Summary
The chapter traces the tribe of Levi in detail, beginning with the sons of Levi - Gershon, Kohath, and Merari - and the family of Amram, whose children are Aaron, Moses, and Miriam (vv. 1-3). It follows the high priestly line from Aaron down through Zadok to Jehozadak, who goes into exile when the LORD hands Judah and Jerusalem over to Nebuchadnezzar (vv. 4-15). The wider Levitical genealogy is then repeated in more detail (vv. 16-30) before turning to the singers David appoints for the house of the LORD: Heman from the Kohathites, Asaph his kinsman from the Gershomites, and Ethan from the Merarites, each ministering with song before the tabernacle (vv. 31-48). Aaron and his descendants are set apart for the most holy duties, offering sacrifices and incense and making atonement for Israel (vv. 49-53). The chapter closes with a lengthy record of towns and pasturelands assigned to the various Levitical clans across the tribal territories, including cities of refuge such as Hebron and Shechem (vv. 54-81), establishing where the priests and Levites lived and served throughout the land.

Map & Geography
- Largely parallels 1-2 Samuel geographically. Jerusalem (Zion/City of David) is the theological and political center.
- Key sites: Hebron (David's first capital, 7 years), the threshing floor of Ornan/Araunah (future Temple site, ch.21).
- Chapters 1-9 (genealogies) contain tribal allotments but minimal narrative geography.
Places on this map
- JerusalemJerusalemA hill town about 2,500 feet up in the central spine of Judah, roughly 35 miles inland from the Mediterranean and 15 miles west of the Jordan. It sits on no trade route and has no river, which is why it mattered as a fortress and a sanctuary rather than as a market. Wikipedia
- HebronHebron, West BankThe highest town in the Judean hills at about 3,000 feet, 19 miles south of Jerusalem. Abraham bought a burial cave here, and David reigned from it for seven years before moving north, so it carries both the patriarchal and the royal claim to the land. Wikipedia

Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik notes that the Chronicler gives Levi more space than any other tribe because his concern is worship. The post-exilic community needed to know that its priests were legitimate, its musicians were authorized, and its worship was in continuity with David's original pattern. This chapter is the Chronicler's charter for proper worship.

- Matthew Henry's Exposition (1710): blueletterbible.org A devotional verse-by-verse commentary in the Puritan tradition, still among the most widely read three centuries on. Public domain.

Reflection
- God Preserves What He Values Through Exile (v.15) — The priestly line went into Babylonian captivity intact, surviving to be restored under Jeshua after the return. What has God called you to that you're afraid a hard season will destroy rather than simply carry through?
- Worship as Consecrated Ministry, Not Performance (vv.31-32) — David's musicians "ministered" and "waited on their office" — worship music was an ordered, sacred service, not mere entertainment. Do you approach worship, whether leading or singing along, as genuine ministry before God?
- Different Roles, Same Sacred Purpose (v.49) — Only Aaron's descendants could offer sacrifices while the rest of the Levites served in supporting roles, yet both were essential to Israel's worship. Can you serve faithfully in your role in the body of Christ without envying someone else's?
- God's Presence Spread Through His Servants (vv.54-81) — The Levites were deliberately scattered into cities throughout every tribe rather than concentrated in one place. Are you willing to be God's representative wherever you're planted, even if it feels far from the center of things?
