1And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan,
2And all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the utmost sea,
3And the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar.
4And the LORD said unto him, This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed: I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.
5So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.
6And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.
7And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.
8And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.
9And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.
10And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,
11In all the signs and the wonders, which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land,
12And in all that mighty hand, and in all the great terror which Moses shewed in the sight of all Israel.
1And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And Jehovah showed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan,
2and all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the hinder sea,
3and the South, and the Plain of the valley of Jericho the city of palm-trees, unto Zoar.
4And Jehovah said unto him, This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed: I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.
5So Moses the servant of Jehovah died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of Jehovah.
6And he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab over against Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.
7And Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.
8And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of weeping in the mourning for Moses were ended.
9And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as Jehovah commanded Moses.
10And there hath not arisen a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom Jehovah knew face to face,
11in all the signs and the wonders, which Jehovah sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land,
12and in all the mighty hand, and in all the great terror, which Moses wrought in the sight of all Israel.
1Then Moses ascended from the rift valley plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the summit of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. The Lord showed him the whole land—Gilead to Dan,
2and all of Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the distant sea,
3the Negev, and the plain of the Valley of Jericho, the city of date palm trees, as far as Zoar.
4Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it, but you will not cross over there.”
5So Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab as the Lord had said.
6He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab near Beth Peor, but no one knows his exact burial place to this very day.
7Moses was 120 years old when he died, but his eye was not dull nor had his vitality departed.
8The Israelites mourned for Moses in the rift valley plains of Moab for thirty days; then the days of mourning for Moses ended.
9Now Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had placed his hands on him; and the Israelites listened to him and did just what the Lord had commanded Moses.
10No prophet ever again arose in Israel like Moses, who knew the Lord face to face.
11He did all the signs and wonders the Lord had sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, all his servants, and the whole land,
12and he displayed great power and awesome might in view of all Israel.
1Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. Yahweh showed him all the land of Gilead, to Dan,
2and all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, to the western sea,
3and the south, and the Plain of the valley of Jericho the city of palm trees, to Zoar.
4Yahweh said to him, “This is the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’ I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.”
5So Moses the servant of Yahweh died there in the land of Moab, according to Yahweh’s word.
6He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth Peor, but no man knows where his tomb is to this day.
7Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died. His eye was not dim, nor his strength gone.
8The children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the days of weeping in the mourning for Moses were ended.
9Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands on him. The children of Israel listened to him, and did as Yahweh commanded Moses.
10Since then, there has not arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom Yahweh knew face to face,
11in all the signs and the wonders, which Yahweh sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land,
12and in all the mighty hand, and in all the awesome deeds, which Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
Summary
Moses views the Promised Land from Mount Nebo, dies at 120 with undiminished strength, and is buried by God — no prophet like him arose in Israel.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Mount Nebo / Pisgah (v.1): Moses ascends from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, opposite Jericho.
- The panoramic view (vv.1-3): God shows Moses all the land — Gilead to Dan (north), Naphtali, Ephraim, Manasseh, Judah to the "utmost sea" (Mediterranean), the Negev, the plain of Jericho ("the city of palm trees") to Zoar.
- "The valley in the land of Moab" (v.6): Moses is buried here — "no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day."
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes the typological significance: Moses (the law) brings Israel to the border but cannot bring them in. Joshua (whose name = Jesus) brings them into the inheritance. The law reveals the promise; grace fulfills it. He also notes the tenderness of God burying His servant personally.
- Charles Spurgeon: "'His eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.' Moses did not die because his candle burned out — God blew it out. He was not worn down by age but called home by God. What a way to die! Not fading into weakness but stepping from full strength into glory. And God buried him — what an undertaker! The Almighty Himself laid His servant to rest in a grave that no man could find or defile."
Reflection
- 1. Faithfulness does not exempt from consequences (v.4). Moses was the most faithful man in Israel — yet he could not enter the land because of one act of disobedience at Meribah. God's grace forgives; God's government still imposes consequences. This is sobering for leaders especially: greater privilege means greater accountability.
- 2. God's tenderness in judgment (vv.1,4). God could have simply let Moses die without seeing the land. Instead, He personally shows him the entire panorama. There is grace even in discipline. God's "no" is accompanied by kindness — He lets Moses see what he cannot enter.
- 3. God buries His servant (v.6). The Creator of the universe personally buries Moses. What honor! What intimacy! God cares for His servants in death as in life. The unknown grave prevents idolatry — God protects Moses' legacy from corruption even after death.
- 4. Undiminished to the end (v.7). Moses did not fade — he was called home at full strength. God can sustain His servants with supernatural vitality for as long as He has work for them. Death for the believer is not decay but divine summons.
- 5. The law brings to the border; grace brings in. Moses (law) brings Israel to the edge of Canaan but cannot bring them in. Joshua (grace/ Jesus) brings them into their inheritance. The law shows us the promise but cannot deliver it. Only Jesus — the true Joshua — brings us into the fullness of God's promises. This is the great typological lesson of Deuteronomy's ending.
- 6. "There arose not a prophet like Moses" (v.10) — until Christ. Moses was unique: face-to-face with God, mighty in signs, mediator of the covenant. But Deuteronomy 18:15 promises One greater. Hebrews 3:1-6 makes the comparison: Moses was faithful as a servant; Christ is faithful as a Son. The Pentateuch ends looking forward to the One who will surpass Moses — the Prophet, Priest, and King who brings God's people fully into their inheritance.
