Deuteronomy — Chapter 13

1If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
2And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
3Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
4Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
5And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.
6If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
7Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;
8Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him:
9But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
10And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
11And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.
12If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the LORD thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying,
13Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;
14Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you;
15Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.
16And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, for the LORD thy God: and it shall be an heap for ever; it shall not be built again.
17And there shall cleave nought of the cursed thing to thine hand: that the LORD may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and shew thee mercy, and have compassion upon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers;
18When thou shalt hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD thy God.
1If there arise in the midst of thee a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and he give thee a sign or a wonder,
2and the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
3thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or unto that dreamer of dreams: for Jehovah your God proveth you, to know whether ye love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
4Ye shall walk after Jehovah your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
5And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death, because he hath spoken rebellion against Jehovah your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of bondage, to draw thee aside out of the way which Jehovah thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.
6If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, that is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
7of the gods of the peoples that are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;
8thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him:
9but thou shalt surely kill him; thy hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
10And thou shalt stone him to death with stones, because he hath sought to draw thee away from Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
11And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do not more any such wickedness as this is in the midst of thee.
12If thou shalt hear tell concerning one of thy cities, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee to dwell there, saying,
13Certain base fellows are gone out from the midst of thee, and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;
14then shalt thou inquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in the midst of thee,
15thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.
16And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, unto Jehovah thy God: and it shall be a heap for ever; it shall not be built again.
17And there shall cleave nought of the devoted thing to thy hand; that Jehovah may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and show thee mercy, and have compassion upon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers;
18when thou shalt hearken to the voice of Jehovah thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah thy God.
1Suppose a prophet or one who foretells by dreams should appear among you and show you a sign or wonder,
2and the sign or wonder should come to pass concerning what he said to you, namely, “Let us follow other gods”—gods whom you have not previously known—“and let us serve them.”
3You must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer, for the Lord your God will be testing you to see if you love him with all your mind and being.
4You must follow the Lord your God and revere only him; and you must observe his commandments, obey him, serve him, and remain loyal to him.
5As for that prophet or dreamer, he must be executed because he encouraged rebellion against the Lord your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, redeeming you from that place of slavery, and because he has tried to entice you from the way the Lord your God has commanded you to go. In this way you must purge evil from among you.
6Suppose your own full brother, your son, your daughter, your beloved wife, or your closest friend should seduce you secretly and encourage you to go and serve other gods that neither you nor your ancestors have previously known,
7the gods of the surrounding people (whether near you or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other).
8You must not give in to him or even listen to him; do not feel sympathy for him or spare him or cover up for him.
9Instead, you must kill him without fail! Your own hand must be the first to strike him, and then the hands of the whole community.
10You must stone him to death because he tried to entice you away from the Lord your God, who delivered you from the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.
11Thus all Israel will hear and be afraid; no longer will they continue to do evil like this among you.
12Suppose you should hear in one of your cities, which the Lord your God is giving you as a place to live, that
13some evil people have departed from among you to entice the inhabitants of their cities, saying, “Let’s go and serve other gods” (whom you have not known before).
14You must investigate thoroughly and inquire carefully. If it is indeed true that such a disgraceful thing is being done among you,
15you must by all means slaughter the inhabitants of that city with the sword; annihilate with the sword everyone in it, as well as the livestock.
16You must gather all of its plunder into the middle of the plaza and burn the city and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. It will be an abandoned ruin forever—it must never be rebuilt again.
17You must not take for yourself anything that has been placed under judgment. Then the Lord will relent from his intense anger, show you compassion, have mercy on you, and multiply you as he promised your ancestors.
18Thus you must obey the Lord your God, keeping all his commandments that I am giving you today and doing what is right before him.
1If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you, and he gives you a sign or a wonder,
2and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, “Let us go after other gods” (which you have not known) “and let us serve them”;
3you shall not listen to the words of that prophet, or to that dreamer of dreams; for Yahweh your God is testing you, to know whether you love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
4You shall walk after Yahweh your God, fear him, keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and you shall serve him, and cling to him.
5That prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death, because he has spoken rebellion against Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to draw you aside out of the way which Yahweh your God commanded you to walk in. So you shall remove the evil from among you.
6If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son, or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend, who is as your own soul, entices you secretly, saying, “Let us go and serve other gods,” which you have not known, you, nor your fathers;
7of the gods of the peoples who are around you, near to you, or far off from you, from the one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth;
8you shall not consent to him, nor listen to him; neither shall your eye pity him, neither shall you spare, neither shall you conceal him;
9but you shall surely kill him. Your hand shall be first on him to put him to death, and afterwards the hands of all the people.
10You shall stone him to death with stones, because he has sought to draw you away from Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
11All Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall not do any more wickedness like this among you.
12If you shall hear about one of your cities, which Yahweh your God gives you to dwell there, that
13certain wicked fellows have gone out from among you, and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying, “Let us go and serve other gods,” which you have not known;
14then you shall inquire, and make search, and ask diligently. Behold, if it is true, and the thing certain, that such abomination was done among you,
15you shall surely strike the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, with all that is therein and its livestock, with the edge of the sword.
16You shall gather all its plunder into the middle of its street, and shall burn with fire the city, and all of its plunder, to Yahweh your God. It shall be a heap forever. It shall not be built again.
17Nothing of the devoted thing shall cling to your hand, that Yahweh may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and show you mercy, and have compassion on you, and multiply you, as he has sworn to your fathers;
18when you listen to Yahweh your God’s voice, to keep all his commandments which I command you today, to do that which is right in Yahweh your God’s eyes.
Summary
God warns against false prophets, family members, or cities that entice Israel to worship other gods — such seduction must be dealt with severely.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Moses speaks from the plains of Moab. False prophets might arise "in your midst" (v.1) — anywhere in the land. Idolatrous cities must be destroyed entirely (vv.12-16).
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes that the test of a prophet is not his power but his message. A miracle-worker who leads away from God is a false prophet regardless of his signs. He notes that God actively uses false prophets as a test of His people's loyalty — this is not God tempting to evil (James 1:13) but God testing to reveal what is in the heart.
- Charles Spurgeon: "The test of a prophet is not 'Does he work wonders?' but 'Does he lead to God?' Satan can produce signs. Demons can work miracles. The question is never the power of the messenger but the direction of the message. Does it lead you closer to the God of Scripture, or away from Him? If away — though the sign be never so great — reject it utterly."
Reflection
- 1. Signs do not validate a message (vv.1-3). A prophet's power proves nothing about his truthfulness. The test is always: does the message align with God's revealed word? In an age of spectacular ministries, this principle is essential. Miracles without sound doctrine are demonic deception, not divine confirmation.
- 2. God tests loyalty through permitted deception (v.3). God allows false prophets to arise as a test. This is sobering: God is actively interested in whether we love Him supremely. He does not shield us from every deception — He expects us to discern by His word.
- 3. No relationship supersedes loyalty to God (vv.6-11). Brother, child, spouse, closest friend — if they lead away from God, covenant loyalty demands rejection. Jesus echoes this: "He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me" (Matthew 10:37). God demands first place — absolutely.
- 4. Due process even in urgent cases (v.14). Before destroying an idolatrous city: "enquire, and make search, and ask diligently." God demands justice even when the crime is severe. Zeal without investigation is not righteousness but mob violence.
- 5. Tolerated sin brings corporate judgment (v.17). Achan's sin brought defeat on all Israel (Joshua 7). An idolatrous city left standing brings God's anger on the whole nation. Sin tolerated in the community is sin shared by the community.
- 6. The six verbs of devotion (v.4): walk, fear, keep, obey, serve, cleave. This is the antidote to deception — active, comprehensive devotion to God. Those who are passively religious are easily led astray. Those who actively pursue God recognize counterfeits.
