1And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.

2And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them.

3Yea, he loved the people; all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words.

4Moses commanded us a law, even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob.

5And he was king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together.

6Let Reuben live, and not die; and let not his men be few.

7And this is the blessing of Judah: and he said, Hear, LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him unto his people: let his hands be sufficient for him; and be thou an help to him from his enemies.

8And of Levi he said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah;

9Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children: for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant.

10They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thine altar.

11Bless, LORD, his substance, and accept the work of his hands: smite through the loins of them that rise against him, and of them that hate him, that they rise not again.

12And of Benjamin he said, The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him; and the LORD shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.

13And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the LORD be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath,

14And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and for the precious things put forth by the moon,

15And for the chief things of the ancient mountains, and for the precious things of the lasting hills,

16And for the precious things of the earth and fulness thereof, and for the good will of him that dwelt in the bush: let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the top of the head of him that was separated from his brethren.

17His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.

18And of Zebulun he said, Rejoice, Zebulun, in thy going out; and, Issachar, in thy tents.

19They shall call the people unto the mountain; there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall suck of the abundance of the seas, and of treasures hid in the sand.

20And of Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head.

21And he provided the first part for himself, because there, in a portion of the lawgiver, was he seated; and he came with the heads of the people, he executed the justice of the LORD, and his judgments with Israel.

22And of Dan he said, Dan is a lion’s whelp: he shall leap from Bashan.

23And of Naphtali he said, O Naphtali, satisfied with favour, and full with the blessing of the LORD: possess thou the west and the south.

24And of Asher he said, Let Asher be blessed with children; let him be acceptable to his brethren, and let him dip his foot in oil.

25Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be.

26There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky.

27The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

28Israel then shall dwell in safety alone: the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of corn and wine; also his heavens shall drop down dew.

29Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places.

1And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.

2And he said, Jehovah came from Sinai, And rose from Seir unto them; He shined forth from mount Paran, And he came from the ten thousands of holy ones: At his right hand was a fiery law for them.

3Yea, he loveth the people; All his saints are in thy hand: And they sat down at thy feet; [Every one] shall receive of thy words.

4Moses commanded us a law, An inheritance for the assembly of Jacob.

5And he was king in Jeshurun, When the heads of the people were gathered, All the tribes of Israel together.

6Let Reuben live, and not die; Nor let his men be few.

7And this is [the blessing] of Judah: and he said, Hear, Jehovah, the voice of Judah, And bring him in unto his people. With his hands he contended for himself; And thou shalt be a help against his adversaries.

8And of Levi he said, Thy Thummim and thy Urim are with thy godly one, Whom thou didst prove at Massah, With whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah;

9Who said of his father, and of his mother, I have not seen him; Neither did he acknowledge his brethren, Nor knew he his own children: For they have observed thy word, And keep thy covenant.

10They shall teach Jacob thine ordinances, And Israel thy law: They shall put incense before thee, And whole burnt-offering upon thine altar.

11Bless, Jehovah, his substance, And accept the work of his hands: Smite through the loins of them that rise up against him, And of them that hate him, that they rise not again.

12Of Benjamin he said, The beloved of Jehovah shall dwell in safety by him; He covereth him all the day long, And he dwelleth between his shoulders.

13And of Joseph he said, Blessed of Jehovah be his land, For the precious things of heaven, for the dew, And for the deep that coucheth beneath,

14And for the precious things of the fruits of the sun, And for the precious things of the growth of the moons,

15And for the chief things of the ancient mountains, And for the precious things of the everlasting hills,

16And for the precious things of the earth and the fulness thereof, And the good will of him that dwelt in the bush. Let [the blessing] come upon the head of Joseph, And upon the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.

17The firstling of his herd, majesty is his; And his horns are the horns of the wild-ox: With them he shall push the peoples all of them, [even] the ends of the earth: And they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, And they are the thousands of Manasseh.

18And of Zebulun he said, Rejoice, Zebulun, in thy going out; And, Issachar, in thy tents.

19They shall call the peoples unto the mountain; There shall they offer sacrifices of righteousness: For they shall suck the abundance of the seas, And the hidden treasures of the sand.

20And of Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: He dwelleth as a lioness, And teareth the arm, yea, the crown of the head.

21And he provided the first part for himself, For there was the lawgiver`s portion reserved; And he came [with] the heads of the people; He executed the righteousness of Jehovah, And his ordinances with Israel.

22And of Dan he said, Dan is a lion`s whelp, That leapeth forth from Bashan.

23And of Naphtali he said, O Naphtali, satisfied with favor, And full with the blessing of Jehovah, Possess thou the west and the south.

24And of Asher he said, Blessed be Asher with children; Let him be acceptable unto his brethren, And let him dip his foot in oil.

25Thy bars shall be iron and brass; And as thy days, so shall thy strength be.

26There is none like unto God, O Jeshurun, Who rideth upon the heavens for thy help, And in his excellency on the skies.

27The eternal God is [thy] dwelling-place, And underneath are the everlasting arms. And he thrust out the enemy from before thee, And said, Destroy.

28And Israel dwelleth in safety, The fountain of Jacob alone, In a land of grain and new wine; Yea, his heavens drop down dew.

29Happy art thou, O Israel: Who is like unto thee, a people saved by Jehovah, The shield of thy help, And the sword of thy excellency! And thine enemies shall submit themselves unto thee; And thou shalt tread upon their high places.

1This is the blessing Moses the man of God pronounced upon the Israelites before his death.

2He said: “The Lord came from Sinai and revealed himself to Israel from Seir. He appeared in splendor from Mount Paran, and came forth with ten thousand holy ones. With his right hand he gave a fiery law to them.

3Surely he loves the people; all your holy ones are in your power. And they sit at your feet, each receiving your words.

4Moses delivered to us a law, an inheritance for the assembly of Jacob.

5The Lord was king over Jeshurun, when the leaders of the people assembled, the tribes of Israel together.

6“May Reuben live and not die, and may his people multiply.”

7And this is the blessing to Judah. He said, “Listen, O Lord, to Judah’s voice, and bring him to his people. May his power be great, and may you help him against his foes.”

8Of Levi he said: “Your Thummim and Urim belong to your godly one, whose authority you challenged at Massah, and with whom you argued at the waters of Meribah.

9He said to his father and mother, ‘I have not seen him,’ and he did not acknowledge his own brothers or know his own children, for they kept your word, and guarded your covenant.

10They will teach Jacob your ordinances and Israel your law; they will offer incense as a pleasant odor, and a whole offering on your altar.

11Bless, O Lord, his goods, and be pleased with his efforts; undercut the legs of any who attack him, and of those who hate him, so that they cannot stand.”

12Of Benjamin he said: “The beloved of the Lord will live safely by him; he protects him all the time, and the Lord places him on his chest.”

13Of Joseph he said: “May the Lord bless his land with the harvest produced by the sky, by the dew, and by the depths crouching beneath;

14with the harvest produced by the daylight and by the moonlight;

15with the best of the ancient mountains and the harvest produced by the age-old hills;

16with the harvest of the earth and its fullness and the pleasure of him who resided in the burning bush. May blessing rest on Joseph’s head, and on the top of the head of the one set apart from his brothers.

17May the firstborn of his bull bring him honor, and may his horns be those of a wild ox; with them may he gore all peoples, all the far reaches of the earth. They are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.”

18Of Zebulun he said: “Rejoice, Zebulun, when you go outside, and Issachar, when you are in your tents.

19They will summon peoples to the mountain, there they will sacrifice proper sacrifices; for they will enjoy the abundance of the seas, and the hidden treasures of the shores.”

20Of Gad he said: “Blessed be the one who enlarges Gad. Like a lioness he will dwell; he will tear at an arm—indeed, a scalp.

21He has selected the best part for himself, for the portion of the ruler is set aside there; he came with the leaders of the people, he obeyed the righteous laws of the Lord and his ordinances with Israel.”

22Of Dan he said: “Dan is a lion’s cub; he will leap forth from Bashan.”

23Of Naphtali he said: “O Naphtali, overflowing with favor, and full of the Lord’s blessing, possess the west and south.”

24Of Asher he said: “Asher is blessed with children; may he be favored by his brothers, and may he dip his foot in olive oil.

25The bars of your gates will be made of iron and bronze, and may you have lifelong strength.”

26“There is no one like God, O Jeshurun, who rides through the sky to help you, on the clouds in majesty.

27The everlasting God is a refuge, and underneath you are his eternal arms; he has driven out enemies before you, and has said, ‘Destroy!’

28Israel lives in safety, the fountain of Jacob is quite secure, in a land of grain and new wine; indeed, its heavens rain down dew.

29You have joy, Israel! Who is like you? You are a people delivered by the Lord, your protective shield and your exalted sword. May your enemies cringe before you; may you trample on their backs.”

1This is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.

2He said, “Yahweh came from Sinai, and rose from Seir to them. He shone from Mount Paran. He came from the ten thousands of holy ones. At his right hand was a fiery law for them.

3Yes, he loves the people. All his saints are in your hand. They sat down at your feet. Each receives your words.

4Moses commanded us a law, an inheritance for the assembly of Jacob.

5He was king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people were gathered, all the tribes of Israel together.

6“Let Reuben live, and not die; Nor let his men be few.”

7This is for Judah. He said, “Hear, Yahweh, the voice of Judah. Bring him in to his people. With his hands he contended for himself. You shall be a help against his adversaries.”

8About Levi he said, “Your Thummim and your Urim are with your godly one, whom you proved at Massah, with whom you contended at the waters of Meribah.

9He said of his father, and of his mother, ‘I have not seen him.’ He didn’t acknowledge his brothers, nor did he know his own children; for they have observed your word, and keep your covenant.

10They shall teach Jacob your ordinances, and Israel your law. They shall put incense before you, and whole burnt offering on your altar.

11Yahweh, bless his skills. Accept the work of his hands. Strike through the hips of those who rise up against him, of those who hate him, that they not rise again.”

12About Benjamin he said, “The beloved of Yahweh will dwell in safety by him. He covers him all day long. He dwells between his shoulders.”

13About Joseph he said, “His land is blessed by Yahweh, for the precious things of the heavens, for the dew, for the deep that couches beneath,

14for the precious things of the fruits of the sun, for the precious things that the moon can yield,

15for the best things of the ancient mountains, for the precious things of the everlasting hills,

16for the precious things of the earth and its fullness, the good will of him who lived in the bush. Let this come on the head of Joseph, on the crown of the head of him who was separated from his brothers.

17The firstborn of his herd, majesty is his. His horns are the horns of the wild ox. With them he will push all the peoples, to the ends of the earth. They are the ten thousands of Ephraim. They are the thousands of Manasseh.”

18About Zebulun he said, “Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out; and Issachar, in your tents.

19They will call the peoples to the mountain. There they will offer sacrifices of righteousness, for they will draw out the abundance of the seas, the hidden treasures of the sand.”

20About Gad he said, “He who enlarges Gad is blessed. He dwells as a lioness, and tears the arm, yes, the crown of the head.

21He provided the first part for himself, for the lawgiver’s portion reserved was reserved for him. He came with the heads of the people. He executed the righteousness of Yahweh, His ordinances with Israel.”

22About Dan he said, “Dan is a lion’s cub that leaps out of Bashan.”

23About Naphtali he said, “Naphtali, satisfied with favor, full of Yahweh’s blessing, Possess the west and the south.”

24About Asher he said, “Asher is blessed with children. Let him be acceptable to his brothers. Let him dip his foot in oil.

25Your bars will be iron and brass. As your days, so your strength will be.

26“There is no one like God, Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens for your help, in his excellency on the skies.

27The eternal God is your dwelling place. Underneath are the everlasting arms. He thrust out the enemy from before you, and said, ‘Destroy!’

28Israel dwells in safety; the fountain of Jacob alone, In a land of grain and new wine. Yes, his heavens drop down dew.

29You are happy, Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by Yahweh, the shield of your help, the sword of your excellency? Your enemies will submit themselves to you. You will tread on their high places.”

Summary

Moses blesses each tribe individually before his death — prophetic words about their future in the Promised Land.

Authorship & Background

Author: Moses. Deuteronomy is the fifth and final book of the Pentateuch, written at the end of the 40 years of wilderness wandering (approximately 1406 BC). Hebrew title: "Devarim" — "Words/Things." Greek title: "Deuteronomion" — "Second Law" (a repetition/expansion of the Law for the new generation). The book consists of Moses' farewell speeches to Israel on the plains of Moab, just before they enter the Promised Land. Moses will not enter with them — these are his final words to the nation he has led for 40 years.
Historical Context: Chapter 33 contains Moses' final blessing on the twelve tribes of Israel — his last words before ascending Nebo to die. This blessing is parallel to Jacob's blessing in Genesis 49, given approximately 400 years earlier. Both are deathbed blessings by a patriarch/leader, both address the tribes individually, but the emphases differ significantly. Jacob's blessing includes sharp rebukes (Reuben, Simeon, Levi); Moses' blessing is almost entirely positive — appropriate for a leader sending his people into battle for the Promised Land. Notable differences: Simeon is omitted entirely (absorbed into Judah's territory), Levi is praised for priestly faithfulness (contrast Genesis 49:5-7 where Levi is rebuked for violence), and Joseph receives the longest and most lavish blessing. The chapter is framed by a magnificent prologue (vv.1-5) describing God's theophanic appearance at Sinai and an epilogue (vv.26-29) celebrating God's incomparable greatness and Israel's unique blessedness. Verse 27 — "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms" — is one of the most beloved verses in the Old Testament. The chapter ends with the triumphant declaration: "Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD" (v.29).
Prologue — God's Theophanic Glory (vv.1-5): "Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death" (v.1). The theophany: "The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them" (v.2). God's love: "Yea, he loved the people; all his saints are in thy hand" (v.3). "Moses commanded us a law, even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob" (v.4). "And he was king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together" (v.5) — God is king over Israel.
Blessings on the Tribes (vv.6-25):
REUBEN (v.6): "Let Reuben live, and not die; and let not his men be few." A modest blessing — survival, not prominence. Reuben's tribe diminished over time (contrast his firstborn status).
JUDAH (v.7): "Hear, LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him unto his people: let his hands be sufficient for him; and be thou an help to him from his enemies." A prayer for Judah's strength and divine assistance in battle. Judah will lead in conquest.
LEVI (vv.8-11): "Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one" (v.8). Levi is praised for covenant faithfulness: "Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children: for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant" (v.9) — reference to the golden calf incident (Exodus 32:26-29) where Levites chose God over family. Their role: "They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thine altar" (v.10). Prayer: "Bless, LORD, his substance, and accept the work of his hands" (v.11).
BENJAMIN (v.12): "The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him; and the LORD shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders." Benjamin's territory will include Jerusalem — dwelling "between his shoulders" (the hills surrounding the temple mount). Safety and divine covering.
JOSEPH (vv.13-17): The longest blessing — lavish abundance. "Blessed of the LORD be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath" (v.13). Precious fruits of sun and moon (v.14), ancient mountains and lasting hills (v.15), the earth's fullness and "the good will of him that dwelt in the bush" (v.16) — a reference to the burning bush (Exodus 3). "His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns" (v.17) — strength and power. "They are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh" (v.17).
ZEBULUN and ISSACHAR (vv.18-19): "Rejoice, Zebulun, in thy going out; and, Issachar, in thy tents" (v.18). Zebulun prospers in commerce (going out); Issachar in domestic life (tents). They will benefit from the sea and "treasures hid in the sand" (v.19).
GAD (vv.20-21): "Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: he dwelleth as a lion" (v.20). Gad chose the first portion of the Transjordan territory. "He executed the justice of the LORD, and his judgments with Israel" (v.21) — Gad kept his promise to fight alongside the other tribes.
DAN (v.22): "Dan is a lion's whelp: he shall leap from Bashan." Strength and agility. Dan's territory was eventually in the north (near Bashan).
NAPHTALI (v.23): "O Naphtali, satisfied with favour, and full with the blessing of the LORD: possess thou the west and the south." Naphtali receives the fertile region around the Sea of Galilee.
ASHER (vv.24-25): "Let Asher be blessed with children; let him be acceptable to his brethren, and let him dip his foot in oil" (v.24) — abundance of olive oil. "Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be" (v.25) — enduring strength throughout life.
Epilogue — The Incomparable God (vv.26-29): "There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky" (v.26). "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them" (v.27). "Israel then shall dwell in safety alone" (v.28). "Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places" (v.29).

Map & Geography

  • Moses blesses the tribes from the plains of Moab before his death. The blessing references God coming from Sinai, Seir (Edom), and Mount Paran (v.2) — the geographic arc of God's revelation.
  • Tribal blessings reference future territories: Joseph's "precious things of the earth" (v.16), Zebulun and Issachar's coastal commerce (v.18-19), Dan leaping from Bashan (v.22).

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik notes the contrast with Genesis 49: Moses blesses where Jacob sometimes rebuked. He emphasizes verse 27 as one of the great comfort texts of Scripture — the everlasting arms beneath every believer in every circumstance. He also highlights the omission of Simeon as historically significant.
  • Charles Spurgeon: "'Underneath are the everlasting arms.' What a pillow for the dying saint! What a support for the living one! You cannot sink lower than the everlasting arms. Beneath your deepest depression, beneath your heaviest trial, beneath your darkest hour — there are arms that never tire, never weaken, never let go. Everlasting arms — they were there before you fell and will be there after the fall is forgotten."

Reflection

  • 1. God loves His people (v.3). Before any blessing is pronounced, the foundation is stated: "He loved the people." Everything flows from God's love — His law, His protection, His provision, His discipline. We are loved before we are blessed.
  • 2. The everlasting arms are beneath us (v.27). Whatever depth we reach — grief, failure, suffering, death — the everlasting arms are already there. We cannot fall beyond God's reach. This is not a promise that we won't fall but that we cannot fall where God is not. Beneath every trial: everlasting arms.
  • 3. Strength proportional to our days (v.25). "As thy days, so shall thy strength be." God does not give tomorrow's strength today. He gives what is needed when it is needed. Daily dependence is the design — sufficient grace for each day's demands (2 Corinthians 12:9).
  • 4. Happiness is grounded in salvation (v.29). "Happy art thou, O Israel... a people saved by the LORD." True happiness is not circumstantial but covenantal. It comes from being saved by God, not from prosperity or ease. The saved are the truly happy — regardless of circumstances.
  • 5. God rides the heavens to help us (v.26). The God who rides the heavens in majesty does so "in thy help." His cosmic power serves our deliverance. The Almighty is not distant — He deploys His infinite resources for the aid of His people.
  • 6. Different gifts, one blessing (vv.6-25). Each tribe receives a different blessing suited to their calling and territory. God does not give everyone the same gift but gives each what they need. Comparison is foolish; contentment with God's specific provision for us is wisdom.
