Matthew — Chapter 24

1And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.

2And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

3And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

4And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

5For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

6And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

8All these are the beginning of sorrows.

9Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.

10And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

11And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

12And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

13But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

14And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

15When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

16Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

17Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

18Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

19And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

20But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

21For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

22And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.

23Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

24For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

25Behold, I have told you before.

26Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

27For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

28For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

29Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

30And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

31And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

32Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

33So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

34Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

35Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

36But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

37But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

38For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

39And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

40Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

41Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

42Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

43But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

44Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

45Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?

46Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

47Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.

48But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;

49And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;

50The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

51And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

1And Jesus went out from the temple, and was going on his way; and his disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple.

2But he answered and said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

3And as he sat on the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what [shall be] the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

4And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man lead you astray.

5For many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall lead many astray.

6And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled: for [these things] must needs come to pass; but the end is not yet.

7For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be famines and earthquakes in divers places.

8But all these things are the beginning of travail.

9Then shall they deliver you up unto tribulation, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all the nations for my name`s sake.

10And then shall many stumble, and shall deliver up one another, and shall hate one another.

11And many false prophets shall arise, and shall lead many astray.

12And because iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of the many shall wax cold.

13But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.

14And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a testimony unto all the nations; and then shall the end come.

15When therefore ye see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let him that readeth understand),

16then let them that are in Judaea flee unto the mountains:

17let him that is on the housetop not go down to take out things that are in his house:

18and let him that is in the field not return back to take his cloak.

19But woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days!

20And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on a sabbath:

21for then shall be great tribulation, such as hath not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever shall be.

22And except those days had been shortened, no flesh would have been saved: but for the elect`s sake those days shall be shortened.

23Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is the Christ, or, Here; believe [it] not.

24For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

25Behold, I have told you beforehand.

26If therefore they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the wilderness; go not forth: Behold, he is in the inner chambers; believe [it] not.

27For as the lightning cometh forth from the east, and is seen even unto the west; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.

28Wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

29But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

30and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

31And he shall send forth his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

32Now from the fig tree learn her parable: when her branch is now become tender, and putteth forth its leaves, ye know that the summer is nigh;

33even so ye also, when ye see all these things, know ye that he is nigh, [even] at the doors.

34Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all these things be accomplished.

35Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

36But of that day and hour knoweth no one, not even the angels of heaven, neither the Son, but the Father only.

37And as [were] the days of Noah, so shall be the coming of the Son of man.

38For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,

39and they knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.

40Then shall two man be in the field; one is taken, and one is left:

41two women [shall be] grinding at the mill; one is taken, and one is left.

42Watch therefore: for ye know not on what day your Lord cometh.

43But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken through.

44Therefore be ye also ready; for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

45Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath set over his household, to give them their food in due season?

46Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

47Verily I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath.

48But if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord tarrieth;

49and shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and shall eat and drink with the drunken;

50the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not,

51and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

1Now as Jesus was going out of the temple courts and walking away, his disciples came to show him the temple buildings.

2And he said to them, “Do you see all these things? I tell you the truth, not one stone will be left on another. All will be torn down!”

3As he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, his disciples came to him privately and said, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

4Jesus answered them, “Watch out that no one misleads you.

5For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will mislead many.

6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. Make sure that you are not alarmed, for this must happen, but the end is still to come.

7For nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

8All these things are the beginning of birth pains.

9“Then they will hand you over to be persecuted and will kill you. You will be hated by all the nations because of my name.

10Then many will be led into sin, and they will betray one another and hate one another.

11And many false prophets will appear and deceive many,

12and because lawlessness will increase so much, the love of many will grow cold.

13But the person who endures to the end will be saved.

14And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole inhabited earth as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

15“So when you see the abomination of desolation—spoken about by Daniel the prophet—standing in the holy place” (let the reader understand),

16“then those in Judea must flee to the mountains.

17The one on the roof must not come down to take anything out of his house,

18and the one in the field must not turn back to get his cloak.

19Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days!

20Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath.

21For then there will be great suffering unlike anything that has happened from the beginning of the world until now, or ever will happen.

22And if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.

23Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe him.

24For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

25Remember, I have told you ahead of time.

26So then, if someone says to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out, or ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe him.

27For just like the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so the coming of the Son of Man will be.

28Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

29“Immediately after the suffering of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will be shaken.

30Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man arriving on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

31And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet blast, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

32“Learn this parable from the fig tree: Whenever its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near.

33So also you, when you see all these things, know that he is near, right at the door.

34I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.

35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

36“But as for that day and hour no one knows it—not even the angels in heaven—except the Father alone.

37For just like the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be.

38For in those days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark.

39And they knew nothing until the flood came and took them all away. It will be the same at the coming of the Son of Man.

40Then there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one left.

41There will be two women grinding grain with a mill; one will be taken and one left.

42“Therefore stay alert because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.

43But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have been alert and would not have let his house be broken into.

44Therefore you also must be ready because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

45“Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom the master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their food at the proper time?

46Blessed is that slave whom the master finds at work when he comes.

47I tell you the truth, the master will put him in charge of all his possessions.

48But if that evil slave should say to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’

49and he begins to beat his fellow slaves and to eat and drink with drunkards,

50then the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not foresee,

51and will cut him in two, and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

1Jesus went out from the temple, and was going on his way. His disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple.

2But he answered them, “You see all of these things, don’t you? Most certainly I tell you, there will not be left here one stone on another, that will not be thrown down.”

3As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?”

4Jesus answered them, “Be careful that no one leads you astray.

5For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will lead many astray.

6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you aren’t troubled, for all this must happen, but the end is not yet.

7For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be famines, plagues, and earthquakes in various places.

8But all these things are the beginning of birth pains.

9Then they will deliver you up to oppression, and will kill you. You will be hated by all of the nations for my name’s sake.

10Then many will stumble, and will deliver up one another, and will hate one another.

11Many false prophets will arise, and will lead many astray.

12Because iniquity will be multiplied, the love of many will grow cold.

13But he who endures to the end, the same will be saved.

14This Good News of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world for a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

15“When, therefore, you see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),

16then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

17Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take out the things that are in his house.

18Let him who is in the field not return back to get his clothes.

19But woe to those who are with child and to nursing mothers in those days!

20Pray that your flight will not be in the winter, nor on a Sabbath,

21for then there will be great oppression, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever will be.

22Unless those days had been shortened, no flesh would have been saved. But for the sake of the chosen ones, those days will be shortened.

23“Then if any man tells you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or, ‘There,’ don’t believe it.

24For there will arise false christs, and false prophets, and they will show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones.

25“Behold, I have told you beforehand.

26If therefore they tell you, ‘Behold, he is in the wilderness,’ don’t go out; ‘Behold, he is in the inner rooms,’ don’t believe it.

27For as the lightning flashes from the east, and is seen even to the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

28For wherever the carcass is, that is where the vultures gather together.

29But immediately after the oppression of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken;

30and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.

31He will send out his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.

32“Now from the fig tree learn this parable. When its branch has now become tender, and produces its leaves, you know that the summer is near.

33Even so you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

34Most certainly I tell you, this generation will not pass away, until all these things are accomplished.

35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

36But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

37“As the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

38For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ship,

39and they didn’t know until the flood came, and took them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

40Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and one will be left.

41Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and one will be left.

42Watch therefore, for you don’t know in what hour your Lord comes.

43But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.

44Therefore also be ready, for in an hour that you don’t expect, the Son of Man will come.

45“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has set over his household, to give them their food in due season?

46Blessed is that servant whom his lord finds doing so when he comes.

47Most certainly I tell you that he will set him over all that he has.

48But if that evil servant should say in his heart, ‘My lord is delaying his coming,’

49and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with the drunkards,

50the lord of that servant will come in a day when he doesn’t expect it, and in an hour when he doesn’t know it,

51and will cut him in pieces, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites. That is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.

Summary

The Olivet Discourse — Jesus prophesies the destruction of the temple, signs of the end of the age, the great tribulation, and His glorious return, warning His disciples to watch and be ready because "of that day and hour knoweth no man."

Authorship & Background

Author: Matthew (see Chapter 1 notes for full authorship details).
Historical Context: Chapter 24 is the Olivet Discourse — Jesus' longest prophetic teaching, delivered on the Mount of Olives overlooking the Temple. The disciples asked three questions (v.3): (1) When will the Temple be destroyed? (2) What will be the sign of your coming? (3) What will be the sign of the end of the age? Jesus answers all three, weaving together near-future events (the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70) and far-future events (His second coming).
The Temple's Destruction: Jesus predicted that "not one stone" would be left upon another (v.2). This was fulfilled literally in AD 70 when Roman general Titus destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple. The Romans even pried apart the stones to recover gold that had melted between them during the fire.
Interpretive Approaches: This chapter is interpreted differently across traditions: (1) Preterist — most was fulfilled in AD 70; (2) Futurist — most awaits future fulfillment; (3) Historicist — fulfilled progressively through church history; (4) Idealist — principles applicable to every generation. The study notes present the text without forcing one system.
The Key Command: "Watch" (vv.42-44). Regardless of interpretive framework, Jesus' practical application is clear: be ready, be faithful, be watchful. No one knows the day or hour — so live every day as if it could be today.

Map & Geography

  • The Mount of Olives (v.3): Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives, directly overlooking the Temple, when the disciples asked about the end times. The Temple was visible across the Kidron Valley.
  • Jerusalem and the Temple (vv.1-2): Jesus prophesied the destruction of the Temple (fulfilled in AD 70 by the Romans under Titus).
  • "All the world" (v.14): The global scope of the Gospel's reach before the end.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik examines the three questions, the signs of the end, the abomination of desolation, the near/far fulfillment pattern, and the practical application of watchfulness.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Second Coming" on vv.30-31 (MTP Vol. 37, No. 2214) "He shall come — not as a babe in a manger, not as a man of sorrows — but in glory, with angels, with a trumpet, with power. Every eye shall see Him. And the question is not 'when?' but 'are you ready?'" Sermon: "Watching for Christ" on v.42 (MTP Vol. 22, No. 1294) "Watch — for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. Not 'figure out the date.' Not 'decode the prophecies.' Watch. Be ready. Live as if He could come today. That is the only appropriate posture."

Reflection

  • 1. "Take heed that no man deceive you" (v.4) — Jesus' first warning about the end times is about deception, not persecution. False teachers and false Christs are the primary danger. How do you guard yourself against spiritual deception? What is your standard for evaluating teaching?
  • 2. "Because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold" (v.12). When sin increases around you, it's easy to become cynical, hard, or indifferent. Is your love growing cold? What would it take to keep your love burning in a world of increasing darkness?
  • 3. "He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved" (v.13). Endurance — not a one-time decision but a lifetime of faithfulness. What does endurance look like in your specific circumstances right now?
  • 4. "Be ye also ready" (v.44). If Jesus returned today, would He find you faithful? Would He find you doing what He assigned you to do? What would you change about today if you knew He was coming tomorrow?
  • 5. The disciples were impressed by the Temple's grandeur (v.1). Jesus said it would all be destroyed. What impressive things in your life — career, possessions, institutions — are you putting too much confidence in? What is truly permanent?
  • 6. Jesus said "see that ye be not troubled" (v.6) — even when hearing about wars, famines, and earthquakes. How do you maintain peace in a world of constant bad news? What is the source of your stability?
  • 7. "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world" (v.14). The mission must be completed. What is your role in the global spread of the Gospel? Are you actively participating, or passively waiting?
  • 8. "Of that day and hour knoweth no man" (v.36). Anyone who claims to know when Jesus will return is wrong — Jesus said so. How does the unknowability of the timing affect how you live? Does it create urgency or complacency?
  • 9. The faithful servant is found "so doing" when the master returns (v.46). Not waiting, not speculating, not debating — doing. What has God assigned you to do? Are you doing it faithfully right now?
