Luke — Chapter 24

1Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

2And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

3And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

4And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

5And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

6He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

7Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

8And they remembered his words,

9And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.

10It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.

11And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.

12Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

13And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

14And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

15And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

16But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

17And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

18And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

19And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

20And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

21But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

22Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;

23And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.

24And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

25Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

26Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

27And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

28And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.

29But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

30And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

31And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

32And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

33And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

34Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

35And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

36And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

37But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

38And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

39Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

40And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

41And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?

42And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.

43And he took it, and did eat before them.

44And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

45Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

46And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

47And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

48And ye are witnesses of these things.

49And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

50And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.

51And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.

52And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:

53And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.

1But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came unto the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared.

2And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

3And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

4And it came to pass, while they were perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel:

6He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

7saying that the Son of man must be delivered up into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

8And they remembered his words,

9and returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.

10Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the [mother] of James: and the other women with them told these things unto the apostles.

11And these words appeared in their sight as idle talk; and they disbelieved them.

12But Peter arose, and ran unto the tomb; and stooping and looking in, he seeth the linen cloths by themselves; and he departed to his home, wondering at that which was come to pass.

13And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was threescore furlongs from Jerusalem.

14And they communed with each other of all these things which had happened.

15And it came to pass, while they communed and questioned together, that Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

16But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

17And he said unto them, What communications are these that ye have one with another, as ye walk? And they stood still, looking sad.

18And one of them, named Cleopas, answering said unto him, Dost thou alone sojourn in Jerusalem and not know the things which are come to pass there in these days?

19And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

20and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.

21But we hoped that it was he who should redeem Israel. Yea and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things came to pass.

22Moreover certain women of our company amazed us, having been early at the tomb;

23and when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

24And certain of them that were with us went to the tomb, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

27And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

28And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go further.

29And they constrained him, saying, Abide with us; for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in to abide with them.

30And it came to pass, when he had sat down with them to meat, he took the bread and blessed; and breaking [it] he gave to them.

31And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

32And they said one to another, Was not our heart burning within us, while he spake to us in the way, while he opened to us the scriptures?

33And they rose up that very hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

34saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

35And they rehearsed the things [that happened] in the way, and how he was known of them in the breaking of the bread.

36And as they spake these things, he himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace [be] unto you.

37But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they beheld a spirit.

38And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and wherefore do questionings arise in your heart?

39See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye behold me having.

40And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

41And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here anything to eat?

42And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish.

43And he took it, and ate before them.

44And he said unto them, These are my words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me.

45Then opened he their mind, that they might understand the scriptures;

46and he said unto them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead the third day;

47and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name unto all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

48Ye are witnesses of these things.

49And behold, I send forth the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city, until ye be clothed with power from on high.

50And he led them out until [they were] over against Bethany: and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.

51And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven.

52And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:

53and were continually in the temple, blessing God.

1Now on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the aromatic spices they had prepared.

2They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb,

3but when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

4While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood beside them in dazzling attire.

5The women were terribly frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?

6He is not here, but has been raised! Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,

7that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.”

8Then the women remembered his words,

9and when they returned from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.

10Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles.

11But these words seemed like pure nonsense to them, and they did not believe them.

12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He bent down and saw only the strips of linen cloth; then he went home, wondering what had happened.

13Now that very day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.

14They were talking to each other about all the things that had happened.

15While they were talking and debating these things, Jesus himself approached and began to accompany them

16(but their eyes were kept from recognizing him).

17Then he said to them, “What are these matters you are discussing so intently as you walk along?” And they stood still, looking sad.

18Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that have happened there in these days?”

19He said to them, “What things?” “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene,” they replied, “a man who, with his powerful deeds and words, proved to be a prophet before God and all the people;

20and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and crucified him.

21But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. Not only this, but it is now the third day since these things happened.

22Furthermore, some women of our group amazed us. They were at the tomb early this morning,

23and when they did not find his body, they came back and said they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.

24Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him.”

25So he said to them, “You foolish people—how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!

26Wasn’t it necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and enter into his glory?”

27Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things written about himself in all the scriptures.

28So they approached the village where they were going. He acted as though he wanted to go farther,

29but they urged him, “Stay with us because it is getting toward evening and the day is almost done.” So he went in to stay with them.

30When he had taken his place at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.

31At this point their eyes were opened and they recognized him. Then he vanished out of their sight.

32They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us while he was speaking with us on the road, while he was explaining the scriptures to us?”

33So they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. They found the eleven and those with them gathered together

34and saying, “The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon!”

35Then they told what had happened on the road, and how they recognized him when he broke the bread.

36While they were saying these things, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

37But they were startled and terrified, thinking they saw a ghost.

38Then he said to them, “Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?

39Look at my hands and my feet; it’s me! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones like you see I have.”

40When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

41And while they still could not believe it (because of their joy) and were amazed, he said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

42So they gave him a piece of broiled fish,

43and he took it and ate it in front of them.

44Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled.”

45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures,

46and said to them, “Thus it stands written that the Christ would suffer and would rise from the dead on the third day,

47and repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

48You are witnesses of these things.

49And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. But stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

50Then Jesus led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them.

51Now during the blessing he departed and was taken up into heaven.

52So they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

53and were continually in the temple courts blessing God.

1But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they and some others came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared.

2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

3They entered in, and didn’t find the Lord Jesus’ body.

4While they were greatly perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling clothing.

5Becoming terrified, they bowed their faces down to the earth. They said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?

6He isn’t here, but is risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee,

8They remembered his words,

11These words seemed to them to be nonsense, and they didn’t believe them.

12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. Stooping and looking in, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he departed to his home, wondering what had happened.

13Behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia from Jerusalem.

14They talked with each other about all of these things which had happened.

15While they talked and questioned together, Jesus himself came near, and went with them.

16But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

17He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk, and are sad?”

31Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished out of their sight.

32They said to one another, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us, while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?”

33They rose up that very hour, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,

34saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”

35They related the things that happened along the way, and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

36As they said these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be to you.”

37But they were terrified and filled with fear, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

38He said to them, “Why are you troubled? Why do doubts arise in your hearts?

39See my hands and my feet, that it is truly me. Touch me and see, for a spirit doesn’t have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”

40When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

41While they still didn’t believe for joy, and wondered, he said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

53and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.

Summary

Women find the empty tomb, Jesus appears to two disciples on the Emmaus road opening the Scriptures, reveals Himself to the eleven, commissions them as witnesses, and ascends into heaven — "beginning from Jerusalem."

Authorship & Background

Author: Luke (see Chapter 1 notes for full authorship details).
Historical Context: Chapter 24 is the final chapter of Luke's Gospel — recording the resurrection, the Emmaus road encounter, Jesus' appearance to the disciples, and the ascension. Luke's resurrection account emphasizes the physical reality of the risen Christ (He eats fish, shows His wounds) and the opening of the disciples' understanding of Scripture.
The Emmaus Road (vv.13-35): Unique to Luke and one of the most beautiful narratives in the Gospels. Two disciples walking away from Jerusalem in despair are joined by the risen Jesus — whom they don't recognize. He walks with them, opens the Scriptures to them, and is finally recognized "in the breaking of bread" (v.35). Then He vanishes. Their response: "Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way?"
The Physical Resurrection (vv.36-43): Jesus appears to the gathered disciples, shows them His hands and feet, and eats broiled fish. This is not a ghost or a vision — it is a physical, bodily resurrection. Luke emphasizes this against any spiritualizing of the resurrection.
The Great Commission in Luke (vv.46-49): "Repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things." The mission: preach repentance and forgiveness to all nations. The power: "endued with power from on high" (the Holy Spirit, fulfilled at Pentecost).

Map & Geography

  • The tomb (vv.1-12): The rock-hewn tomb near Golgotha in Jerusalem where the women found the stone rolled away.
  • The road to Emmaus (v.13): A village about 7 miles from Jerusalem. Two disciples walked this road on resurrection afternoon when Jesus appeared to them.
  • Jerusalem (v.33): The disciples returned from Emmaus to Jerusalem where Jesus appeared to the gathered eleven.
  • Bethany (v.50): Jesus led them out to Bethany on the Mount of Olives, where He ascended into heaven.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik examines the empty tomb, the Emmaus road encounter, the physical resurrection appearances, and the ascension.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Emmaus Road" on vv.13-35 (MTP Vol. 10, No. 584) "Did not our heart burn within us? That is what happens when Christ opens the Scriptures — hearts burn. Not just minds informed but hearts ignited. If your Bible reading leaves you cold, ask Christ to walk with you through it. Ask Him to open it. When He does, you will burn." Sermon: "He Is Risen" on v.6 (MTP Vol. 22, No. 1318) "Why seek ye the living among the dead? Stop looking for Jesus in the tomb. Stop looking for Him in dead religion, dead ritual, dead tradition. He is risen. He is alive. And He walks with you on the road — even when you don't recognize Him."

Reflection

  • 1. "Why seek ye the living among the dead?" (v.5). Are you looking for Jesus in dead places — dead religion, dead habits, dead traditions? He is alive and present. Where do you need to redirect your search?
  • 2. The Emmaus disciples were walking away from Jerusalem in despair — and Jesus joined them on the road (v.15). He meets you in your disappointment, your confusion, your walking away. He doesn't wait for you to come back; He comes to you. Where is He walking with you right now that you haven't recognized?
  • 3. "Did not our heart burn within us, while he opened to us the scriptures?" (v.32). When did your heart last burn while reading the Bible? If it's been a while, ask Christ to open the Scriptures to you again. Ask for burning.
  • 4. Jesus "opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures" (v.45). You cannot understand the Bible fully without the Spirit's help. Do you pray before you read? Do you ask God to open your understanding?
  • 5. The women came to the tomb expecting a dead body (v.1). They found an empty tomb and a living Lord. What expectations about God do you need to let go of? Where is He doing something you didn't expect?
  • 6. Jesus walked with the Emmaus disciples for hours before they recognized Him (v.16). Sometimes Christ is present in our lives and we don't see Him. What might be preventing you from recognizing His presence right now?
  • 7. "Beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself" (v.27). The entire Old Testament points to Jesus. How does reading the OT with Christ as the center change how you understand it?
  • 8. Jesus ate fish to prove He was physically risen (vv.42-43). The resurrection is not a metaphor — it is a physical, historical event. How does the bodily resurrection of Christ affect your hope for your own future resurrection?
  • 9. "Ye are witnesses of these things" (v.48). You are a witness — not just a believer but a testifier. What have you witnessed of Christ's work in your life? Who needs to hear your testimony?
