Matthew — Chapter 15

1Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,
2Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
3But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
4For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
5But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
6And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
7Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
8This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
10And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
11Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
12Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?
13But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
14Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
15Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.
16And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
17Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
18But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
19For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
20These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
21Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
22And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
23But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
24But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
25Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
26But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.
27And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.
28Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
29And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.
30And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them:
31Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
32Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.
33And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?
34And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
35And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.
36And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
37And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.
38And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.
39And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala,
1Then there come to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying,
2Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
3And he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?
4For God said, Honor thy father and thy mother: and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death.
5But ye say, whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is given [to God];
6he shall not honor his father. And ye have made void the word of God because of your tradition.
7Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,
8This people honoreth me with their lips; But their heart is far from me.
9But in vain do they worship me, Teaching [as their] doctrines the precepts of men.
10And he called to him the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
11Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man.
12Then came the disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying?
13But he answered and said, Every plant which my heavenly Father planted not, shall be rooted up.
14Let them alone: they are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both shall fall into a pit.
15And Peter answered and said unto him, Declare unto us the parable.
16And he said, Are ye also even yet without understanding?
17Perceive ye not, that whatsoever goeth into the mouth passeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
18But the things which proceed out of the mouth come forth out of the heart; and they defile the man.
19For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, railings:
20these are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not the man.
21And Jesus went out thence, and withdrew into the parts of Tyre and Sidon.
22And behold, a Canaanitish woman came out from those borders, and cried, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a demon.
23But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
24But he answered and said, I was not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
25But she came and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
26And he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children`s bread and cast it to the dogs.
27But she said, Yea, Lord: for even the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters` table.
28Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it done unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was healed from that hour.
29And Jesus departed thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and he went up into the mountain, and sat there.
30And there came unto him great multitudes, having with them the lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and they cast them down at this feet; and he healed them:
31insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb speaking, the maimed whole, and lame walking, and the blind seeing: and they glorified the God of Israel.
32And Jesus called unto him his disciples, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days and have nothing to eat: and I would not send them away fasting, lest haply they faint on the way.
33And the disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so many loaves in a desert place as to fill so great a multitude?
34And Jesus said unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few small fishes.
35And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground;
36and he took the seven loaves and the fishes; and he gave thanks and brake, and gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.
37And they all ate, and were filled: and they took up that which remained over of the broken pieces, seven baskets full.
38And they that did eat were four thousand men, besides women and children.
39And he sent away the multitudes, and entered into the boat, and came into the borders of Magadan.
1Then Pharisees and experts in the law came from Jerusalem to Jesus and said,
2“Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat.”
3He answered them, “And why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?
4For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.’
5But you say, ‘If someone tells his father or mother, “Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God,”
6he does not need to honor his father.’ You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition.
7Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said,
8“‘This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me,
9and they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”
10Then he called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand.
11What defiles a person is not what goes into the mouth; it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles a person.”
12Then the disciples came to him and said, “Do you know that when the Pharisees heard this saying they were offended?”
13And he replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.
14Leave them! They are blind guides. If someone who is blind leads another who is blind, both will fall into a pit.”
15But Peter said to him, “Explain this parable to us.”
16Jesus said, “Even after all this, are you still so foolish?
17Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer?
18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person.
19For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.
20These are the things that defile a person; it is not eating with unwashed hands that defiles a person.”
21After going out from there, Jesus went to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
22A Canaanite woman from that area came and cried out, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is horribly demon-possessed!”
23But he did not answer her a word. Then his disciples came and begged him, “Send her away because she keeps on crying out after us.”
24So he answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
25But she came and bowed down before him and said, “Lord, help me!”
26“It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs,” he said.
27“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”
28Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, your faith is great! Let what you want be done for you.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.
29When he left there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up a mountain, where he sat down.
30Then large crowds came to him bringing with them the lame, blind, crippled, mute, and many others. They laid them at his feet, and he healed them.
31As a result, the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they praised the God of Israel.
32Then Jesus called his disciples and said, “I have compassion on the crowd because they have already been here with me three days and they have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry since they may faint on the way.”
33The disciples said to him, “Where can we get enough bread in this desolate place to satisfy so great a crowd?”
34Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They replied, “Seven—and a few small fish.”
35After instructing the crowd to sit down on the ground,
36he took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks, he broke them and began giving them to the disciples, who then gave them to the crowds.
37They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full.
38Not counting children and women, there were 4,000 men who ate.
39After sending away the crowd, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
1Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying,
2“Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat bread.”
3He answered them, “Why do you also disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?
4For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’
5But you say, ‘Whoever may tell his father or his mother, “Whatever help you might otherwise have gotten from me is a gift devoted to God,”
6he shall not honor his father or mother.’ You have made the commandment of God void because of your tradition.
7You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,
8‘These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9And in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrine rules made by men.’”
10He summoned the multitude, and said to them, “Hear, and understand.
11That which enters into the mouth doesn’t defile the man; but that which proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.”
12Then the disciples came, and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying?”
13But he answered, “Every plant which my heavenly Father didn’t plant will be uprooted.
14Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
15Peter answered him, “Explain the parable to us.”
16So Jesus said, “Do you also still not understand?
17Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly, and then out of the body?
18But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the man.
19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.
20These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn’t defile the man.”
21Jesus went out from there, and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon.
22Behold, a Canaanite woman came out from those borders, and cried, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, you son of David! My daughter is severely possessed by a demon!”
23But he answered her not a word. His disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away; for she cries after us.”
24But he answered, “I wasn’t sent to anyone but the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
25But she came and worshiped him, saying, “Lord, help me.”
26But he answered, “It is not appropriate to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
27But she said, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”
28Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Be it done to you even as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.
29Jesus departed from there, and came near to the sea of Galilee; and he went up into the mountain, and sat there.
30Great multitudes came to him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others, and they put them down at his feet. He healed them,
31so that the multitude wondered when they saw the mute speaking, the injured healed, the lame walking, and the blind seeing—and they glorified the God of Israel.
32Jesus summoned his disciples and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days and have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away fasting, or they might faint on the way.”
33The disciples said to him, “Where should we get so many loaves in a deserted place as to satisfy so great a multitude?”
34Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”
35He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground;
36and he took the seven loaves and the fish. He gave thanks and broke them, and gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.
37They all ate, and were filled. They took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over.
38Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.
39Then he sent away the multitudes, got into the boat, and came into the borders of Magdala.
Summary
Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for elevating human tradition over God's commandments, honors a Canaanite woman's persistent faith by healing her daughter, and feeds four thousand in another miraculous provision.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Tyre and Sidon (v.21): Phoenician coastal cities (modern Lebanon), about 35-50 miles northwest of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus traveled into Gentile territory — a significant geographic move.
- Sea of Galilee / mountain (v.29): Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and went up on a mountain, where He healed multitudes and fed 4,000.
- Magadan/Magdala (v.39): A town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus sailed after the feeding.
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik examines the corban loophole, the revolutionary nature of Jesus' teaching on defilement, the Canaanite woman's faith, and the differences between the feeding of the 4,000 and the 5,000.
- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Heart's Overflow" on vv.18-19 (MTP Vol. 22, No. 1290) "Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts. Not out of circumstances, not out of bad company, not out of poverty or ignorance — out of the heart. The heart is the factory of sin. Until the heart is changed, the life cannot be changed." Sermon: "Great Faith" on v.28 (MTP Vol. 10, No. 553) "She would not be denied. Silence did not stop her. Apparent rejection did not stop her. She took the very words that seemed to exclude her and turned them into an argument for inclusion. That is great faith — faith that will not let go."
Reflection
- 1. Jesus exposed how religious tradition can actually contradict God's commands (vv.3-6). Are there religious habits or traditions in your life that you follow without examining whether they align with Scripture? What would it look like to evaluate your practices against God's actual Word?
- 2. "Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts" (v.19). Jesus lists the sins that flow from the heart — and every man recognizes himself in that list. Which of these is your greatest struggle? What are you doing to address the heart issue, not just the behavior?
- 3. The Canaanite woman was met with silence, apparent rejection, and a seemingly insulting comparison — and she persisted. Her faith was not deterred by difficulty. How persistent is your prayer life? Do you give up when God seems silent, or do you press in?
- 4. Jesus commended "great faith" in two Gentiles — people outside the religious establishment. Sometimes the people with the deepest faith are those with the least religious background. How does that challenge your assumptions about who has real faith?
- 5. The Pharisees honored God with their lips but their hearts were far from Him (v.8). Honest check: is your worship genuine or performative? Is there a gap between what you say about God and how you actually live?
- 6. Jesus said defilement comes from within, not from external sources (v.11). We often blame our environment for our sin — "If my circumstances were different, I wouldn't struggle with this." How does Jesus' teaching challenge that excuse?
- 7. The Canaanite woman called Jesus "Lord" and "Son of David" — she had more theological clarity than many in Israel. Where did her faith come from? What does her example teach you about faith that persists through apparent rejection?
- 8. The disciples had already seen Jesus feed 5,000 (ch.14) and still asked "Where would we get enough bread?" (v.33). How quickly we forget God's past faithfulness. What has God done for you in the past that you need to remember right now?
- 9. Jesus had compassion on the crowd because they had been with Him three days without food (v.32). He noticed their physical need. How attentive are you to the practical needs of people around you — not just their spiritual needs?
