Deuteronomy — Chapter 8

1All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.
2And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
3And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
4Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.
5Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.
6Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.
7For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;
8A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;
9A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.
10When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.
11Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:
12Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;
13And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;
14Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;
15Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;
16Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;
17And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.
18But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.
19And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.
20As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.
1All the commandment which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which Jehovah sware unto your fathers.
2And thou shalt remember all the way which Jehovah thy God hath led thee these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble thee, to prove thee, to know what was in thy heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or not.
3And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by everything that proceedeth out of the mouth of Jehovah doth man live.
4Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.
5And thou shalt consider in thy heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so Jehovah thy God chasteneth thee.
6And thou shalt keep the commandments of Jehovah thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.
7For Jehovah thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills;
8a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey;
9a land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack anything in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig copper.
10And thou shalt eat and be full, and thou shalt bless Jehovah thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.
11Beware lest thou forget Jehovah thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his ordinances, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:
12lest, when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;
13and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;
14then thy heart be lifted up, and thou forget Jehovah thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;
15who led thee through the great and terrible wilderness, [wherein were] fiery serpents and scorpions, and thirsty ground where was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;
16who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not; that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end:
17and [lest] thou say in thy heart, My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth.
18But thou shalt remember Jehovah thy God, for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as at this day.
19And it shall be, if thou shalt forget Jehovah thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.
20As the nations that Jehovah maketh to perish before you, so shall ye perish; because ye would not hearken unto the voice of Jehovah your God.
1You must keep carefully all these commandments I am giving you today so that you may live, increase in number, and go in and occupy the land that the Lord promised to your ancestors.
2Remember the whole way by which he has brought you these 40 years through the wilderness so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not.
3So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna. He did this to teach you that humankind cannot live by bread alone, but also by everything that comes from the Lord’s mouth.
4Your clothing did not wear out nor did your feet swell all these 40 years.
5Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his child, so the Lord your God disciplines you.
6So you must keep his commandments, live according to his standards, and revere him.
7For the Lord your God is bringing you to a good land, a land of brooks, springs, and fountains flowing forth in valleys and hills,
8a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, of olive trees and honey,
9a land where you may eat food in plenty and find no lack of anything, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you can mine copper.
10You will eat your fill and then praise the Lord your God because of the good land he has given you.
11Be sure you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today.
12When you eat your fill, when you build and occupy good houses,
13when your cattle and flocks increase, when you have plenty of silver and gold, and when you have abundance of everything,
14be sure you do not feel self-important and forget the Lord your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery,
15and who brought you through the great, fearful wilderness of venomous serpents and scorpions, an arid place with no water. He made water flow from a flint rock and
16fed you in the wilderness with manna (which your ancestors had never before known) so that he might by humbling you test you and eventually bring good to you.
17Be careful not to say, “My own ability and skill have gotten me this wealth.”
18You must remember the Lord your God, for he is the one who gives ability to get wealth; if you do this he will confirm his covenant that he made by oath to your ancestors, even as he has to this day.
19Now if you forget the Lord your God at all and follow other gods, worshiping and prostrating yourselves before them, I testify to you today that you will surely be annihilated.
20Just like the nations the Lord is about to destroy from your sight, so he will do to you because you would not obey him.
1You shall observe to do all the commandments which I command you today, that you may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers.
2You shall remember all the way which Yahweh your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, to prove you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments, or not.
3He humbled you, and allowed you to be hungry, and fed you with manna, which you didn’t know, neither did your fathers know; that he might teach you that man does not live by bread only, but man lives by every word that proceeds out of Yahweh’s mouth.
4Your clothing didn’t grow old on you, neither did your foot swell, these forty years.
5You shall consider in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so Yahweh your God disciplines you.
6You shall keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.
7For Yahweh your God brings you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of springs, and underground water flowing into valleys and hills;
8a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig trees and pomegranates; a land of olive trees and honey;
9a land in which you shall eat bread without scarceness, you shall not lack anything in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you may dig copper.
10You shall eat and be full, and you shall bless Yahweh your God for the good land which he has given you.
11Beware lest you forget Yahweh your God, in not keeping his commandments, and his ordinances, and his statutes, which I command you today;
12lest, when you have eaten and are full, and have built fine houses, and lived in them;
13and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied;
14then your heart might be lifted up, and you forget Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;
15who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with venomous snakes and scorpions, and thirsty ground where there was no water; who poured water for you out of the rock of flint;
16who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers didn’t know; that he might humble you, and that he might prove you, to do you good at your latter end:
17and lest you say in your heart, “My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth.”
18But you shall remember Yahweh your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as it is today.
19It shall be, if you shall forget Yahweh your God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you today that you shall surely perish.
20As the nations that Yahweh makes to perish before you, so you shall perish; because you wouldn’t listen to Yahweh your God’s voice.
Summary
Moses warns Israel not to forget God when they prosper in the land — remember it is He who gives the power to get wealth.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Moses speaks from the plains of Moab. He recalls the "great and terrible wilderness" (v.15) — the route where God sustained them with manna and water from flint rock.
- "A land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths" (v.7): The Promised Land described in contrast to the barren wilderness.
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes that the wilderness was God's school — designed to teach dependence. He notes that verse 3 is not anti-material but pro-word: physical bread sustains the body, but God's word sustains the whole person. He highlights the progression in vv.12-17 as the anatomy of spiritual decline: prosperity → comfort → pride → forgetfulness → self-credit → idolatry.
- Charles Spurgeon: "'Man doth not live by bread only.' The body lives by bread, but the man — the whole man, the soul — lives by every word from God's mouth. You may feed the body and starve the soul. You may be rich in this world's goods and bankrupt in heaven's currency. The manna taught Israel that their true sustenance came not from the ground but from God's mouth. Every morning, fresh from heaven — that is how God's word must come to us."
Reflection
- 1. "Man doth not live by bread only" (v.3). Physical provision is not enough for human flourishing. You need God's word as surely as you need food. Are you feeding your soul as faithfully as you feed your body?
- 2. "To humble thee, and to prove thee" (v.2). Your wilderness seasons have purpose. God uses hardship to break self-sufficiency and reveal what is truly in your heart. The test is not for God's information — it is for yours.
- 3. "As a man chasteneth his son" (v.5). God's discipline is fatherly, not punitive. A father who never disciplines does not love (Hebrews 12:8). If God is correcting you, it is because you are His child, not because He has abandoned you.
- 4. "Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget" (v.14). The anatomy of spiritual decline: abundance → pride → forgetfulness → self-credit → idolatry. Prosperity is more spiritually dangerous than poverty. Guard your heart in seasons of plenty.
- 5. "My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth" (v.17). The self-made man is a myth. Every ability, every opportunity, every breath is God's gift. The moment you take credit for what God has given, you have begun to forget Him.
- 6. "It is he that giveth thee power to get wealth" (v.18). Even your capacity to work, to think, to create, to earn — all of it comes from God. Wealth is not evil, but it is never self-generated. Acknowledge the Source.
