1Concerning the divisions of the porters: Of the Korhites was Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of Asaph.
2And the sons of Meshelemiah were, Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,

6Also unto Shemaiah his son were sons born, that ruled throughout the house of their father: for they were mighty men of valour.
7The sons of Shemaiah; Othni, and Rephael, and Obed, Elzabad, whose brethren were strong men, Elihu, and Semachiah.
8All these of the sons of Obed-edom: they and their sons and their brethren, able men for strength for the service, were threescore and two of Obed-edom.
9And Meshelemiah had sons and brethren, strong men, eighteen.
10Also Hosah, of the children of Merari, had sons; Simri the chief, (for though he was not the firstborn, yet his father made him the chief;)
11Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth: all the sons and brethren of Hosah were thirteen.
12Among these were the divisions of the porters, even among the chief men, having wards one against another, to minister in the house of the LORD.
13And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate.
14And the lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for Zechariah his son, a wise counsellor, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.
15To Obed-edom southward; and to his sons the house of Asuppim.
16To Shuppim and Hosah the lot came forth westward, with the gate Shallecheth, by the causeway of the going up, ward against ward.

27They had dedicated some of the plunder taken in battles to be used for repairs on the Lord’s temple.
28They were also in charge of everything dedicated by Samuel the prophet, Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner, and Joab son of Zeruiah; Shelomith and his relatives were in charge of everything that had been dedicated.

32Jeriah had 2,700 relatives who were respected family leaders. King David placed them in charge of the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh; they took care of all matters pertaining to God and the king.

Summary
The gatekeepers are organized into divisions for guarding the Temple entrances, and Levites are appointed as treasurers over the dedicated gifts and storehouses. Obed-edom's family is especially blessed with numerous sons who serve as gatekeepers.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Largely parallels 1-2 Samuel geographically. Jerusalem (Zion/City of David) is the theological and political center.
- Key sites: Hebron (David's first capital, 7 years), the threshing floor of Ornan/Araunah (future Temple site, ch.21).
- Chapters 1-9 (genealogies) contain tribal allotments but minimal narrative geography.
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes that the gatekeepers' ministry illustrates how every role in God's house is significant — not only the visible worship leaders but those who serve in protection and support. He connects Obed-edom's blessing to the principle that those who honor God's presence in their lives receive generational blessing, and notes that the integration of sacred and civil duties (vv.29- 32) shows that all of life was meant to be under God's authority.
- Charles Spurgeon: "The man who keeps the gate of God's house does a work as sacred as he who ministers at the altar. Obed-edom's household numbered sixty-two strong men for the service — and why? 'For God blessed him.' Proximity to the ark — the presence of God — made his household fruitful beyond measure. Mark this well: those who welcome God's presence into their homes shall find their homes multiplied in blessing. The gatekeeper who stands faithfully at his post, admitting the pure and barring the profane, does a prophet's work in a porter's garments. The Church has always needed her doorkeepers — those who guard doctrine, discipline, and the sanctity of fellowship. Despise not the small office; God counts it great."
Reflection
- 1. Every role in God's house is sacred ministry (v.12). The gatekeepers "ministered" — their security work was worship service. In God's economy, the usher, the sound technician, the parking lot volunteer, and the nursery worker serve as truly as the preacher. If your role in God's house seems unglamorous, remember: the gatekeepers were Levites set apart by God for sacred duty. Faithful service in any God-assigned role is ministry, regardless of visibility.
- 2. God's blessing multiplies through generations (v.5). Obed-edom welcomed God's presence, and his household was blessed with 62 able servants. The choices you make regarding God's presence in your life affect not only you but your children and grandchildren. Welcome God's presence wholeheartedly — into your home, your schedule, your finances — and watch the blessing compound across generations. Proximity to God is the source of lasting fruitfulness.
- 3. Faithful stewardship requires accountability (vv.20-28). The treasurers did not manage God's wealth alone — multiple families shared responsibility, creating natural accountability. Sacred resources demand transparent, shared oversight. In your own life and church, ensure that finances are managed with integrity, accountability, and multiple witnesses. God's resources deserve better stewardship than our own.
- 4. All of life belongs to God, not just "religious" activities (vv.29-32). Levites served as civil administrators — "officers and judges" over secular affairs. The sacred/secular divide is a modern invention; in God's design, His people bring His standards to every sphere of life. Your work, civic engagement, and community involvement are extensions of your worship. Do them as unto the Lord with the same devotion you bring to explicitly "spiritual" activities.
- 5. Protection of God's house requires vigilance (vv.12-18). Gates on every side, guards at every post, watches day and night — the Temple was comprehensively protected. The church today needs spiritual gatekeepers: those who guard doctrine, maintain standards of holiness, protect the vulnerable, and ensure that what enters God's community is worthy of His presence. This is not legalism but love — love for God's holiness and love for God's people.
