Joshua — Chapter 6

Loading ESV text...

1Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.

2And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.

3And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.

4And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.

5And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.

6And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD.

7And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD.

8And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns passed on before the LORD, and blew with the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.

9And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets, and the rereward came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.

10And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.

11So the ark of the LORD compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

12And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD.

13And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rereward came after the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.

14And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.

15And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.

16And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.

17And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

18And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.

19But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.

20So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

21And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.

22But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.

23And the young men that were spies went in, and brought Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.

24And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.

25And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

26And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.

27So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.

1Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.

2And Jehovah said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thy hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valor.

3And ye shall compass the city, all the men of war, going about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.

4And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams` horns before the ark: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.

5And it shall be, that, when they make a long blast with the ram`s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him.

6And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams` horns before the ark of Jehovah.

7And they said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let the armed men pass on before the ark of Jehovah.

8And it was so, that, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams` horns before Jehovah passed on, and blew the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of Jehovah followed them.

9And the armed men went before the priests that blew the trumpets, and the rearward went after the ark, [the priests] blowing the trumpets as they went.

10And Joshua commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.

11So he caused the ark of Jehovah to compass the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

12And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of Jehovah.

13And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams` horns before the ark of Jehovah went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; and the rearward came after the ark of Jehovah, [the priests] blowing the trumpets as they went.

14And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.

15And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early at the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on the day they compassed the city seven times.

16And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for Jehovah hath given you the city.

17And the city shall be devoted, even it and all that is therein, to Jehovah: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

18But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when ye have devoted it, ye take of the devoted thing; so would ye make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it.

19But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy unto Jehovah: they shall come into the treasury of Jehovah.

20So the people shouted, and [the priests] blew the trumpets; and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, that the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

21And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.

22And Joshua said unto the two men that had spied out the land, Go into the harlot`s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.

23And the young men the spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; all her kindred also they brought out; and they set them without the camp of Israel.

24And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein; only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of Jehovah.

25But Rahab the harlot, and her father`s household, and all that she had, did Joshua save alive; and she dwelt in the midst of Israel unto this day, because she hid the messengers, whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

26And Joshua charged them with an oath at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before Jehovah, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: with the loss of his first-born shall he lay the foundation thereof, and with the loss of his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.

27So Jehovah was with Joshua; and his fame was in all the land.

1Now Jericho was shut tightly because of the Israelites. No one was allowed to leave or enter.

2The Lord told Joshua, “See, I am about to defeat Jericho for you, along with its king and its warriors.

3Have all the warriors march around the city one time; do this for six days.

4Have seven priests carry seven rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day march around the city seven times, while the priests blow the horns.

5When you hear the signal from the rams’ horns, have the whole army give a loud battle cry. Then the city wall will collapse, and the warriors should charge straight ahead.”

6So Joshua son of Nun summoned the priests and instructed them, “Pick up the ark of the covenant, and seven priests must carry seven rams’ horns in front of the ark of the Lord.”

7And he told the army, “Move ahead and march around the city, with armed troops going ahead of the ark of the Lord.”

8When Joshua gave the army its orders, the seven priests carrying the seven rams’ horns before the Lord moved ahead and blew the horns as the ark of the covenant of the Lord followed behind.

9Armed troops marched ahead of the priests blowing the horns, while the rear guard followed along behind the ark blowing rams’ horns.

10Now Joshua had instructed the army, “Do not give a battle cry or raise your voices; say nothing until the day I tell you, ‘Give the battle cry.’ Then give the battle cry!”

11So Joshua made sure they marched the ark of the Lord around the city one time. Then they went back to the camp and spent the night there.

12Bright and early the next morning Joshua had the priests pick up the ark of the Lord.

13The seven priests carrying the seven rams’ horns before the ark of the Lord marched along blowing their horns. Armed troops marched ahead of them, while the rear guard followed along behind the ark of the Lord blowing rams’ horns.

14They marched around the city one time on the second day, then returned to the camp. They did this six days in all.

15On the seventh day they were up at the crack of dawn and marched around the city as before—only this time they marched around it seven times.

16The seventh time around, the priests blew the rams’ horns, and Joshua told the army, “Give the battle cry, for the Lord is handing the city over to you!

17The city and all that is in it must be set apart for the Lord; only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house will live, because she hid the spies we sent.

18But be careful when you are setting apart the riches for God. If you take any of it, then you will make the Israelite camp subject to annihilation and cause a disaster.

19All the silver and gold, as well as bronze and iron items, belong to the Lord. They must go into the Lord’s treasury.”

20The rams’ horns sounded, and when the army heard the signal, they gave a loud battle cry. The wall collapsed, and the warriors charged straight ahead into the city and captured it.

21They annihilated with the sword everything that breathed in the city, including men and women, young and old, as well as cattle, sheep, and donkeys.

22Joshua told the two men who had spied on the land, “Enter the prostitute’s house and bring out the woman and all who belong to her as you promised her.”

23So the young spies went and brought out Rahab, her father, mother, brothers, and all who belonged to her. They brought out her whole family and took them to a place outside the Israelite camp.

24But they burned the city and all that was in it, except for the silver, gold, and bronze and iron items they put in the treasury of the Lord’s house.

25Yet Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, her father’s family, and all who belonged to her. She lives in Israel to this very day because she hid the messengers Joshua sent to spy on Jericho.

26At that time Joshua made this solemn declaration: “The man who attempts to rebuild this city of Jericho will stand condemned before the Lord. He will lose his firstborn son when he lays its foundations and his youngest son when he erects its gates!”

27The Lord was with Joshua, and he became famous throughout the land.

1Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the children of Israel. No one went out, and no one came in.

2Yahweh said to Joshua, “Behold, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the mighty men of valor.

3All of your men of war shall march around the city, going around the city once. You shall do this six days.

4Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day, you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.

5It shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the city wall shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up, every man straight in front of him.”

6Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before Yahweh’s ark.”

7They said to the people, “Advance! March around the city, and let the armed men pass on before Yahweh’s ark.”

8It was so, that when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before Yahweh advanced and blew the trumpets, and the ark of Yahweh’s covenant followed them.

9The armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the ark went after them. The trumpets sounded as they went.

10Joshua commanded the people, saying, “You shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.”

11So he caused Yahweh’s ark to go around the city, going about it once. Then they came into the camp, and stayed in the camp.

12Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up Yahweh’s ark.

13The seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns in front of Yahweh’s ark went on continually, and blew the trumpets. The armed men went in front of them. The rear guard came after Yahweh’s ark. The trumpets sounded as they went.

14The second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. They did this six days.

15On the seventh day, they rose early at the dawning of the day, and marched around the city in the same way seven times. Only on this day they marched around the city seven times.

16At the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for Yahweh has given you the city!

17The city shall be devoted, even it and all that is in it, to Yahweh. Only Rahab the prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

18But as for you, only keep yourselves from what is devoted to destruction, lest when you have devoted it, you take of the devoted thing; so you would make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it.

19But all the silver, gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy to Yahweh. They shall come into Yahweh’s treasury.”

20So the people shouted and the priests blew the trumpets. When the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight in front of him, and they took the city.

21They utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword.

22Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house, and bring the woman and all that she has out from there, as you swore to her.”

23The young men who were spies went in, and brought out Rahab with her father, her mother, her brothers, and all that she had. They also brought out all of her relatives, and they set them outside of the camp of Israel.

24They burned the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only they put the silver, the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron into the treasury of Yahweh’s house.

25But Rahab the prostitute, her father’s household, and all that she had, Joshua saved alive. She lives in the middle of Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers, whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

26Joshua commanded them with an oath at that time, saying, “Cursed is the man before Yahweh, who rises up and builds this city Jericho. With the loss of his firstborn he will lay its foundation, and with the loss of his youngest son he will set up its gates.”

27So Yahweh was with Joshua; and his fame was in all the land.

Summary

Israel marches around Jericho for seven days, and on the seventh day the walls fall flat at the sound of trumpets and the people's shout. Rahab and her family are spared; the city is devoted to destruction.

Authorship & Background

Author: Joshua, with possible later editorial additions. Joshua was Moses' assistant and successor, who led Israel into the Promised Land. The book covers approximately 25 years (1406-1381 BC) — from the crossing of the Jordan to Joshua's death. Hebrew title: 'Yehoshua' — 'YHWH saves' (the same name as Jesus in Greek). The book demonstrates God's faithfulness to His land promise to Abraham (Genesis 15:18-21) and shows that victory comes through faith and obedience, not human strength.
Historical Context: Chapter 6 records the fall of Jericho — one of the most dramatic events in Scripture. Jericho was a heavily fortified city, the gateway to Canaan, and the first obstacle to Israel's conquest. God's battle plan is deliberately absurd by military standards: march silently around the city for six days, then shout on the seventh. No siege engines, no battering rams, no military strategy — only obedience to God's bizarre instructions. The number seven dominates: 7 days, 7 priests, 7 trumpets, 7 circuits on the 7th day. Seven is the number of completion and divine perfection. The walls fall "flat" (literally "under itself" — collapsing straight down) by divine power alone. The city is placed under "cherem" (the ban/devotion to destruction) — everything is destroyed or given to God's treasury. Nothing is kept as plunder. Rahab and her family are saved as promised. The chapter demonstrates that Israel's first victory comes entirely by faith and obedience, not by human strength — setting the pattern for the entire conquest.
Jericho Sealed and God's Promise (vv.1-5): Jericho is "straitly shut up" — completely sealed in fear of Israel (v.1). God speaks: "See, I have given into thine hand Jericho" (v.2) — past tense. The victory is already accomplished in God's mind; Israel must simply obey to receive it. The instructions: march around the city once daily for six days (v.3). Seven priests with seven ram's horn trumpets go before the ark (v.4). On the seventh day, march seven times, then at the long trumpet blast, all the people shout — "and the wall of the city shall fall down flat" (v.5).
The March Begins (vv.6-14): Joshua organizes the procession: armed men first, then seven priests with trumpets, then the ark, then the rear guard (vv.6-9). Critical command: absolute silence — "Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice" (v.10). Only the trumpets sound. For six days they march once around the city in silence and return to camp (vv.11-14). Imagine Jericho watching this strange, silent procession day after day — the psychological pressure building.
The Seventh Day (vv.15-20): On the seventh day they rise at dawn and march seven times around the city (v.15). At the seventh circuit, Joshua commands: "Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city" (v.16). He declares the city "accursed" (cherem — devoted to destruction) with the exception of Rahab (v.17). Warning: do not take any devoted thing, or you will bring a curse on Israel's camp (v.18). Silver, gold, bronze, and iron go to God's treasury (v.19). The people shout, the trumpets blow — "and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him" (v.20).
The Destruction and Rahab's Salvation (vv.21-25): Everything in the city is utterly destroyed — "man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass" (v.21). Joshua sends the two spies to rescue Rahab and her family as sworn (vv.22-23). They are placed "without the camp of Israel" (v.23) — outside temporarily, but Rahab "dwelleth in Israel even unto this day" (v.25). The city is burned; metals go to God's treasury (v.24).
The Curse on Jericho (vv.26-27): Joshua pronounces a curse on anyone who rebuilds Jericho: "he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it" (v.26). This curse was fulfilled in 1 Kings 16:34 when Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho and lost his sons. "So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country" (v.27).

Map & Geography

  • Jericho: Located in the Jordan Valley, about 800 feet below sea level — one of the lowest cities on earth
  • The city was heavily fortified with double walls; strategically controlled access from the Jordan to the central highlands
  • Rahab's house in the wall (north side) — she and her family survive in the section that did not collapse

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes that God's battle plan was designed to make clear that the victory belonged to Him alone. No military commander would devise such a strategy — it is foolishness by human standards but divine wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:25). The silence for six days followed by the shout pictures patient faith followed by triumphant proclamation. He also addresses the ethical question of the destruction: Jericho's judgment was the culmination of 400+ years of divine patience (Genesis 15:16).
  • Charles Spurgeon: "March around the walls in silence — what a battle plan! No general in history would propose it. But God's ways are not our ways. He chose the foolish thing to confound the wise. And when the shout came — oh, what a shout! The shout of faith that declares the victory before the walls have moved. Shout, believer! Shout before you see the answer! For the LORD has given you the city."

Reflection

  • 1. God's methods confound human wisdom (vv.3-5). Marching and shouting is not a military strategy — it is an act of worship and obedience. God deliberately chose a method that could not be explained by human skill. When God calls you to something that makes no earthly sense, obey anyway. His foolishness is wiser than our wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:25).
  • 2. Silent obedience before the shout of faith (v.10). Six days of silence — no complaining, no questioning, no commentary. Just obedient, silent marching. Sometimes God calls us to seasons of quiet obedience before the breakthrough comes. Be faithful in the silent days.
  • 3. The shout comes before the fall (v.16). "Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city" — present tense faith. They shout while the walls still stand. Faith declares God's victory before the evidence appears. Praise is not a response to victory — it is the weapon that brings it.
  • 4. Cherem — everything belongs to God (vv.17-19). The firstfruits of conquest belong entirely to God. Israel cannot profit from Jericho — it all goes to Him. The first belongs to God: first city, first fruits, first of everything. When we give God the first, He blesses the rest.
  • 5. Grace in the midst of judgment (vv.22-25). In a city under total destruction, one household is saved — by faith. Rahab's scarlet cord in the window saves her family while everything else perishes. Even in judgment, God remembers mercy. Even in wrath, faith finds refuge.
  • 6. Do not touch the devoted thing (v.18). Joshua's warning is clear and specific — yet Achan will violate it in the very next chapter. The things God has declared off-limits are off-limits for our protection. Taking what belongs to God brings a curse, not a blessing.
