Matthew — Chapter 14

1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
2And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
3For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife.
4For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
5And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
6But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
7Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
8And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger.
9And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.
10And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
11And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.
12And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
13When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
14And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
15And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
16But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
17And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
18He said, Bring them hither to me.
19And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
20And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
21And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
22And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
24But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
25And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
29And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
33Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
34And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
35And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;
36And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
1At that season Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus,
2and said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore do these powers work in him.
3For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip`s wife.
4For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
5And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
6But when Herod`s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod.
7Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she should ask.
8And she, being put forward by her mother, saith, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
9And the king was grieved; but for the sake of his oaths, and of them that sat at meat with him, he commanded it to be given;
10and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.
11And his head was brought on a platter, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.
12And his disciples came, and took up the corpse, and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.
13Now when Jesus heard [it], he withdrew from thence in a boat, to a desert place apart: and when the multitudes heard [thereof,] they followed him on foot from the cities.
14And he came forth, and saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick.
15And when even was come, the disciples came to him, saying, The place is desert, and the time is already past; send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food.
16But Jesus said unto them, They have no need to go away; give ye them to eat.
17And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
18And he said, Bring them hither to me.
19And he commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.
20And they all ate, and were filled: and they took up that which remained over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full.
21And they that did eat were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22And straightway he constrained the disciples to enter into the boat, and to go before him unto the other side, till he should send the multitudes away.
23And after he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray: and when even was come, he was there alone.
24But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves; for the wind was contrary.
25And in the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the sea.
26And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a ghost; and they cried out for fear.
27But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto the upon the waters.
29And he said, Come. And Peter went down from the boat, and walked upon the waters to come to Jesus.
30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.
31And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and saith unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32And when they were gone up into the boat, the wind ceased.
33And they that were in the boat worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
34And when they had crossed over, they came to the land, unto Gennesaret.
35And when the men of that place knew him, they sent into all that region round about, and brought unto him all that were sick,
36and they besought him that they might only touch the border of his garment: and as many as touched were made whole.
1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard reports about Jesus,
2and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead! And because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him.”
3For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
4because John had repeatedly told him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
5Although Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd because they accepted John as a prophet.
6But on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod,
7so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
8Instructed by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.”
9Although it grieved the king because of his oath and the dinner guests, he commanded it to be given.
10So he sent and had John beheaded in the prison.
11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
12Then John’s disciples came and took the body and buried it and went and told Jesus.
13Now when Jesus heard this he went away from there privately in a boat to an isolated place. But when the crowd heard about it, they followed him on foot from the towns.
14As he got out he saw the large crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15When evening arrived, his disciples came to him saying, “This is an isolated place and the hour is already late. Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”
16But he replied, “They don’t need to go. You give them something to eat.”
17They said to him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”
18“Bring them here to me,” he replied.
19Then he instructed the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to heaven he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.
20They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, 12 baskets full.
21Not counting women and children, there were about 5,000 men who ate.
22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dispersed the crowds.
23And after he sent the crowds away, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.
24Meanwhile the boat, already far from land, was taking a beating from the waves because the wind was against it.
25As the night was ending, Jesus came to them walking on the sea.
26When the disciples saw him walking on the water they were terrified and said, “It’s a ghost!” and cried out with fear.
27But immediately Jesus spoke to them: “Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”
28Peter said to him, “Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water.”
29So he said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.
30But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
32When they went up into the boat, the wind ceased.
33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
34After they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.
35When the people there recognized him, they sent word into all the surrounding area, and they brought all their sick to him.
36They begged him if they could only touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
1At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus,
2and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him.”
3For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.
4For John said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
5When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
6But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced among them and pleased Herod.
7Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask.
8She, being prompted by her mother, said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer.”
9The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths, and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given,
10and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.
11His head was brought on a platter, and given to the young lady: and she brought it to her mother.
12His disciples came, and took the body, and buried it; and they went and told Jesus.
13Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat, to a deserted place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities.
14Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

16But Jesus said to them, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17They told him, “We only have here five loaves and two fish.”
18He said, “Bring them here to me.”
19He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave to the multitudes.
20They all ate, and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces.
21Those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.
24But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
25In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.
26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!” and they cried out for fear.
27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”
28Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.”
29He said, “Come!” Peter stepped down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus.
30But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
32When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.
33Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!”
34When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.
35When the people of that place recognized him, they sent into all that surrounding region, and brought to him all who were sick;
36and they begged him that they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.
Summary
Herod executes John the Baptist, Jesus feeds five thousand with five loaves and two fish, and then walks on the sea to His terrified disciples — with Peter briefly joining Him on the water before sinking in doubt.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Machaerus: The fortress east of the Dead Sea (in Perea) where Herod imprisoned and beheaded John the Baptist.
- A desert place (v.13): A remote area on the northeast shore of the Sea of Galilee near Bethsaida, where the feeding of the 5,000 occurred.

Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik examines Herod's guilty conscience, the feeding miracle's structure, Peter's walk on water, and the significance of "It is I" (ego eimi).
- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "Peter's Walk on the Water" on vv.28-31 (MTP Vol. 17, No. 1005) "Peter walked on the water — and then he sank. But notice: he sank while looking at the wind. He walked while looking at Jesus. That is the whole Christian life in one picture. Eyes on Christ — you walk. Eyes on circumstances — you sink. And when you sink, He catches you." Sermon: "Five Loaves and Two Fishes" on vv.15-21 (MTP Vol. 37, No. 2208) "Bring them hither to Me. That is all. Bring what you have — however small, however insufficient — bring it to Jesus. He does not ask you to have enough. He asks you to bring what you have."
Reflection
- 1. Herod killed John because of a rash oath and peer pressure (v.9). He was "sorry" but did it anyway. How often do you make decisions you regret because of what others will think? Where is peer pressure overriding your conscience?
- 2. Jesus said "Give ye them to eat" (v.16). He involves us in His work — even when we feel inadequate. What has God asked you to do that feels impossible? What do you have in your hands right now that He might want to multiply?
- 3. Peter walked on water when he looked at Jesus and sank when he looked at the wind (vv.29-30). What are you looking at right now — Jesus or your circumstances? What would it take to fix your eyes back on Him?
- 4. When Peter sank, he cried "Lord, save me" — and Jesus immediately caught him (v.31). The shortest, most desperate prayer in Scripture — and it was answered instantly. When you're sinking, do you cry out to Jesus or try to save yourself?
- 5. After hearing of John's death, Jesus withdrew to a solitary place (v.13). Even Jesus needed time to grieve. How do you process grief and loss? Do you give yourself permission to grieve, or do you push through without stopping?
- 6. The disciples said "Send the multitude away" (v.15) — Jesus said "Give ye them to eat" (v.16). The disciples saw a problem to dismiss; Jesus saw people to feed. When you see need around you, is your instinct to avoid it or to engage it?
- 7. Peter got out of the boat — the other eleven didn't. He failed, but he also walked on water. Would you rather stay safe in the boat or risk failure by stepping out in faith? What boat is God calling you out of?
- 8. "O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?" (v.31). Jesus didn't say "no faith" — He said "little faith." Even little faith gets rescued. How does knowing that Jesus works with imperfect, small faith encourage you to step out?
- 9. After the storm, the disciples worshipped and said "Of a truth thou art the Son of God" (v.33). Storms often produce deeper worship and clearer understanding of who Jesus is. What has a recent storm in your life revealed to you about Christ?
