabiah, Isshiah the chief.
22Of the Izharites, Shelomoth; of the sons of Shelomoth, Jahath.
23The sons of Hebron: Jeriah, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.
24The sons of Uzziel: Micah; of the sons of Micah, Shamir.

Summary
The descendants of Aaron are divided by lot into twenty-four courses for priestly service in the Temple, ensuring orderly rotation. The remaining Levites are also organized by lot for their various duties.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Largely parallels 1-2 Samuel geographically. Jerusalem (Zion/City of David) is the theological and political center.
- Key sites: Hebron (David's first capital, 7 years), the threshing floor of Ornan/Araunah (future Temple site, ch.21).
- Chapters 1-9 (genealogies) contain tribal allotments but minimal narrative geography.
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik notes that this system of 24 priestly courses meant each division served approximately two weeks per year (plus the three major festivals when all served). He emphasizes that the use of lots removed human politics from sacred service, and highlights the remarkable endurance of this system through the New Testament era, connecting it directly to Zechariah's service in Luke 1.
- Charles Spurgeon: "Order in God's house is not the enemy of spirituality but its servant. Those who despise structure in worship often produce chaos that dishonors the God they claim to serve freely. David, who danced before the ark with abandon, also organized the priesthood with precision. The same heart that burns with passion for God plans carefully for His service. Let no man set zeal against order, or devotion against preparation. The casting of lots teaches us further that God Himself determines the places of service — not our ambition, not our preference, but His sovereign will assigns our post. Be content where God places you, for the lot that falls to you fell from His hand."
Reflection
- 1. God values order in worship (vv.1-6). The detailed organization of priestly divisions teaches that worship is not meant to be haphazard or improvised. God who created the cosmos with precise order desires that same intentionality in how we approach Him. This does not mean worship must be rigid or lifeless — David himself was intensely passionate — but that preparation and structure serve rather than hinder true devotion. Consider whether your approach to worship (personal and corporate) is thoughtfully prepared or carelessly casual.
- 2. Every role matters in God's service (vv.20-31). The chapter does not only organize the high-profile priestly positions but extends to every Levitical family. God assigns service to all — not just the prominent. Whether you serve in visible leadership or behind the scenes, your assignment comes from the same God who ordered the priesthood. Faithfulness in an obscure role is as valued as faithfulness in a prominent one. The twenty-fourth course is no less important than the first.
- 3. Impartiality reflects God's character (v.5, 31). The lot removed human favoritism from sacred assignments. God shows no partiality (Acts 10:34; Romans 2:11), and His people should reflect this in how they organize ministry. When positions are assigned by politics, popularity, or privilege rather than God's leading, the church fails to reflect its Lord. Seek God's will for your place of service rather than maneuvering for preferred positions.
- 4. Faithful organization bears fruit across generations (v.10/Luke 1:5). David's careful planning endured over 900 years and directly connected to the announcement of Messiah's forerunner. The work you do today to establish godly patterns — in your family, church, or community — may bear fruit long after you are gone. Do not despise the slow, administrative work of building systems that serve God's purposes. What feels mundane now may prove eternally significant.
- 5. Qualification for service comes from God, not self-appointment (vv.1-3). Only Aaron's descendants could serve as priests, and only by God's prescribed method were their roles assigned. In the New Testament, all believers are priests (1 Peter 2:9), but specific ministry roles still require God's calling and the church's recognition. Do not grasp at positions God has not given, and do not shrink from positions He has. Submit to His ordering of your service as the priests submitted to the lot.
